With this, I think it is a matter of preference, and also the situation/environment we are in. This past season, had to make some tough decisions, easily rendered through saying we heavily relied on those outside judges scores when it came to team placement, blah blah blah, and it was generally accepted, especially when you pulled previous years notes/attendance records/tumbling session progress & attendance records, etc.

I LOVE the idea of an evaluation and the coaches pick their teams, but I also know in some areas of the country, it is nice to have that extra layer.. yes it's antiquated.. no we don't like doing it, honestly, I would prefer to be like other sports, but there is still a stigma around cheer... so slowly breaking that helps.

So yes, everyone should agree to disagree, look at their own personal situation and what works best!

Scotty you know varsity’s inner workings better than I. Isn’t STUNT a little more of a spinoff? I have always felt like Jim and the other guy wrote down the first rules to stunt on a napkin in a bar somewhere...
Very similar to NCATA (that's a whole diff argument for another day/thread). But yea it definitely doesn't have the backing and support that the other areas of Varsity/USA Cheer currently push, meaning a lot of the staff for STUNT are on their 2nd or 3rd job within their career to cover it. Which helps lower overhead but the product suffers as a result.
...all I know is it’s creating burnout.
Diluting programs... kids are being forced in to fill “stunt” spots and out of traditional cheer.
We don’t have Stunt however I have worked with Stunt the Sport schools and I was an official this past season...
I’ve never seen more kids take headers on a mat in my life trying to attempt combinationations they’re clearly not properly trained to execute because there was a district wide implementation of participation.
There’s no camp requirement for stunt... so a lot of these squads/teams are “winging” it...off of videos
It’s the equivalent of you tube coaching
I could see that completely. I think football is seeing lower numbers across the board because of Spring lacrosse. It was initially added to have another boy sport (and girls for most schools), but would be in the Spring to not clash with Football/Bball. But those multi sport athletes are getting burnt out and tired so they are picking just one, and surprisingly it isn't the one known for lifelong injuries (not that lax is necessarily safer than fb)

I'm sure there will be STUNT camps if Varsity can get the CIF to approve those for teams to attend. I mean, Varsity is the official provider of cheer things for the CIF lol... but the article doesn't go into details about what that means. Unless I missed the tweets, ya'll haven't gotten new uniforms/gear/camps provided by Varsity Spirit due to this arrangement right? ;)

I'm so late to the party, but I want to second (third? fourth?) the entire California STUNT being a nightmare. The teams and routines I'm seeing are downright scary and it is not allowing these kids the break they so desperately need. Thankfully my AD supports my decision to stick with traditional comp cheer, but I know he wishes we would make the switch. To him, it makes sense because it has a season and is against another team. To me, it's a terrible idea. I'm so tired of Varsity dictating too much in this state for their own benefit.

This escalated way too quickly. I appreciate everyone’s opinion and what they’ve experienced. Definitely some great insight and some things I may look into for future years but as someone stated earlier, I believe it does depend on your area and administration on how you conduct tryouts. From personal experience when you have over 100 athletes trying out, it makes it difficult to judge with such small coaching staff (like you stated)

If you are from California I feel you on the Sport thing ... it’s like thanks but no thanks for throwing us the “sports TITLE” bone... but really we were just slapped with a bunch of silly restrictions, given almost no benefits or real athletic priority/status ... Oh, and to top it off, Everyone keeps trying to make “Fetch” happen with HS Stunt the Sport.
So now it’s:
FROSH, JV, Varsity Sideline and basketball/PeP
Then JV/Varsity traditional competition and Gameday and now stunt the sport...
Now parents can be ticked at us year round... lol j/k
(But not really) :/

I KNOW.

I was all for cheer being recognised as a sport but did not realise the stupid bureaucratic BS that comes with it. No practice/comps on Sundays, no tryouts until AUGUST... such a headache.

In Varsity’s defense they wanted nothing to do with this Sport business

Just wanted to commend you on using a Spike gif. That’s all!

I know nothing about Stunt and how it works at HS level. Curious.

Is it all year round?

So your kids are sideline cheering, competing, and also doing STUNT?

Is Stunt a requirement in that state? As in HS must now have it?

Do you get extra stipend monies for coaching what is essentially 3 teams?

Right. Also be reasonable.

Like, me doing things a certain way does not = someone else being totally wrong. Or being a spineless weenie or whatever from upthread.

Stunt is head-to-head in matches that have a similar length as volleyball contests. I would LOVE to get it started in our area as a youth league with a focus on building fundamental skills, but it hasn’t happened yet. It’s on my list of potential major fund raisers.

There are more paticulars, but to give you an idea of how I would set up my youth league:

I would want four teams (obviously this could be expanded to accommodate larger numbers of people), have them play each other twice in a double round robin regular season, and finish in a double-elimination all-day tournament on a Saturday. I previously figured out that by scheduling such a thing, we would run the whole thing over a month

I don’t care if a parent is unhappy (I think that’s just the fundamental difference between our arguments) I think we can Agree to disagree
when the sue you personally along with the school, you have to start caring. Also, when it starts hurting the reputation of your program.

Goodness, are we still on this? Respectfully we just see this particular issue very differently. They can NAME you in a lawsuit... but unless you are found negligent or overtly discriminatory (I.E. outright discriminated against an individual based on gender, race, religion etc (which would be VERY difficult to prove and need explicit proof (because you are employed by the school) you personally can not be sued... also they must specify some sort of monetary loss for a case to even get a glance from a lawyer... so at most you’d lose your job) it would be next to impossible to prove that Susie suffered and “lost wages” or incurred any “monetary damages” (in fact, it’s likely a probable savings) due to not making a cheer squad...
and...Nope, I still wouldn’t care (this doesn’t mean I do not care about my job...)
Look at what’s going on with Hanover High right now and the coaches/school that IS caving to 1 parent & kid that didn’t make the team... they’re taking the heat... not the program or the coaches.
Their whole attempt to be “inclusive” and “protect the reputation” ... play the CYA game ... has blown up Nationaly.
Kid didn’t make the cheer squad they wanted to make her happy and put everyone on... now nobody wants on and everyone thinks Hanover was crazy to do so... zero principals learned from this. Lesson learned: hard work doesn’t pay and if I complain enough I too can get what I want and ruin it for everyone. Why even hold a tryout?!?!

If you look up matches on you tube you’ll get a better idea of how it’s run.
4 quarters of pre choreo routines
Each round specific: IE tumbling/Jumps /pyramids/partner stunting with round 4 being a combination round
Deductions are based on major and minor infractions (so like: technical issues/baubles/falls) with an overall execution impression)

Everyone is going to kill me for saying this... but I just wish a small day/two day camp “home camp” was required for Stunt the Sport ... (in high school) then I would feel SO much better
