I agree with you as far as the tiny age group goes. And yes I'm glad the minimum age for the senior division go up. Even if it is a little. I really wish they would come out with their changes with some explanations. It's like we're all left trying to figure these things out. Maybe eventually we will get to 12 as a minimum age eventually. Who knows?!!!?!

If I had to guess why--by only upping it one year, it allows those ten year olds that are already on a senior team to stay on a senior team next year. If it would have been a two year jump, those kids would be put back on a junior/youth team. In a large program, it probably wouldn't have made much of an impact, but with small gyms, I can definitely understand the need to not split what they already have...

but that's just my opinion and rationale. lol

That actually makes a lot of sense. That way this year's 10 year olds can stay on their team and USASF has the option of upping it to 12 a later year if that is the end goal. Or maybe they will leave it at 11. Who really knows lol

I thought extra small was for a smaller gym to properly farm kids for a level 5 rather than have a disaster that we see at worlds prelims.

This won't change anything at worlds. As long as they're allowing teams who qualify with an 80% we're going to see the same tragedy over and over. Unfortunately there are still coaches who will put their athletes in a division just to say "I have a level 5 team".

Let's discuss!

GIRL. THIS. Thank you. So much.

Especially with the set score. This would stop prelims from looking like a hot mess. There is too much of an obsession with catering to EVERYONE, in part because of a $$$-hungry attitude, and because of a fear of exclusion (moreso the former reason)

And ESPECIALLY with the comparison between cheer and gymnastics. People hate that but clearly they're doing something that we aren't, and it's reflected in the quality of competition. And how do you feel about cheer getting Olympic provisional status, keeping in mind how the sport is going?

I mean if things keep going the way they are we're bound to self destruct. Like you said, they're doing SOMETHING correctly. I mean if you don't want to mimic gymnastics the mimic ice skating, diving, some other successful sport that is judged!

What I find funny is when people scoff at the suggestion that we slow down skill progression in our sport. You know, making sure people's skills are actually solid before letting them move onto the next harder skill. They claim that we'll be too much like gymnastics if we do that.... but then these people want to get the same accolades, for some of the same skills that gymnasts perform, even though we often spend far less time than gymnasts perfecting them. It's nuts. But bring up that point and you're automatically a cheer hater...

I had a whole level progression chart that I think would be great for cheerleaders. Maybe I'll talk about it in a future video. What people don't understand is once you hit a strength level and a skill level, everything else will come so naturally. Progression is key to everything in life, including cheerleading. But so what if we slow down progression, we won't have as many injuries and we would have great solid competition. The lower levels won't be so "cringey" to watch either.

YES! How many tumbling coaches have had a kid come in like "I can't seem to get xyz skill" and then the coach puts them on a conditioning circuit, reworks some basics like the handstand and round-off, and sees dramatic improvements in that kid's tumbling as a result? Improvements that never would have manifested if the kid and his/her coaches had continued with their attempts at putting the toothpaste back into the tube (to borrow a phrase from tumbleyoda)?

Not everyone is going to end up with a full but would it kill us to make sure that everyone has clean basics?

I would LOVE to see that progression chart video.

My child isn't on a world's team and probably never will be. I'm not familiar enough or comfortable enough to include them in my opinions. What I see with level 1-4 is too many teams doing skills above their technical abilities. Many of these teams are consistantly in last place their performances are cringe-worthy. Why aren't gyms placing their teams at a level where they can be successful? If only 2 people are doing layouts in a routine why are you level 4? If your haphazardly erected level 2 stunts are falling to the ground maybe level 1 is a better fit? I find myself concerned for these kids safety. Angry that these parents pay for their kids to travel near & far with a trainwrecked team. Infuriated that the coaches/gym owners care more about status then technique & skill. Why not disqualify teams that accumulate x amout of deductions? Maybe announcing during awards that your level 3 large coed dq'd will get people's attention. Teams that DQ 2 times should not be eligible for Summit/D2 Summit.

This is a really interesting idea.

You seem to have more common sense than most coaches.

This is actually a great idea. If the main reason there are rules is the safety of the athletes then why not "punish" programs who continually put their athletes at risk just because they want to say they have a level X team or because Susie's and Sally's moms threaten to leave if their kids aren't placed on a level X team?

It's easy to follow the safety rules. I think there should be more protocol about teams being in divisions they don't need to be in. For instance having two layouts on level 4 team on a team of 20. Those are the teams that need to be punished. That team could go and have a deduction free routine because they followed all the rules.

Maybe in order to keep the gymnast turned cheerleader from tumbling the whole routine to up the team tumbling score they could limit the number of tumbling passes any one athlete performs
