My mom called me and ask if she should make my sister one for the Summit costs last year and I literally screeched at her. To me, GoFundMe should be for necessities, not NICEities. Nothing wrong with fundraising for cheer, but provide something in exchange instead of just plastering your link everywhere. Sell bows, go work concessions, go wash some cars...do SOMETHING! I'm much more inclined to help those willing to work for it.
Plus people are more likely to give you money if you give them something valuable in return. Duh. I don't understand people.

As for your mom, maybe she doesn't know how they work? I'm not surprised she asked you that question, given all of the stories of people making GoFundMe pages for pageants, trips to Disney, etc.

This is going to sound morbid but bear with me:

The more I see GoFundMe requests for funeral/burial money, the more I feel the need to tell folks to make sure they have life insurance on themselves and their children if they are able to get it.

Let's just say I have more life insurance right now as a 21 year old than my grandma had. I've had the same amount since my parents got it when I was little and we will be upping it shortly once I graduate just in case because of loans. When I was in high school two girls died in a car accident. Ones family either had the money to cover her burial or she had life insurance, the other didn't. Our school ended up fundraising the money so her family could bury her.

Part of me says to tell your mom to do it and if people want to pay for your sister's summit costs, let them.

I can never find the right time to remind people that GO Fund Me should not be your plan for life insurance

Hm I wonder if it's the software update then if it's happening to hers too? I think I updated my software semi recently... Or maybe I need to and that's why. I always keep my screen brightness low.

tbh I updated my laptop a few weeks ago and noticed the same thing. I think that's probably the issue.

my point exactly, like i highly doubt some 18 year old teenager is going to give even any of it to the hospital to begin with....

Okay but I went to gofundme and searched for campaigns in my zip code and look....

It is really hard to get life insurance for your child when they have medical issues

That's why I said "if you are able" in my post. I realize that not everyone CAN get life insurance.

Ex: The last GoFundMe I donated to was for a coworker. She was 9 months pregnant and ended up having a stillbirth two days after her due date.

Obviously there was no insurance for her (not yet born) son. The funeral home was charging them something like $6,000 and no one has that just laying around (yes, they have savings but had just bought a home and had to replace a number of things in it and you just don't think these things are going to happen.)

I don't believe she posted the GoFundMe publicly. I think the link was only sent to close coworkers/family/friends.

Hard but in some instances not impossible

Anyway my post is directed toward the able bodied adults that I have been friends with who have shared gofundme accounts for fellow able bodied adults who died suddenly without a life insurance policy. There comes a point in life where as an adult you need to make sure you have all the insurances....Car. Home. Life. Renters. Health. Etc. if it applies to your life, you need to find a way.

As a working, able bodied adult I do my part (I have 2 life insurance policies) to ensure that when I meet my demise, my family will not have to GoFund my funeral

I'm very harsh, cold and steadfast when it comes to this. Admittedly. I hate buy what you want, beg for what you need people.

actual thing my roommate just said:

"I ordered from (restaurant name)...I've never eaten there before, but they have like Asian food and Thai food. Like Chinese Thai."

She's a college graduate.
