If a rule is, “You need to cover your own booty because we can’t guarantee that our judges will be consistent,” that’s a terrible rule that rejects any responsibility for poor communication. That, to me, says the judges don’t know their own rules. One entire USA panel okays something and another panel says no? That’s just an embarrassing testament to how poorly run an organisation is.

That said, she learned her lesson that year and now she videotapes stuff. But the memory still riles me up. Girls work all year for a Nationals win... I would think that the judges could respect them enough to know their own rules, whether it’s at regionals or elsewhere. If they don’t, it’s literally like words have no meaning. The teams follow all the explicit rules to get to Nationals — even the stupid ones like no throwing props with “sharp edges” (come on... girls are doing standing fulls but we’re worried about the terror of a square sign going rogue?). I would like to think the judges could do us the honour of at least meeting us halfway.

It reminds me of that Cheer Perfection episode when CTR got a huge deduction because the judges couldn’t see the stunts in the back and “weren’t sure” if they were legal. Not even a “That’s for sure illegal, sorry our judges didn’t catch it sooner,” but a “We couldn’t see it so we’re not sure if it was illegal, but here’s a deduction anyway sorry not sorry lol.” Isn’t it their job to see the stunts? Isn’t that why were are multiple judges? At what point does the impetus fall on the judges to take some responsibility for their decisions? I swear to God, sometimes it’s like living with my undiagnosed schizophrenic roommate all over again.

Rant over. Time to glue rhinestuds on stuff and annoy the dog.

Maybe the safety judge didn’t see the infraction at the regional level.

Still coach’s responsibility. Coach’s that don’t know rules are asking for trouble.

I live in an area where judges routinely don't know the specifics of the rules and will arbitrarily assign deductions throughout the season, sometimes at the end of the season at the final big competition. And it's the same judges at each competition too. We now send in every stunt and keep the "its legal" response on our phones, incase there is ever a discrepancy from competition to competition. It's saved our butts many times with judges who don't know the rules well. Or who are using a rule book from previous years. Or I could go on and on.

That's all we've got . We do have some great judges too, but most are just too new and don't have a lot of experience in all areas of cheer (school, all-star, college). We don't have more people available, so we have to go with who we have
