If there's anything people love more than seeing someone at the top fall, it's a comeback. This will blow over soon enough with the next scandal and Lochte will be fine if he wants to keep swimming for 2020

I think the problem is that it's not the crime, it's the cover-up.
Phelps did a stupid thing, then apologized and served his time. Lochte did a stupid thing, then concocted an elaborate lie to explain it away, enlisted his 21-year-old accomplices in the lie, went to the media to further this lie, escaped the country, and has still not fully apologized.

Every second celebrity in America seems to have had a DUI, but Lochte's situation was uniquely bizarre and offensive. I don't think he'll live this down, and I don't think we'll see him in 2020.

i could see him recovering from all of it if his aim is to go for 2020. Lets be honest how many people follow swimming intensely after the olympics..... swimming obviously attracts millions of viewers during the olympics, but i doubt they have millions of viewers in the four years between.
I think if he were to lie low the next year or two, do some PR apologizing, etc. He could easily come back, but time will tell, sponsors are slowly pulling out but they almost always come back. I think his future depends more on what kind of punishment the USOC hands out.

There's a bit of a difference between smoking pot and basically causing an international incident.
Smoking pot + two DUIs and stint in rehab. And now he's once again the media/America's darling. (Not comparing, just throwing it all out there)

I don't think people are excusing Lochte, they are just saying the opportunity will be there for him to come back if he can. He will serve his suspension, which he deserves, and lay low for a while. A few years down the line if he's still swimming, a smaller brand will probably take a gamble on him just for the idea of having him in their gear. If he swims the times to make Trials, he'll be there with a shot at 2020. And if he does make it, NBC can (and will) milk the "Return of Lochte/The New Ryan Lochte" segments for all they can get.

It all remains to be seen. Who knows if he'll even swim the times he needs to, it's a long way away. And he's not getting any younger lol.

I know most of you are going to hate me for this statement, but I thought it was Lochte's Mom that blew this incident up... Lochte lied to his Mom about his shenanigans and she reported it, which forced an investigation... Wow, Lochte destroyed his life because he told 1 lie to his Momma...

PS: I believe Lochte be back, those sponsors are pulling him for a short time and after 2 or 3 months the public will focus on something else...

I agree. I think the mom is what caused it to blow up. I'd be more scared of the wrath of my mom than all of Rio PD, frankly.

A 32-year-old probably shouldn't be lying to his mommy like a kindergartener trying to explain a stain on the carpet...

I read the same thing. He texted her, she freaked out and told a reporter who happened to be nearby, and then it spiraled out of control. Lesson learned. Don't lie to your momma!

I remembers when it first came out and mom said it then the news denied it.

last swimmer to release statement. basically all of them have blamed lochte for destruction of a poster. But i still believe authorities took advantage of them and extorted them. I mean what country charges over 30k to get a passport back....

Jimmy Feigen, last of four Lochte 'robbery' swimmers, releases statement
It's no secret that Brazil is known for extortion. I'm not sure why anyone would expect to be treated like they do in America when they are in a foreign country. When we were in Cozumel we were on mopeds and got pulled over for making an "illegal turn" (it wasn't but good luck arguing with a Mexican police officer). For $200 cash on the spot my husband and his friend got their licenses back and were able to go on their way. We knew when we went there that was a risk - Lochte and company should have known the same thing.

i just dont know if i have that much sympathy for brazil then, i get it people shouldnt come to their country and vandalize things. but according to multiple reports now, the most the swimmers did was pee on a sidewalk and tear down a poster. (the whole destroying a bathroom thing, i find harder to believe since reading other witness accounts)
by the swimmers accounts the "security" wanted money right then and there for damages which apparently they got $200 out of them that night. Then they get arrested and their bail is set at 30k, then apparently according to Feigens story they tried to raise it to over 40k (probably once they released he was a gold medal olympian) eventually they agreed to 10k to release him.
its just shadiness all around from all parties.
im surprised lochte is still sticking to his story after all his team mates went through.
