Just wondering if any coaches have suggestions on how to bring girls out of their shell?
Our teams are lacking performance skills and we need to bring the sass out in them and I'm hoping you guys have ideas activities or fun things to do at practice to bring out their inner sass without feeling embarrassed.

Its a bit harsh, but sometimes for cardio, after a full out routine, I make the kids do "Full our Performance" routine. If I catch ONE PERSON not performing for even a second, we start over, or if I feel we've started over too many times we condition. I teach my kids to perform during practice, so its usually not an issue. Regardless, most shy kids fake it til they make it, which in turn, turns into real performance.

lol I was one of those who hated making facials at practice! It came naturally on stage. I'd always just smile.

Something that I wish my gym would have done is full out practices w/ hair, makeup and uni for all the teams before every big comp. I always found that if my coaches were confident in warmups, so was I.

I've always been one of those kids who kinda holds in the sass till competition day. Don't get me wrong, I can work a dance. But after a long & tiring practice, I can never find it in me to smile unless my coaches are yelling at me, "YOU BETTER SMILE ALEXA!". But like I said, it's only till comp day. When I'm actually competing, it's a different story. Countless pictures of me with my mouth wide open, looking insane...I think it's all because my coaches drilled it into my head from when I was little that 'stage presence' was a huge category on the score sheets. They also did/do as Rudags says he does, and I honestly find no cruelty in it at all! If the kids know that they can't score high without seeming excited, that should be a good push for them to let out the sass.
And youtube is also a good idea! I would suggest looking up WCSS worlds 2008. Some SERIOUS sass. ;)

the only way i ever feel confident about a routine is if my team has done it over and over at practice. Even though full outs scare me to death i believe thats the only reason i wasnt really nervous about my stunts in the routine. Also lots of Mat talk during the routine helps teams build confidence in one another!

Preparation is definitely key to being confident.
All of the coaches in my gym do everything possible to give our team every advantage. then along the way, i am very encouraging. i try to find something positive in every practice & let the team know they are progressing. then i slowly build them up with confidence - make them feel good about themselves. If they know the coaches believe in them, then they start believing in themselves.

as a coach and a cheerleader, i am very out going, but my sister on the other hand is shy. she is very talented and was placed on a high level team from the start. always having me on her team helped her to come out of her shell, but just making the shy ones feel secure, and their has to be an atmosphere where they want to be able to just one day let loose. ive always just wanted to make people laugh so by being a little silly kinda helps them know that its ok to have fun!
