# 1 French braids are super hard for me and I am a hair person lol.

I'm in love with the curly low side pony. No teasing look good on multiple textures, lengths, and densities. The girls also loved that they can take their hair down after a comp and not look crazy lol. For worlds I did my entire x-small teams hair 9 girls and all but one kept that style in for the entire weekend.

I like buns but my kids would hate it.

Lastly stop saying straight hair is easy, it's not.

Theres no overarching "easy" hair style. For myself, curling my hair involves sleeping in rollers with a ton of product, and even then, I'd be lucky to have the curl last 3-4 hours before being totally flat and sad looking.

We do a french braid across the front (left to right) that is pulled back into a high pony. It's preferred if it's straight, but if you have naturally curly hair that is difficult to straighten, then leave it curled. Most of our kids seem to not have a curly hair issue.

While I understand not just letting everyone do whatever they want, I think it's fine to be understanding and lenient of everyone's natural hair situation. I'm here to tell everyone that as a former judge, there was no score for everyone looking identical. I only ever lightly considered the over all "look" of a team in that, is it athletic/age appropriate/tidy etc.

FR, us girls with straight, fine hair have our own problems.

Thank you.

Thank you.
Agreed. I cant tell you how much our first gym gave us problems because of my kiddo's "frizzy" hair. Only 2 girls of color there and they had to "fit in." Then the gym that wanted high teased ponies. Nope I'm not teasing my girl's hair. Had to get a fake pony. One coach said no fake ponies. I defied that rule lol. Then the coach that wanted high pony with curls, so had to straighten and then curl. I begged for braids because it was the best for her hair but no, all the girls had trouble doing braids so curls it was. So all the years my kiddo had to fit in to what others were doing, but not once were other girls made to fit in with what her hair could do. I'm glad to see some diverse hairstyles and allowance of natural hair styles becoming more prevalent. Lack of understanding by non poc coaches of what kills poc hair is becoming unacceptable but not quick enough IMO.

Amen, it also creates intensifies the insecurities and complexes about hair with POC kids.

I think it helps that our 2 program owners are poc. One straightens her hair weekly because shes mixed and as a result, as she says, so is her hair. The other has braids done most of the time, but currently has her hair natural. Of our poc athletes, one wears wigs religiously and has never had any problems, and the other has braids and her mom just puts her hair in a high pony and her bow.

I've never understood why people thing hair, makeup, uniform, any of it matters. It honestly doesn't as long as the team doesn't look unkempt or nonathletic.

I've never been more thankful for my gym than I am right now. Our hairstyle is "high ponytail". Doesn't matter if it's straight or curled, as long as it's on top of your head. No teasing allowed, just leave it natural and make sure there's no whispies. It's so simple and easy, I absolutely adore it.

YES.

I have always been very conscious of that as a POC and coach. My athletes have been mostly non-POC and I got some parental negativity at times when someone suggested a hairstyle and I said no because my POC athletes either could not do them, or were going to kill their hair if they tried.

Ex: Coaching in the POOF era and everyone asking if we can do hair a la SOT/Cheetahs circa 2012. Best way to ruin Black hair? Back comb it for a poof hump then tease. No.

Then you gotta douse it in harsh hairspray, to put the cherry on top.

For a moment, I thought you were saying your kids were asking RIGHT NOW to do the front poof. I was about to scream noooooooooo. That style is most definitely better dead.

Does anyone remember the girl saying she got cut from WE because of her hair? Like circa 2015? I wasn’t really paying attention to AS at the time but the kiddo and mom said she was cut because of her hair, and the WE director said it was because of her attitude. Anyway the mom went public with it. I’d link to the news article but the kiddo at the center of it is still a minor so if you need a refresher, feel free to google. It was picked up by multiple news outlets.

Anyway I was always curious what happened with that and if they worked it out.

I remember it but dont know the outcome of it.

I remember being very annoyed that reporters handled it with an underlying tone of, “Cheer is outdated and racist and we are RIGHT to make fun of it.”

The girl was asked to leave the gym because her mom shouted obscenities at the coaches with other athletes in earshot.

From a judge.

"As an International cheer and dance judge of over 25 years I, too, am happy to see the considerations being made...hair/makeup, etc...for athletes of all ethnicities.

Teams are not "marked down" for a few athletes having a different hairstyle or "scored higher" because of a uniformed hairstyle that may or may not appear natural or comfortable for some athletes. I truly wish that someone would convey this to gym owners/coaches."

Ok Coaches, where ya at? See above.
