So I just left my old gym, and I've been taking tumbling classes at my new gym the past couple weeks. It's really awesome there, and the coaches are great. I've already gained new skills, too. Pretty much everything there is good, but the only issue is I know nobody. Some girls from my school tumble there (not with me), but they don't do all-star. My best friend from my old gym is considering switching but if she doesn't I'll know no one. Everyone is really close and knows each other, so I'm nervous for tryouts. What are some tips to get to know people?

Just give it some time. Just be kind, smile, and make yourself approachable. You will be fine! :)

Good news, you'll have at least one thing in common with everyone- cheer.

Try asking a group of athletes if you can stretch with them or ask someone else what they like about the gym, their experience, last season etc. You don't have to make friends immediately, that'll take time. I'm sure there will be other new athletes too. Don't stress. You'll be fine.

I totally feel you just this season I moved to a new gym and had to make new friends so I now how daunting it can be.

I would start by making friends with the people in your tumble class because you never know if you'll see them again at tryouts or they may
even end up being on the same team as you.

Once you're placed on a team bonding tends to occur naturally and usually coaches have a "get to know you" day so take full advantage of that.

This is the hardest time of year to make friends. Each individual is trying to make the team of their dreams, and they are likely focusing on what they need to do (I don't mean that negatively, it is just a natural thought process because of so much pressure that is put on tryouts), so I wouldn't worry too much that no one is overly friendly right now. This will likely change once you are placed on a team and start practicing. In the meantime, work hard, say hello to people and try to ask questions if you are waiting in line for tumbling reps - how long have they been at the gym, what team were they on last year, etc. Good luck with your new gym!
