All-Star Battle At The Boardwalk

Maybe next year they should move this comp to the AC Convention Center. Clearly they need a third floor. It is ridiculous that J2 teams are competing at 10:00 at night on a Sunday. All comps need to end by 8:00pm on Sundays.

The venue is what makes it special though, right? It wouldn't be Battle at the Boardwalk if it wasn't on the boardwalk. Its like competing at the bandshell in Daytona. Its the space that makes it different.

lol, "special" is a funny word to use in context with the Atlantic City boardwalk but that is a different conversation all together ;)

And on Superbowl Sunday to add insult to injury! I realize not everyone loves football but this just feels wrong.

We always went to this comp and I remember listening to the Super Bowl on the radio in the car on the 3 plus hour drive home. I always had mixed feelings about Atlantic City with young cheerleaders. Especially in winter- it seems like there were a lot more creepy people hanging around in winter than in the summers there. But I did like Boardwalk Hall as a venue on the inside. and I don't recall ever competing after 9 PM and awards after 10! Yikes!

I absolutely think it's ridiculous that it is so late. I also think that checking in for warm ups at 645 am is ridiculous too. I am very glad that this does not affect my child. But gyms and coaches saw the block schedule a long time ago. It said 7 am - 11 pm. They could have made the decision to not attend. There really are plenty of other Summit bid events.

All true! Gyms often don't give parents a vote though, so even though coaches and owners (and some parents I'd assume) were aware it is still less than ideal from a parents perspective.

I'm going to sort of hijack this thread but it related to the times that athletes will compete:

Look at this block schedule Block-Schedule-RTB-OC-All-Star.pdf

It has Prep and Novice teams on Friday night from 4-8 pm. That's a day missed from school for Prep? and Novice? It was my understanding that those divisions are designed for the beginner cheerleader with a lower cost travel commitment. Some gyms have pulled out because of this crazy expectation.

Elite teams are 7 am -10 pm on Saturday and 7am -11pm on Sunday. Many of the teams that will compete at Atlantic City this weekend would also potentially attend this comp. If this comp is on your schedule, be prepared.

I’m not sure there is much special about it. The facility at the convention center is much better suited for cheer. We went to this comp the last two years and it wasn’t as packed but now there are Summit bids. Instead of allowing less teams to register they are trying to pack it in to make more $. At least a few years ago my CP won nfinity bags on her team but last year it was super cheap bags. Not my favorite competition but I shouldn’t complain as we are competing late afternoon.

I always liked this competition except for the compete times and the dance teams alternating with cheer. It used to be at the Convention Center and I believe had two separate arenas. Worlds teams competed Friday night and Saturday night and all other teams either competed Saturday or Sunday (only 1 day). My youngest was on a youth team and they competed after 10pm. Some of those littles were falling asleep as they were walking off the mat!

Wow, the block schedule that I linked has now been removed from their website.

Update: They have removed the Prep and Novice teams from this comp and given them a separate competition a few weeks later. Sort of sucks for people who made hotel reservations already. But I'm going to guess that they responded to feedback from gyms that the schedule was unacceptable. And this is why I say that our gyms have the power to choose to not attend if the schedule is too early/too late.

Our prep teams always go to RTB for their one big competition. We had to pull them this year because they had them scheduled to compete Friday. We are in Connecticut so there is no way we were going to make our parents make the 5 1/2 hour drive before they have to compete that night.

They responded to the feedback and have created a separate comp for RTB Prep/Novice on April 7th. Unfortunately for them I suspect that many gyms have already made other arrangements. Varsity pushed a little too hard this time and gyms pushed back.

It is ridiculous to have teams performing after 9-10pm Sunday. If you're an EP and you have a comp with teams essentially competing from 7am-10pm there is something wrong. You either need a bigger venue, or limit the number of teams competing, but we all know Var$ity isnt going to turn down money no matter what and until parents decide to put their feet down to gym owners and gyms stop coming to these comps nothing will change.

Agree. Funny thing is that there is a competition in Baltimore this weekend also and while they don’t have paid summit bids they do have at larges that might even go unused. The event is that small this year. Go figure.
