There is a USASF rules discussion
I was just talking to a mom about why have a yth 5 when rarely do they have competition and Jr R5 is pretty much the same thing? A lot of wasted $ to compete against no one!

I dont agree with making youth 6-11.
Im sure there are kids who can do it, but i believe the age gap is too big.
I dont think that a six year old with level 4/5 tumbling is ready to be on say cea butterflies/ WC Twinkles. The pressure on these teams to win is big, and i honestly dont think a six year old can handle that yet (again, there may be exceptions to the rule).
Then there is the difference in interests, most 11 year olds dont do stuff with little ones, they are big girls and will act that way. Im in education and see it during recess, the lil ones are cute for a bit and when the big girls get bored, they dissapear from site leaving the lil ones to play by themselves.
Now this ofcourse wont happen like a carbon copy in a gym, but the bigger girls can get upset/tired of the lil ones playing around/not getting things the first time,
Losing focus etcetc In other words: being a little kid!
Then there are Those Moms aka suzies mom:
How are gyms/coaches supposed to protect little suzie from over achiever mommy dearest who wants her lil baby to have a layout by age 6 so she can be on a level 5 team. And who will put huge amounts of pressure on said lil girl by putting her in loads of privates, classes and making her practice at home as well.
Im for letting 6-8 year olds being awesome on a mini teamand letting her show off the higher tumbling/building skills in solo's or groupstunt competitions.
Let them truely enjoygetting to perform in front of a crowd, and doing the stunts
There will be more than enough time to get to level 5
I respectfully disagree. My child is youth age (she's aging out this year) and has been on youth teams for the last 3 seasons. There are definitely 6-8 year olds that can hang with high level youth teams and I can assure you the kids get along fine. Also realistically the younger kids are typically the flyers - in most cases an 11 yo lifting a 7yo works better than a 10yo (of course that there are always exceptions-this has just been my experience).

I don't think that the XSmall division is a guarantee moving forward. It seems that this will be a sort of an introductory year to see if there is an abundance of participation or lack there of in said division and that will determine, moving forward, if it will remain and then be allowed at worlds. Kind of like when iO4 started. It wasn't really a thing that first year but there was a lot of interest and since then has been added to the list of divisions.
It was funny to see that as this past weekend at JAMfest! CSN I found myself thinking, "what if there was a super small..."
At any rate I think they want to introduce and gauge participation in the division before making it a definite thing so that it doesn't completely demolish another division the way that the introduction of the medium division left the large division a little sparse for a couple years.

Oh, Wow! I thought I read the new Youth age was 8-11 for 2018 season... Wouldn't the 6-11 age grid overlap too much with a Mini?

I would assume they did it this way for the gyms who field a youth because they don't have enough for a mini and a youth team. Had they upped the tiny age it wouldn't have been needed, but that is what I guessed from it. Even with the new ages, for the super small gyms who only have a Youth team and Senior team, no one goes without a team.

Okay, I see....
Now that I am on the sideline peeking in to all cheer
Network...I am glad to see the USASF added the extra small category to the divisions, I think, this will help the small gyms field teams with athletes appropriately placed base on their skills and even age... This can also help small gyms get a foothold in AS cheer and not continue to witness the 'David and Goliath' syndrome perpetuated over and over again...
