What are your thoughts on STUNT? It is USA Cheer's program. They can do anything they want. Would getting rid of makeup and bows make an sport more respected and taken more seriously? I am not a fan of the excessive makeup and wacky hair styles of Allstar cheer but can't there be a happy medium?

I just wanted to know the reasoning behind this. Do skirts and bows limit performance? Do they think they wouldn't be taken seriously if they had more cheer like uniforms? Why can't sports be allowed to be girly?

Would having volleyball player like uniforms allow us to perform better?

Even if all the flashy stuff was done away with, people would still find (what they think are) totally legitimate criticisms for cheer. I mean, look at a lot of the coverage of the USA girl's gymnastics team. Actual news coverage was spent discussing whether or not the athletes should be wearing makeup, and I quote: "Bo Dietl noted, no one wants to see a woman accepting a gold medal looking like a “washed up dishrag.” YA CAN'T WIN!

Link to the article where I found that: NBC And Fox News Very Concerned About The Cosmetic Choices Of Female Olympic Athletes!

Here's an even more extreme example:

Columnist blasted online after piece on 'chestless, man-like' female Olympians - LOCAL

Turkish columnist Yüksel Aytuğ claims the Olympics is "killing womanhood."
About female athletes: “Their appearance is just pathetic.”
"the Olympic Games were destroying the female figure by distorting women's bodies and that points should be added to female Olympians based on how feminine they looked"

So which is worse? Not being taken seriously because you like to wear makeup and sparkly uniforms, or being body shamed and called masculine and pathetic by middle aged men on national news?

I don't know about everyone else....but one of the things I love most about cheer is the glitter. This could be because I love glitter more than most people....and I'm a people person! I just love to the glitter all the way! In soccer or softball growing up if I wore glitter to a game I could be judged. Cheer(granted I have legit never done cheer in my life) it's all about the glitter! So...I vote more rhinestones. ...We were voting on something, right?

Both are equally bad imo. I don't care what they think! I am not going to let people's opinions keep me from doing what I love! I am a cheerleader! You will never see me in a volleyball player like uniform!

I want a middle ground.

Personally I think adding points based on looks is wrong but that doesn't mean athletes should not use cosmetics.

I completely agree with you about wearing whatever you feel comfortable in and not caring what people say or think. And I don't think you sound defensive, but even if you did, who could blame you? We should be angry about stuff like this!!! Cheerleaders are serious athletes, and I have never known another sport that forces athletes to work together as a team as much as competitive cheer does.

Cheerleading is an acrobatic sport and if you look at other acrobatic sports you will find glitter and other over the top uniforms. When I remember my gymnastics days, me and everyone else on my level (and the others as well) were happy for the rhinestones we could get on our leo's. I guess alot of these sports have to do with performing and putting on a show, and most of the time over the top appearences comes along with that. Honestly I love that part of cheer and I wouldn't trade my bow and glitter for a volleyball player uniform.

You keep trying to draw a parallel between NCAA accepted sports and all star cheer.
It's like trying to make fetch happen. There is a difference, NCAA will never buy into what AS is selling. NCATA and STUNT are a completely different world then AS. Most of the kids drawn to A&T want the athletic over flash so they go that direction. If you love AS then go do that but don't get salty because other organizations have decided to go with the athletic look.
