Does anyone have an insight to share? Our gym is participating for the first time and I can't find any info online. Thanks
There is NEVER info for this event online, its so frustrating.. We are competing in it for the 2nd year. Things I know.. As a program we are prepaying admission. Spirit Sports is only allowing one voucher per program to be submitted for tickets. In other words, we must submit (IN CASH) $25 for every parent and non worlds athletes. The event itself lasted about 2 1/2 hours and ran smoothly. They started with teams that had at large bids to worlds and then paid bids. If I remember correct, they have earmarked prize money to winners with paid bids and separate winnings to the teams with at large bids, but I could be wrong on that. I think we received a schedule for it, but late, like a day or 2 before.

So far 11 teams on the schedule. Several "breaks" listed, so I'm not sure if those are spots reserved for teams who haven't committed/paid yet or if it will stay at 11 teams.

Paid Bid Group:

At Large Group:

I know this isn't the first year of this little shindig... but is it just presumed the at-large teams are not as good as the paid and they therefore automatically compete for the smaller pot? I never really got the logic, especially since the unpaid teams could use more $$

And second thought, are gyms taxed on cash prizes because it's kind of taxable income, no? And paid bids? Because each kid isn't getting a check, the gym gets a large lump sum to divide? Sorry, blame it on tax season.

That's nice of the gym if they divide the money and give it to the athletes. I was under the impression any money won at competitions went directly to the gym and not the athletes.

Depends if we're talking Worlds bids or just cash prizes.

If we're talking worlds bid, they're given directly to the gym and *usually* used for entrance fees and lodging for the athletes on the team. The athletes probably don't see an individual check, but the money is used for their benefit. I know of gyms that have taken any and all Worlds bid or cash prizes money awarded and used it to buy new equipment or just for the gym's own personal use. I've known of others that put all prize money in a pot for their senior scholarships at the end of the season. Some have used it to benefit the team that earned it; either putting it toward their worlds trips or a team dinner while traveling or practice wear, etc.

But in the case of the gym using the money for personal use, it seems that prize would be taxable income and the gym should be taxed for it. Maybe they are, idk... and maybe they aren't and similar to our illegal use of music, one day a red flag will be set off to someone important and it won't be pretty. Unless there's a way to get the money into a "booster" type account that's not taxed the same, but then it would have to go to the whole team and again not be used by the gym.

(Summit Bids are a different animal and go directly to athlete accounts through Varsity. Since Varsity owns all EPs awarding Summit Bids, I don't think there's any actual "money" involved since Varsity is paying Varsity; it's more of a digital "award" and I'm guessing Varsity just gives Disney one big ole check for the park hoppers and lodging.)
