Hello! So I was a gymnast for 12 years and decided to be done with the sport and tried out for All Star cheer last year. I joined an all girl team (level 5) that became coed this year. I'm a senior in high school and I don't know much about cheerleading as far as college goes. Can someone help me out? What should I look for? How do tryouts work? etc

Thanks so much

1). Look for a school bases on academics/your desired degree and then cheerleading after
2). Research the teams from the school's you want to attend. Team websites usually have tryout requirements.
3). Reach out to coaches. A lot of coaches will let you come in and watch a practice and many schools have prep-clinics. Make sure to sign up for those/visit practices to get a feel for the team!
4). Gear up for tryouts! Once you've figured out where you're going then take another look at that schools tryout requirements. Make sure to work on all the skills you need to make the team.

Also when looking at teams think about what you want. Do you want a team that competes or one that just does games? If you're looking a competition team what style do you like best--clean and colligate UCA teams (ex Kentucky, Alabama, Morehead State) or flashy more Allstar NCA teams (Louisville, Oklahoma State, Navarro).

What was said above is super important, so definitely follow those steps.
However, it is important to realize that college cheerleaders cheer at games. While it may not seem like a big deal, game days are pretty important, especially to big schools, and it's not just limited to that. There are school events, alumni events, and all sorts of things cheerleaders are expected to attend. And you really only get to compete once a year (typically UCA in January or NCA in April) with maybe a possibility of an exhibition or two.
College cheerleaders are expected to have great game day skills, which means tight motions, loud voices, proper "spiriting," etc. it's not just about being able to through a full and hit a rewind heel stretch double down.
I'm not trying to scare you away, but all the girls I've cheered with who come from a gymnastics to all star background have never enjoyed game days! And it's not an option to not cheer and just compete. I don't want you to make a team and commit then end up not liking it!
Have you looked into Acro and Tumbling? I don't know anyone who has done it personally, but it may be worth a look.

Thanks for your replies! I've looked at Acrobatics and Tumbling but only one of the schools that has it I like and has the major I want. So maybe that one but I also want to look at other options. I know there's different leagues (for lack of a better word). ASU has an All Star Level 6 team so maybe something like that... I just don't know

I also need to see if I have a possibility of any sort of scholarship because going out of state is hard and expensive/: i'll have to see

I dont know of much colleges that offer scholarships. There are some, however, that pays for your books every sem. Or something small like that.

Cheer scholarships are not comparable to other sports at all. Some give you book scholarships, discounted meal plans, or pay for uniforms/clothing. But if you're looking for a deep tuition discount, your best be is still academics.

Honestly if gymnastics is your background and you did allstar cheer for little bit, Acro and Tumbling (in my opinion) is your best option, and you would be very valuable, because the girl who come from gymnastics usually take very good tumbling scores for acro meets!
