looks like next week will focus on reckless.

but how
He seems like a nice kid and all and I don't know his situation but in general what are we really teaching kids as parents and coaches if we just let kids hop on planes to travel across the country just in hopes of globing? You should cheer just because you love to do so, not because of what you can win. I know this is a touchy subject and there are unique circumstances for every situation but when will we honestly acknowledge what we are doing the sport we love. You can't complain about this generation of entitled kids when we are the beast that enables it everyone needs to learn how to not win. Again this isn't intended to be an attack on the young man but his interview kind of rubbed me the wrong way. 12 years ago when he walked into Step 1 he wasn't an elite athlete level 5 athlete but the coaching staff didn't just close their doors to him and shun him they made him into one and then to thank them he walked out. I know the idea of gym loyalty is a divisive topic but I feel like it matters and eventually we will reap what we've sown.
i felt the same exact way! but i was so afraid to say something because it just gets taken the wrong way. kids can go wherever they want, but this is happening more and more to gyms all over the country. it's just a pretty sad statement to me where the direction of all star cheer is headed.

I definitely agree with all who want to see a gym with all homegrown athletes win at Worlds. I think, I cheered so hard for Vizion because they did not have recruited group come so close to winning in 2015... Hopefully, soon we will have an homegrown team win Worlds and others will see it is possible to globe without fllying across the country to be apart of certain teams...

i dont necessarily have a problem with teams having kids that arent originally from the gym try for a level 5 team. But when half your team is made up of kids not originally from your gym, is just odd to me.
i get the show only covers smoed, but they seem to always have a problem with recruiting guys and keeping them for an entire season, i mean does cali coed and black ops have the same issues. Cause i feel like you see the same kids coming back season after season to be apart of coed and Blops..
im surprised smoed over the years has never had a guy from cali coed join at one point in time or another.

it has happened once. ECE medium coed. Hopefully we can have it happen more than once though.

Joey Zielsdorf was originally part of Cali coed. Josh Dowler was part of smoed left for Cali coed and came back to smoed for his last year of cheer.

if someone was at a gym for 12 years and they left for their last year(s) to try something different before that option ran out, no one can question their loyalty or say that they abandoned/shunned their gym or don't know what commitment is. i mean, jeez, what this guy suppose to spill blood for his gym?! gyms nor owners don't own athletes. they can't take full credit for what that athlete did/does/will-do just because they trained that athlete. that athlete who was trained put a lot of hard work and effort in order to do what they do (also, their parents put in a lot of money/work). coaches/gym don't make athletes. athletes , and their parent's money, go to them with their determination and effort and both parties create something together -- talent. "loyalty" can become neurotic, and some coaches and gyms really push that to a toxic level.

i was kind of disappointed, but not surprised because i know crud seeps in every now n then and not everything is perfect, when i saw that a cali coed athlete mentioned on twitter, who was on cali coed for a long time, who went to the east coast to another well known gym, was blocked by her former cali coach on social media shortly after she made the switch to that gym for her last year(s).

while teaching kids of commitment and loyalty, maybe coaches/gyms should be taught that they don't own athletes, even if that athlete walked in as a 5-year-old and its 10+ years later. they don't make athletes. they help cultivate talent.

as a side note, i think that this whole travelling to another gym thing shouldn't be blown out of proportion to the point where people start to believe that this is a popular trend that is happening all over and is something that the majority are doing. making a guess, i'd say that <1% of the cheer population is travelling the country to be on an all star team.

I dont necessarily have an issue with kids flying over the world to be a part of a team. But its concerning when year after year you have to search outside of your own gym to look for kids who have the skills to be on a level 5 team, because you cant find enough lower level athletes to move up.

it happens a lot more than you think.

However that 1% has an extremely strong influence on the other 99% Oe sport especially those younger who idolizes these teams and their athletes.

Also "they don't make athletes. they help cultivate talent" is an oxymoron . . .

I think part of the problem is that cali has a ton of level 5 teams, and they aren't all close to each other. I've known athletes who have progressed wonderfully under the cali staff, so they have the ability to grow talent. But, I see what you mean. They tend to have a reputation of recruiting from all over the US/North America.

they don't make athletes, just like a gardener doesn't make flower seeds nor the flower. there is a lot more going on within that system such as genetics, photosynthesis, etc... just like there is a lot going on within an athlete that the coach didn't make.

if coaches/gyms did in fact make athletes, then why don't they make all athletes into high performing level 5 athletes. if those coaches failed to make others great, and they will have, which would be expected, since not everybody has great athletic abilities, then they cannot say that they're solely responsible for making an athlete. some things are just out of the control of coaches. i wonder if these coaches who say that they make athletes would also own up to the failures of athletes under they're direction. i understand the importance of the athlete and coach relationship, and it's not a one-way street.

THIS! We have to give these athletes a lot of credit too. There are great gyms all across the US and there are great cheerleaders with those gyms. Yes, those athletes grew under the direction of coaches, but growth can't exist without an athlete's own drive, determination and work ethic.
