High School Tryouts 2018-2019 Season

At our school, you can't do spirit (side-line) for football AND comp as 9th graders. There is a 9th, JV and V football team so we only allow 9th graders to cheer for the 9th grade football team. 9th graders CAN be on the V comp team however but we only had 2 9th graders on it last year. And V comp cheerleaders CAN cheer for the V fb team - or maybe only the seniors - not sure..
Also if you are a senior - you have to cheer for the V teams - regardless of tumbling skills.

As @AndyT_T said, there are many school systems where 8th grade is part of the high school and not middle school. In that case, 8th graders should be allowed to participate in the high school athletic program. And I will fully disagree that they aren't mature enough, especially if they have come from all star and have been cheering with high school kids. Honestly, your posts come across as you are a little bitter and threatened by a 12 year old.

Not at all. Here are the facts
1. Separate middle school
2. Zero all star experience
3. The BOE did not agree to this change and NJSIAA states a student can only be a varsity athlete for 4 years. Including any time under 9th grade.
4. I just wanted opinions and they do vary by state as I see.
No need for me to be bitter, I have a lg team that is successful
I was more concerned for this 12 year old who may not be ready for HS cheer just yet, after all she still has a bedtime of 8:30 per her Mom.
Thanks for all the opinions though :)

How does having people cheer for different level football team (b team, JV and Varsity) and then pulling them from those different squads for a varsity comp team not create a conflicting practice schedule.

Here all of those football games are played on different nights. So if you make varsity cheer, you do all things varsity related because cheering at a JV game would mean you’d have to miss varsity comp practice?

I have no idea !! Lol

Our 9th graders are not on our campus, as middle school is 7-9 here, but they can participate in high school sports. We normally only have a couple of freshman because it's a pain not being at the school, but this year we have 10 and have a pretty solid JV team. We always do sideline based on grade, so they are with their friends and cheering for kids they know.

As far as comp, it's always been skill based but I spoke to a lot of alumni this year and all of them said they don't think a freshman should be on Varsity. They pointed out that the freshman may be more skilled, but when the stunt group is talking about inappropriate stuff they know nothing about, it gets weird. Looking back, most of our really great freshman actually don't stick it out or don't have a good time because they don't have friends on the team and are the "outcasts" because they are young. This year, I think I'm going to keep those freshman on JV and allow them to be superstars rather than pressure them onto Varsity. I think it makes my varsity a touch weaker, but in the long run will keep those kids in the program and allow for more long term success. They have plenty of time to be on Varsity, I'm not going to rush it.

I don't usually comment on the high school board but I wanted to ask if anyone had seen the controversy about cheer tryouts in NJ? Buzzfeed (I know) had an article on it earlier this afternoon.

Of course !
It’s a few towns away from me.. so many people are angry Bc this would NEVER be acceptable for another sport at any HS
I don’t mind allowing zero cuts for sidelines.. maybe JV sidelines ? But not for comp

Yeah I thought it was pretty ridiculous and wanted to see what people on the boards thought. I would have gone scorched earth if my high school pulled this nonsense. And yeah I think they are doing this because "its just cheerleading":mad: I doubt they are doing this to the volleyball or soccer team.

I had not heard of this.

Did a quick google search of "NJ cheer tryout news" and I assume this is what you're referring to?

Parents And Students Are Pissed After An "Inclusive" High School Allowed Anyone To Be On The Cheerleading Team

I read this but it still is not making sense to me.

I get the "my daughter did not make comp/varsity/whatever the designation is, so I complained" part.

Is the district suggesting:

A. If you tryout and MAKE IT, you HAVE to go on VARSITY if you're 11/12? Ex: Junior Suzy tries out, and makes it based on whatever process, but HAS to make Varsity.

B. NO CUTS FOR ANY 11/12 who tries out AND that said 11/12s have to go on Varsity? Ex: Suzy shows up, has little to no competitive experience, can't be cut, AND has to be placed on V?

Both are completely unfair, but I was not totally sure what he was saying.

Yeah this is the school. I think it is option B from my reading of it which is even worse than option A.

Hypothetically, if I were still planning to coach and this was rolled out for me next year:

Situation A - Not ideal. Unfair, but I would not die.
Situation B - I may sign my resignation AT the board meeting because that is crazy.

Sidenote: I wonder if people who take to news/legal wrangling to get kids on teams realize what they set their kids up for? Ex: Becky's mom makes big stink about her kid making Varsity. A situation like this ensues. Becky is placed there by school board. Becky is now THAT kid.

I agree. As an Athlete I could deal with A but I would walk if my school went with B. And I have no idea why anyone thinks this is a good idea. Really not smart to put a target like that on your kids back...

The "everyone makes the team" mentality is frustrating. I had a HUGE with this issue as a first year coach this year. We had a mom who didn't agree with our decision spend weeks trying to get someone, anyone, to reverse it and put her daughter on the squad. She went all the way to the superintendent of schools. It wasn't "fair" to only cut a few, JV is a development program, ect. It got very ugly, but we stood our ground. No one would override us, so she took her kid to another school. She had made her THAT kid at our school.

A similar thing happened here with a kid from my first few years coaching. She was on Varsity my first year, but made JV my second year because her skill level never increased while other girls' did. Her mom went to the AD, principal, and district to try and get the change but they all looked at her like she was crazy. She transferred to a different school in the district and made Varsity there. She forever had a stigma over her head because of it, which was a bummer because she was a really sweet kid, it was just her mom that was psycho.

I totally get that parents want to protect their kids, but what are they teaching them by doing this? Personally I wouldn't want to be on a team just because my mommy and daddy put up a fuss, I'd want to be there because of my skills.
