All-Star Are Worlds At Large Bids Passed Down?

didnt generals not get a paid bid one year and ended up not making finals, when everyone thought they would... I cant remember how far back that was though.

I think this is 2013? I think Generals got paid that year, no? I believe they won NCA that year, and NCA typically hands out paid bids to division winners.

i cant remember what year it was, but they had a couple of falls in prelims? semis? and didnt make finals. I just remember a lot of people being shocked by it, because they were predicted to place top 3, so maybe it was the same year they had won nca.

I think Generals already had a paid before NCA - I believe PCM Fantasy got the paid bid that year at NCA in small senior - that was a different time and the rules were different for disbursement of bids then. Generals did not make finals in 2013 at worlds because they had two pretty bad stunt falls in semis.

I remember GBE Lime went to worlds in I think it was 2014? 2013? on an at large. Typically a team that gets paid. Still made finals, but if they didn't take that AL they would've been sitting their butts in chilly Wisconsin while another team took their spot in finals

Given that overall venue capacity isn't really a limiting factor for Worlds, I would eliminate at large bids entirely and open up the event to any L5/6 team. No need for "at large" any more. This allows teams to plan their whole season from day 1 and diminishes the importance of going to specific events just to qualify. I doubt the event producers are willing to give this up, however.

They could submit videos to the USASF at select National 2 day competitions (NCA, Cheersport, UCA) for the chance to earn an automatic qualification for semi finals. There are ways to keep up incentives while getting rid of bid chasing.

I would be happy with a minimal threshold score at a National for automatic qualification. While I understand many believe it should just be open to all, we were once at a gym that had no business at worlds but was able to receive a bid at a janky competition. The money spent and stress for all involved is enough to make me feel that some threshold should be met.

Question about at large bids. A mom was telling me that if a team declines their at large bid within 48 hours it will get passed down. Otherwise if it’s later in the season that they upgrade to a paid it does not get passed down. Does anyone know how these work?

You don’t think this would turn into just as big of a farce as the open registration for so-called “national” events? Where teams show up and don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning? There are already teams that manage to chase down a bid that have no business there. Why downgrade the level of competition even further?

Different situation but I think Senior Elite had to back out of WSF this year (injury) and missed a shot at a paid (I think this is typically where they get paid as well.) They ended up getting paid at another comp after that but it really is proof that anything can happen any weekend with bids/injuries/etc. No guarantees.

Who is deciding that a particular team “has no business there”? I don’t think Worlds is hurt by particular teams simply being in attendance. If so, I think the negatives of a small group of event producers completely controlling access to the event outweigh the small (perceived) benefit of the event being considered “exclusive” just to attend. Nothing is taken away from the winners, medalists, or even finalists if some crappy team performs and gets eliminated the first round. Who are they hurting?
