every college coach i know wants their incoming athletes to have some kind of game day experience prior.
my team is hosting our fundraiser college recruit clinic this weekend. 120 athletes registered. maybe 8 do all star

That’s good to know. When I cheered in college there was no AS constituent — at least not in CA — because it just hadn’t caught on yet. So I have no idea what the HS/AS ratio is at college tryouts these days. But no worries! My anxiety tells me that my girls are always walking into a tryout pool filled with standing fulls and that their four years with me has left them woefully unequipped for the next level of cheer! So that’s cool lol.

lol our coach worries never fade. but its why we love it too.

and yeah, the AS side of cheer is very interesting to watch. especially as it relates to college for the athletes. more and more i am seeing AS athletes stop after 8th grade because they are burnt out on that side of cheer and competing. I'd love for it to stay that way so AS becomes a tumble feeder for my HS kids lol. i'll keep dreaming

Seriously, around where I live a lot of kids leave AS 8th/9th grade for HS.

Both of the skills you asked about from the videos are illegal.

Do yourself a favor and stop watching all star cheer videos looking for high school cheer material. Even if you find something legal, it’s not going to score well, especially at UCA.

Follow-up question, if you’re in the mood:

Can you explain why the two stunts in the videos above are illegal? Just so I can flesh out my understanding better. I really thought they were okay because they had bracers and I’m having a hard time discerning why not. Thanks.

Yes, and they are phenomenal. But they don’t do UCA so they’re not really on my radar.

Yes. Cheer is recognized as a sport in SC so they don’t compete out of state. My point is that S.C. (and esp GA ) teams would have the flashy difficulty that you’re looking at in all star videos, but follow similar legality for a UCA HS

I didn’t know cheer was a sport in SC and that’s why they didn’t compete out of state. In CA, cheer is also considered a sport but teams are allowed to compete at UCA because we have special dispensation or something. You could make a play for that in your state since there is precedent. I’d LOVE to see SC teams at UCA. Shake things up a bit lol.

They’re both flips with only one bracer.

Braced flips require two bracers in HS.

Both of the bracers must be in double based preps with a spotter

Ok then I think I’m confused on what constitutes a flip versus a roll. I thought a flip was one full rotation that requires two bracers (i.e. 2x braced extended to extended in pyramid or what have you). I thought a roll was a forward or backward rotation (with 1 or 2 bracers) where the flyer ends in a cradle/flatback, but assumed she could resume a rotation from the cradle/flatback position back to upright position (hence the SE stunt).

Basically, I thought a flip was an uninterrupted head/hip rotation, and a roll was a head/hip rotation “broken up” by a stop in the cradle/flatback position in the middle of it. If I’m wrong, please correct me if you can make any sense of what I wrote.

Braced Flip: A pyramid in which the top person performs a hip‐over‐head rotation while not in contact with anyone on the ground.

Braced Roll: A pyramid in which the top person performs a hip‐over‐head rotation while in contact with at least one person on the ground.
