Seen a lot of talk on new image rules but can’t find actual rules anyone know them?

"Beginning in 2021, all teams attending the IASF Worlds must compete in a full top uniform. Crop tops, half tops or mid-drifts will not be allowed."

These new rules are BS and I feel like they’re being implemented for the “So people will take us more seriously” argument.

Why can’t they take us seriously with makeup and hair and crop tops? Is it because all those things are “girly” and “girly” = “it can’t be that hard”? Please.

I understand wanting to increase functionality and cutting costs for athletes (the “makeup is not required” rule works to that end). Fine. Great. But there’s a misogynistic stench spreading in cheer and it’s gross. If you doubt me, I’ll remind you of that “No inverted baskets for college AG because their dainty little girl arms can’t possibly do what the men can do” rule.

We can do our x-out fulls with our hair three feet high and plastic spiders glued to our eyes and sparkly sleeves lacerating our insta-ready abs. In short, we’ll do it looking like the girliest or girls — and we’ll do it well because makeup and accessories don’t make us less capable. AND we’ll do it all without the validation of Neanderthal mouth-breathers telling us we look like sl-ts all while wondering why we don’t respond to their DM’s. That’s what we’ve BEEN DOING since always. We don’t cheer for them so we really DGAF.

Now to those who disagree: YELL AT ME! Yell at me until you forget to pick up your kids from the mall! I’ve got a rainy day working at the animal rescue ahead of me so it’s either this or picking up reanimated dog poo

I'm looking at it from more of an age appropriate concept not it's too girly so to be taken seriously you have to tone it down. My CP also does pageants. The rules in the younger divisions will say age appropriate make-up. Meaning, a 7 yo might be able to have a little color on the cheek and lips so she doesn't look completely washed out under the lights. But nothing as heavy as what my almost 15 yo would be wearing. And even at 15, her makeup should be more toned down than the 2o yo.

I saw some really extreme looking bows at CS this year. So I can see where that rule can be helpful. This was the first time I had seen anything like them in cheer. They were not proportionate and well I could see how a flyer or base could get hurt.

I’m totally in favor! The part about hairstyles that work for all hair types - YES PLEASE!!!!!!! Having to either straighten my kids super curly hair or use a fake pony so she “conforms” irritates me to no end. I also like having less makeup on younger athletes. I’d also prefer a uniform that is comfortable. Coming from the dance world (I was a nationally competitive dancer for years), makeup and costumes and showmanship are totally okay for me. My daughters uniform is so uncomfortable she can hardly stand to even wear it and she has to tumble in it? I’m all in favor of less bling and more function. I don’t think it has to do with being less “girly”. I was always in very girly dance costumes, but my hair was functional and my costumes were comfortable and easy to move in. You don’t have to give up one thing to have the other.

I do agree about the hair. Hair is hugely personal. To me, telling some kid to straighten their hair when it’s really not an option is akin to telling a kid of color to wear “suntan” tights because that’s what the rest of the mostly-white team is wearing and everyone has to look the same. It’s exclusionary and unaccommodating.

Go look at the new uniform thread. It likely has more to do with the recent trends than misogyny. But don't worry. Varsity and Rebel will find a way to make a creative loophole around these rules.

Also, it's probably more about image and economics than sexism. Remember that there are parents who keep their kids away from all star due to the lack of modesty in the uniforms. This is especially true in the South. Going back to a more modest look brings back those families who feel the current trends are too much. You can call them all the names you want, but some parents feel like it is better for their kids to not show everything they have while performing amazing acts.

Remember cheer is now considered an Olympic sport. The trend to functional, athletic uniforms is a logical progression.

Yeah but they were never as popular in HS as they are in AS. When I look at AS catalogs for uniform inspiration I feel like I’m clicking over everything because they’re all crops.

I don’t know the specifics but if “covered midriffs“ still allows for sheer panels I feel like we’ll see a lot of that in the next few years. OR fabric that is “nude” in that it’s flesh-toned but opaque around the stomach. Everyone will look they have vitiligo but Rebel will just throw plastic gems on it and call it a day.

But they still allow for some AMAZING designs on gymnastic uniforms. So there is precedent for a flash factor.

I’m a huge fan of this. The full year teams at the gym I used to coach for (haven’t coached in 2 seasons now) wore a full face of makeup, even the little bitty minis. I didn’t get a say in that rule. However, when I coached prep and we only had one prep team, I got to make the decisions. They wore blush, eye liner (optional), mascara, and lipstick. Hair in a high ponytail. The parents were all brand new to cheer and so thankful. The full face of makeup and wild looking hair is too much and really overwhelming to new parents. I think natural is perfect. Stingrays does a GREAT job of this. Very athletic and professional looking.
