i LOVE THAT!!!!! if you dont know what youre supposed to be doing and it was already taught, then you make your own arrangements to learn it. the coach shouldnt have to stop practice to reteach someone who isnt responsible.

and if youre going to argue with me... you have to find your own time in school to make up things you missed, teachers dont reteach the whole class. so its the same thing!

I'm going to say as a teacher~~many kids do come back to school and expect me to reteach the lesson to the entire class.
It amazes me what some of these kids and parents expect. (especially if they have been on vacation while we were all still here at school)

I wish my kids were just all on the same commitment level, specifically my level 5's. I have 4 girls on my level 5 team that all drive a little over an hour. They NEVER miss a practice. I mean NEVER. Then I have girls who live 5 minutes down the road who always have an excuse. We've had one girl completely quit her competitive softball team so there we no conflicts, and several others who either quit HS cheer, or told their coaches that Allstar came first no matter what. We have a few kids who have SEVERAL vacations and other trips planned.

The way I coach my teams - If you miss when we make changes (All of our teams are currently going thru big changes as we had about a month of without competitions) I moved kids to the back. I had a kid who was gone 2 weeks on my Senior 2 team for Christmas vacation - Came back, and was sick for a week. She was a "star tumbler" in the routine. She is completely pulled out of all of her tumbling (except standing BHS) and is a front spot and is for the most part in back for anything.

Im kind of the hard butt at my gym about attendance. Kids better have a real good excuse for missing my practices because there are days I give up a lot to come in as well, or come in sick. I will normally call them out the next practice if they have bogus reasons.

I think for some people it is "all about them" and others realize "there are 19 other people counting on me". As parents it is our responsibility to teach our children which values we feel are more important. Not that they always listen or follow suit, but more often than not I think you can see the children behave in a fashion similar to the parents.

I drive my daughter an hour to practice and while there are days she and the other girl she carpools with have lots of homework or other activities, like concerts, they are missing, they talk about how if they don't show up a stunt can't go up or the changes in choregraphy can't be made. I'm proud that they realize that there are other kids making sacrifices as well.

Don't even get me started on those who miss practice (esp.right before a competition) with some ridiculous excuse. Um sorry... doctors appointment at 7:30pm?? And then those who post on facebook where they are (when not at practice). If it weren't so frustrating for the other kids who do show up, it would be almost laughable!

On my team there was this one girl and it was her first year of all stars and only her second year of cheer. She wasn't used to all the hard work we had to do. One day we were all stretching and we noticed she wasn't there. Coach said "Hey I didn't get a call from "C", does anyone know where she is?" One girl answered "Yeah I was driving here and I saw her walking with some of her friends." So coach called her and asked where she was. The girl replied "I'm sick." The whole team was listening to the call on speaker and we could all hear cars driving by and girls laughing. It was SO pathetic.

I had to miss a practice this season because I absolutely couldn't find a ride and our car was broken. I called everyone I knew, even those not on the team because no one on the team lived anywhere near me and the closest was 15 miles in the wrong direction. there's no bus that goes there, and a taxi would have cost 80 dollars because I live so far from cheer. I even tried posting on facebook that I would give someone gas money to drive me. I texted the coach like an hour before practice that I had no way to get there unless he had any idea that I hadn't thought of. He was still mad.

I hate missing practice, when I had surgery, i had to stay overnight so i missed that night's practice (i called to say hey to everyone though), but i had another practice the next day, and went to that practice, everyone was surprised to see me, i said, you really think i would miss practice just because i had surgery? and even when i had knee surgery, i went to practice the day after with a numb leg and still kinda loopy!
In my opinion pink eye is not a reason to miss practice, but yet my sister and I were told to go home, we BEGGED our coach to let us stay, we promised we would sit on the mat, and not touch anyone...and of course they said "go home!" (anyone else think pink eye is an excuse?)
A few years ago someone got strep before nationals, they called in sick, and the coaches said not an excuse and sent my mom to the pharmacy to get masks, and everyone wore masks for the entire practice.

I think pink eye is since its a contagious illness.
I agree. from what i understand its very contagious, and after having it multiple times, I want absolutely nothing to do with anyone with pink eye or be anywhere near them haha

Yeah, I wouldn't want another team member coming to practice with pink eye cause its really contagious. We had two girls this season that had pneumonia and still came to practice and actually practiced. One of them had it for like a month.

I don't understand parents who call the coaches for their children. ESPECIALLY when they are lying. That is teaching their children absolutely nothing. What are these kids going to do when they have college cheer or an actual job, have their mommies call in? Be responsible and fulfill your commitments!!!!
In my experience, people I've cheered with in allstar have always been more sketchy than my school teams, who surprising never miss and always show up early.
Another thought, why would parents pay so much monthly tuition and let their children stay home from practice? Waste!

I am so glad this thread was started because This is my biggest pet peeve ever!! Well, besides athletes not wearing the right practice clothes.. Lol! ( that's a whole different thread) ;) During season, I think there should be no excuses! Throwing up & fever... Ok maybe. Lol! The only reason my daughter has missed a practice was because of high school cheer and honestly, for us ..all-star comes first but since that is her extracurricular at school, its a grade and she loves it, we don't have a choice. But I will say that she was the only freshman that made her school competition team and we turned it down because of all star cheer. To me, missing an all-star practice at her level to do school cheer makes no sense! Period! Luckily our school coach gets it or she wouldn't like me much ;) There are way too many parents allowing their kids to miss practice which consequently causes hard feelings and anger amongst the team, let alone.. Stunts don't go up, pyramids don't get finished and routines aren't ready! Its a TEAM sport people! If youre not committed- go away!!! It drives me crazy! Call me the Nazi cheer mom but I pay way too much money and my daughter has worked way too hard to have kids be on a team that have little or no commitment. Excuses are like a$&&&... There are way too many! Ha ha ha! And did I mention, we drive over an hour & a half one way?? So, I appreciate hearing coaches say that they get tired of it and it's unacceptable.... Cuz this momma gets tired of it! Come to practice! ...And wear the right practice gear... Ha ha ha! Oh - I feel better now! :) Good luck at Nationals everyone!! Happy 2011!!

my sister was in the hospital for pneumonia for like a week, she did not like it.
i remember i flell asleep with my hearing aids in on accident, its a good thing i did though, cuz dad had to wake me up at like 2 am to take my sister to the ER...fun...NOT!

it is, i woke up and 3 hours later my sister started showing signs of having it again, and i got it in both eyes, one eye was red i joked that i had red eye.

i was in the hospital for a week in september, so obviously i missed practice then, even though i begged my mom and the nurses to let me go if i promised to come right back haha
then i had to be out for a week, which was shorter than my doctors wanted, but i still went and watched every practice and game.
my coach has been really nice about me missing practice, becuase i was recently diagnosed with something and i have to go to the doctors freequently and my mom doesnt want me to miss more school than i have.
but on other days wheni dont go to school, i ALWAYS go to practice

i have a related problem, that maybe someone could help me with..i signed up for drivers ed for the week of christmas break, when i knew we didnt have any practice, but it was cancelled for two days because of the snowstorm and for one of the makeup days i would need to leave a 2 hour practice an hour early, or else i cant take the permit test and would have to re-take the class and pay for it again.
I've already put off drivers ed for a year now because of cheer and i really dont know what to do..any advice?

Consult with your coach and decide on a mutually agreeable solution. Coaches can be reasonable ... you just need to communicate HONESTLY.
