im a new coach for a high school team and our tryouts are in August. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should run these tryouts?!

Cp's tryouts are being held over 3 sessions in 2 days. They will be taught a cheer and a dance and will be evaluated on these skills as well as their tumbling and stunting. Points are assigned during the evaluation part, the number are scores are lined up in order, and then the top X number of spots will be varsity and the next X number of spots will be JV (not sure how many each coach taking this year). The tryouts are run by the Varsity coach, the assistant Varsity coach, the JV coach and I believe the MS coach will be there as well.

My daughter told me that their tryouts were similar to @CheerBank's, but the tryouts are mandatory 3 days and the 1st -2 days are devoted to learning stunts, sideline cheer, dance and tumbling; the 3rd day is the actual evaluation and she mentioned, they had the Varsity Head and Assistant Coaches, JV Coaches, I believe my daughter also mentioned 2 gym teachers too and they had a scoresheet and there a minimum score to make varsity and jv squads and there must be a minimum score to even make the cheer squads
Btw, are you @tjbettin, the first cheer coach and is this cheer squad new to the HS, if not, what was done before and do you have an assistant?....

Check out the tryout thread in the high school forum. You will be able to read at least!

Great thank you! I was just hired in a very good school district. The team, under their previous coach, went to nationals the last two years. The old coach left and now it's me and a new varsity coach. Just hoping to get as much advice and tips as possible so my first year can run smoothly. The goal is to bring the girls back to nationals this year!

Great advice! Thank you. I like the idea of the point system!
