this is definitely into fetish territory as previously mentioned.

especially with the music video. 'school girl' in pop culture is a highly sexualized character or trope, as others have mentioned in relation to the idea of it being an oft used costume. but adding the knock off britney spears video, which itself was a highly over-sexed pop music video that was the launch for her entire career, puts this on a very gross level.

are we a sport or a performance art? is this Top Gun saying we don't care about cheer being in the olympics someday?
this is a mess.
Precisely.

There are definitely uniforms that show more skin than these ones. (although that in itself is a problem...)
My main issue is the implication behind it: the use of well-known tropes (eg. the schoolgirl) that feature heavily in adult material.

It's very problematic, and I'm extremely disappointed in Rebel and Top Gun for it.

I am very curious, as a gym owner that works closely with rebel and has many current and former athletes within their fold, do you feel that they push these outrageous designs or do they simply serve the customer as they say? And how do the athletes feel about them from your perspective?? I do love most of the work they’ve done with CA, I’m just genuinely curious

They will bring a wide range of ideas - especially early in the relationship until they get a feel for your preferences. But ultimately, the gym/coach decides what they want and the gym has final say - period. They have never pushed us into a particular design choice. CA and Top Gun have very different styles and preferences and our uniforms reflect that.

Rebel has not been perfect (nor have any other vendors we have worked with), but we are very happy overall with our relationship with them and will continue to use them for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately, google "cheerleader costume" and you will find plenty of costumes that look just like what 99% of teams wear, some less revealing. I'm not sure that is a fair standard.

I generally don't like themed uniforms, but these don't strike me as particularly revealing or sexy.
That’s a good point about the cheerleader costumes. I think what i was trying to say was that I dont like that a gym designed a uniform based off a costume that is inherently sexualized (at least to me).

But overall, so many uniforms in all star are way too revealing/sexy and I think it’s completely unnecessary for a sport that’s predominantly made up of children

If it is legit (and I have reason to doubt it was), it has since been deleted. I will follow up with the people I know at Rebel, because that isn't cool at all. I am surprised they were "drawn offsides" by that particular original comment, because that wasn't even remotely one of the worst ones being thrown their way.

I saw more positive comments than bad, but holy smokes! Reading through instagram comments has made me feel really, really old. Why are people so hateful and venomous online?
FYI, I found the post on Twitter.

I won't post a screenshot but to quote it:

An athlete commented "wow Varsity is winning".
Rebel replied: "we see that you're a CA athlete, which means you wear Rebel when you practice and compete. Screen shot of your comment sent to CA. I'm sure they'll love it <3"

...Seems unnecessary and vaguely threatening to me...

Not sure if you are watching Majors coverage but there was just a Cheerleaders Reading Mean Tweets About Themselves segment that reminded me of the bullying convo/Rebel thing we are talking about.

More focused on Anonymous Tweets than anything but I think any brand can take something from it re: not being rude.

Um, that’s awful. My kid’s uniform is Rebel and that pisses me off. Like I don’t want to give them my $400+ next year. How dare they??

WOw to these new Uni's. An unpopular opinion but I actually like elements of the reckless uni just wish that skirt was a bit longer and the boys top loos a bit awkward but I like the look they are going for. OO5 looks like a dance uni, love the skirt hate the rest

I misspoke earlier. I meant to say "I have NO reason" to doubt the post. I have seen a screenshot and it looks legit and, I assume was later deleted by Rebel. I agree it was unnecessary and vaguely threatening. I wouldn't put it in the major-social-media-disaster category, but it was a mistake by whichever Rebel person posted that.

Yes this was the tweet. I found it petty on rebels part tbh. id defend the athlete on this one over rebel. CA is a massive gym with massive amounts of athletes, not evertone is going to love uniforms regardless if they have to wear it or not. Rebel needs to get a thicker skin.

I don't love one of our athletes going to Rebel's social media and posting that their rival is "winning", regardless of their own opinion, but it should have just been ignored. (I also wouldn't want someone posting the "Rebel is winning" on Varsity's social media.). The athlete is not in any sort of trouble, however. That is fairly tame compared to what else I see.

Oh I know, I just thought you might like to see what was said rather than hunting through Twitter :)

Wonder how much that Top Gun uniform really was. Wouldn't Rebel have had to pay major copyright fees to Britney Spears and Co to be able to identically copy the first iconic frames of her music video? If it became so expensive to use snippets of copyrighted music, I cannot imagine the fees for copying music videos.

No, that video falls under parody free use

Ok so I still don't like the OO5 uniforms, but I just saw them live and they look decent on the floor (not phenomenal, to be clear, but pretty good). With that being said, I was talking to a few of the athletes and from what I understand the girls are pretty on board with everything, but the boys are not fans of how the jacket/attached backpack combo feel.

The routine with the music, however, is super stinkin cute.
