Finally a huge sporting event on this side of the world again, I can't deal with having to stay awake throughout the night like I did with the 2012 Summer Olympics and 2014 FIFA World Cup.
I know,,, hopefully, I will be there to cheer my niece on... Right now, she is only 11, but she is hoping to represent USA in swimming, so she will only be 16, but hey some of the greats in swimming started this young...

Anyone have good tips for saving money ?? I've been horrible with saving after paying all my bills (car, insurance, phone, cards, gas) :( I'm sick of seeing little to no and or -$ in my account. I always try but then something happens and I end up back in a hole. I know this isn't good and I want to work on building up my finances & credit!

I'll be finishing school this year and will have to start paying off my loans and pay for living expenses as well, So I really need to get my act together!

Any & all helps/tips would be greatly appreciated!

The Wally app is awesome! I really like it and it's simple. I also put my last paycheck each month into savings so I don't count on having that money and I don't spend that money. I only get into my savings if it's something important that I can't afford to pay using my checking. I've been using that app and putting one paycheck a month into savings since January and I've saved a little over $1600, which isn't a lot but considering I had like 32 cents in my savings account before I started I've come a long way [emoji28]

That's so exciting!! I wish her the best of luck, I know how deep the pool (pun intended) of talent is for swimming in the U.S. so she'll have her work cut out for her.

The beauty about being a competitive swimmer (as I was one myself) is that we're allowed a longer career span in comparison to other sports because of how merciful the sport is on our joints and muscles. Very rarely you'll hear swimmers get injured, and even if you do it's after years and years (25 years or more) in the sport specialising on the same stroke (breaststrokers tend to have worn out knees, butterflyers with worn out backs and shoulders etc.). So even if she doesn't make it at 16, she has the opportunity to improve herself well into her 20s.

I suppose Rio isn't bad for me since most of the finals for sporting events occur at night (like swimming and gymnastics) where it's being held, which is basically my mornings between 6:00AM to 10:00AM (6:00PM to 10:00PM EDT). Anything held in continental Europe or Africa is usually the sleep-killer for me.
Speaking of swimming and other water events in Rio, have you heard about the problems athletes already down there training are having?

A shocking AP test found that Rio de Janeiro Olympic waters are equivalent in viral and bacterial levels to raw sewage, putting thousands of athletes at risk.

Going to an Olympic swimming event is on my bucket list. It will happen.

I was actually concerned about this as well when Rio was awarded the bid to host the 2016 Olympics... for events like triathlon, long-distance swimming etc. athletes usually compete in lakes or lagoons and Rio doesn't exactly have the best rating when it comes to sanitary and hygiene standards.

All we can do at this point (less than a year to go) is hope that they can somehow clean-up the water as to reduce the toxicity levels that it's at now. I was hoping they were going to create an artificial lake just for the event, but I guess budget didn't permit for it.

Who do you guys use for student loans? I added my dad as a cosigner to make the interest rate lower and its still 4.5 percent higher with him on there so at this point I literally can't afford to finish school because its so high.
Have u applied thru FAFSA?

Look into Ing/capitol 360. I transfer $50 from my checking every week into it. If I need it I can transfer it back with in days. I don't even miss the $ because it's done automatically

@DancerDude118, thanks and I heard that the USA have a lot of talented swimmers. My niece was actually plunked by a swimming coach, who selected her based on her body type and times... So, let's hope she maintain the interest when she must trained twice a day- 5am and after school until like 7pm in the Winter for the next 5 years...

Yep. I only got around 7k from them. My parents are in the awkward stage of 'We make too much to get help from the government but not enough to help pay for college'
Ahhhh yes, aren't we all.

I lve the olympics! I watch most of the events but mostly the ones where swedes are competing. We do have a few hopes for medals already, most of them im swimming where our supergirl Sarah Sjöström is a big gold hope fr us but also in track and field and handball i think are the swedes best hopes. Swedes are best in winter sports though. unfortunaly unlike you lucky americans for us europeans the games in rio is in the middle of the night.. stupid time difference..

I'm glad Beijing got the 2022 Winter Olympics for the sole purpose of those buildings being used again.

Eta: I really don't like Tokyo's Olympic Games emblem. Like at all.
