Question: Do gyms as a whole decide whether or not they will accept Wild Card bids going into a comp or can they decide on a team by team basis?

When we submit our Summit declaration form at Wild Card events, we can choose which teams are eligible for Wild Card Bids

So last night a gym was announced as winning d2 bids and summit bids. The gym said it was a mistake and only declared summit. so I'm sure new d2 bids will go out. But it got me wondering can small gyms compete at d2 Summit and the summit? If it's allowed that's an advantage for small gyms. Wonder if anyone will.

It appears to me that they can decide by team.

D2 Summit - Division Splits at Bid Events
A team can declare at any given competition that they are going for an Summit or D2 Summit bid, but if that team is split into a D2 division at that competition, they must either go for the D2 Summit bid or move into a standard division to compete against teams going for The Summit bid.
Once your team earns a bid for D2 Summit or the Summit, they MUST stay with that specific track to earn a higher bid throughout he reminder of the season.
D2 Summit - Trading of Bids
NEW THIS YEAR- Once your team accepts a bid for Summit or D2 Summit, you MUST stay with that specific track to earn a higher bid throughout the remainder of the season
  • Wild Card D2 Summit Bid- You can ONLY upgrade to a PAID D2 Summit bid.
  • Paid D2 Summit Bid– You must use your Paid D2 Summit bid. This bid type or location cannot be changed.
  • At-Large D2 Summit Bid– You can ONLY upgrade to a PAID D2 Summit bid.
  • Wild Card/ At Large Summit Bids– You can ONLY upgrade to a PAID Summit bid.

Yes, you can have teams compete at both if you are a small gym.

Since they announced the new no passing down of bids rule... will those bids be redistributed or go away? Or is that rule only for *the* Summit and not D2 Summit?

The only advantage I see a small gym having, is if they go up against gym A a lot and they tend to win most competitions and choose to go to D2, it then gives gym B the ability to declare the Summit to avoid competing with gym A for bids. I'm not accusing the gym above of doing this but, as a gym it would be smart at the first competition to divide the teams by D2 and Summit. It would give you a quick snap shot of what direction other gyms are going, and depending on bids earned, which path would be more strategic for you to go down. The down side is bids would be wasted in the process.

I don't see an advantage of going to both since small gyms more than likely have crossovers, staff and parents that would have to be split during the Summit. On top of that, the amount of school missed right before finals and double expense would be a "no" for my family.

For The Summit they "go away" however.... they *can* be redistributed to other events at Varsity's discretion. In my experience, they have used them for when they mess up and give the wrong team a bid but it wasn't fixed until weeks later. Instead of taking that incorrect bid away, they just give out another one.

I'm 99% sure D2 Summit bids do get passed down.

I can't see a small gym go to both D1 and D2 summit. They are the same weekend in different cities. Our old gym wouldn't consider it. One team got a wild card bid to the D1 summit, and after that all teams were only trying for D1 bids.
