Because wow.

They were a top three fixture in varsity co-ed for forever. Now their varsity team is medium all-girl and didn’t break out of prelims. Which is quite a drop in just one year. However I don’t think it’s the lack of boys that’s the problem because their technique is all wonky. Plus their JV team is still coed so I’m guessing lack of male interest wasn’t the issue?

Anyway, just wondering if the change was due to staff turnover or the result of some policy change. I’ve always kept an eye out for them because they were THE TEAM when I was in HS, and now it looks like their program has experienced a couple hiccups. It’s always tragic when a traditionally powerhouse team suffers a down year. They used to be the kind of team that practically groomed kids for TV-ready college coed teams.

Anyway, just curious if anyone knows what happened there. Either way, I hope they get it together in February.

Yes. Katie left Eldo and is now the Mater Dei coach.
One of several changes on the California HS scene I heard about this off season.

Wow. I wonder why she left a perfectly good Eldo team? And why the coaching didn’t translate at MD? So many questions. At least Eldo didn’t seem to suffer much for their loss. I mean I know they’re not used to second place, but it’s better than, you know, not placing at all.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW SCOTTIE?

lolol you'll have to come up with the questions first.

me and the Mrs have talked about the whys of leaving after 4 wins and a 2nd place. There is only room to go down essentially. You win 4x and then anytime you don't win, people critique. Can't be good on one's mental health to have a bad season when you get 2nd ya know? So imo Katie moved on at a good time and not necessarily in response to 2nd place. And yeah they kept their assistants and choreographers at Eldo so they shouldn't have too much of a down year!

As for MD, I know they have had some ups and downs on the mat in the past few seasons, so I am sure getting a new coach and setting the program standards have been much of the focus so far

She just took over this current season! They look great so far from the videos I’ve seen.

That’s the problem when you spoil your parents with too many bicoastal national champ seasons. They get greedy. I think very few regular people understand how hard it is to be THAT consistent year after year.

I must be the only person in cheerleading who is only a fan of the kids I coach. I mean, I respect the hell out of Candy at Greenup; but if they had a coaching change, never won again, etc...so what. Likewise with Dunbar, I respect Donna, because we can have mutually beneficial conversations about uniforms and timing and transportation, but I never just HAD to see their routines.

I like my girls and I like winning. Most of my families are low-income and pour whatever extra cash they have into their daughters’ HS cheer careers. So I figure the least I can do — right after equipping their girls with scholarship skills that might make college more feasible — is win them a national title. Of course I’ll do that for them.

Anyway, all of that presumes “liking” them.

i mean you know how much i hype my kids up. def am their biggest fan.

in the circles i run in, i hear soo much about soo many random people. cheer world is so small in that regard.
i'm a fan of other programs and their cultures (how they're run, how the kids act, how they look, how they're coached, etc) moreso than coaches themselves or the teams/routines

I’m curious to know what you all think abt teams attending a VERY far away regional for their bid... example a southern team attending the northeast regional or North east team attending a southern regional ?
What do you think the “ local “ teams would think? I’m taking abt the big name teams ... is it overkill or just a change of pace ?
Thoughts ?

We go to every competition within a 400 mile radius because we need experience in front of a crowd and need judge feedback. We are “So Cal”... but attend both SO and NOR Cal events. We are smack dab in the middle of CA so for the longest time we didn’t even know who we “belonged to”.
About teams...There are teams I always HAVE to see and love hearing about no matter what.
Greenup, Dunbar, Mira Messa, Tonka, BT, Pikeville, ELDO, Hellen Cox, Corbin, Mater Dei, and Eastside
Sometimes it’s like “Greenup got new signs and changed their sock style”... (My responses vary from “Cool” to “OH LORD, it’s the 2006 Britney & Justin break up all over again”)

Let me be more specific
Let’s say a top 5 powerhouse team from Nj/Ny has decided to forgo the huge Northeast regional just Bc and decided to go to the blue grass...
thoughts ??
Does this make sense as a coach ? Would you do this and ... why?
Northeast has NY, Nj and PA regionals...
and how does this come across to those powerhouse southern teams who are always on top as well?

That’s not really an option for us because of cost. But even if we had all the money in the world, I imagine my parents would be like, “So WHY are we carving out an expensive weekend for this regional when we could’ve qualified at a closer one in a few hours?”

I imagine the coaches of the teams that do it pitch it as like a vacation/travel opportunity. It’s fun in theory at least, but not in practice in my experience. A few years ago we went out of our way to go to a USA regional in Vegas literally because it was in Vegas and that was it. The girls had already qualified earlier in the year and we had enough judges’ feedback, but I didn’t want them to go too long without performing before Nationals and this Vegas comp occurred during their winter break (meaning no time off school) so it sounded like a great idea. We did it and the girls had a good time, but traveling out of state for a regional competition we didn’t even need was a headache that wasn’t worth it.

That’s got to be tough being in central CA. As it is, UCA really only has one viable option for us in Norcal. Do you take advantage of qualifying via video? I know it’s not the same, but it’s an option I’d love to be eligible for as far as UCA goes.
