All-Star Concussion??

I need some advice. On Monday my daughters flyer kneed my daughter in the face which sent her backwards and slammed her head in the mat. Since then she’s had a headache and nausea. The headache has not gotten worse but it is not relieved with any pain medication. Besides that and the nausea she doesn’t have any other symptoms. Could this still be a concussion?? I’ve tried researching online but she hasn’t had any dizziness or issues with coordination. So I’m unsure.

Yes - take her to the doctor for a diagnosis, but it sounds a lot like a concussion.

Yes. She should not participate in sports (cheerleading...) until symptoms subside. She should also see a doctor.

Rest, both physical and mental, is imperative, including screen time.

If baseline concussion testing was done, now is the time it will be put to use.

Definitely take her to the doctors. I had a concussion as well as a broken nose in 2015 and didn’t even know it and of course with my luck I got hit again which made it worse. Stupid alert: It was my last year of Cheer so I didn’t want to sit out but I definitely should’ve went to the drs that second time I got hit. Flash forward 3 years later I went to a concussion dr because I was still have symptoms of a concussion that indeed told me it was post concussion syndrome (PCS) and ordered me to physical therapy.

Yes, anytime someone suffers a hit to the head (in this situation it seems as though she had two points of impact: once by the knee, and once with impact from falling on the mat) they should consult with their doctor. I would call her doctor as soon as possible and explain the situation, they'll probably ask to bring her in for evaluation. Esp. since she is complaining of headaches and has nausea (two symptoms of a concussion). During the meantime, keep her out of physical activity, and try to limit bright lights & screen time.

Her doctor told me take her to ER. Just waiting for someone to come watch the baby. Thank you. I would think our gym and us parents would be more educated on concussions it’s kinda frustrating she’s done this for so many years and I know nothing.

Keep us updated! Fingers crossed it's mild.

Prayers all is well. Concussions can take a while to recover from please look to see if you have a concussion specialist in your area it does make a difference. A concussion can create frustration all around for mom and the child and a specialist can support you much more in what to expect.

NOW ON MY SOAPBOX! EVERYONE PLEASE GET A BASELINE TEST DONE. There is a test for athletes as young as 5 that is approved by the FDA but not available in all areas. Testing involves a computer test (younger athletes do it with an assistant or parent). These tests make a HUGE difference in the evaluation of your athlete in the event of a concussion. MOST high schools require them. I feel the USASF has not done what they need in this vital area of protecting athletes. I am not impressed with the education they provide and most gyms do not bother to educate parents or encourage baseline testing. I was fortunate to learn from someone else to get a baseline. It does not prevent a concussion but it can help in the healing process and not had bad things are. Most places that do baselines also educate parents on concussions as well..

The ER said it is a concussion. That she needs to rest until her symptoms subside, and that if anything got worse to bring her back.

Definitely find a specialist in your area! Good luck---I hope her recovery is quick, but don't let her push herself too fast or she'll re-injure herself and you're back at square 1 all over again.

Agreed. Follow up with a specialist ASAP. There are going to be some very important protocols to follow to help her recover. Returning to cheer should be the least of your focus right now.

Another yes vote for a specialist. Not only can they give you the specific protocol to follow, they can do the testing and compare her to average girls her age. When DD had a concussion, the concussion clinic was able to monitor her test percentiles to see when she had recovered and make sure she got back to at or above normal, also.

Hoping for a speedy recovery for her!

Another vote for a concussion specialist. When CP had hers she never even hit her head. She fell in a stunt and landed on her tailbone and snapped her head back and sustained whiplash. The force of her head going back and hitting nothing was enough to cause the concussion. Her symptoms didn’t fully appear until 3 days after. She ended up missing almost a month of school and when she did go back it was only for 3hrs and no writing, reading, taking tests or cognitive thinking. She had weekly therapy sessions and simple cognitive exercises she had to do daily. Doctors aren’t fully trained in concussions. The average adult usually recovers in a few weeks but kids can actually take longer and have symptoms longer. She’ll be going for baseline test next week.

Hope she feels better soon.
