Kind of an interesting graphic from @poorlawyer on twitter. These are the highest D-scores accredited and performed in competition since the start of the last World Championships. Shaded in green are the D-scores that would probably keep pace for advancing to event finals internationally.

Interesting that MyKayla has the 3rd highest D-score average in only 3 months since returning to elite.

Someday I hope cheer can have a point system similar to this.
Side note: Simone can mess up a whole lot and still win lol

Crazy how much her D scores protect her from minor mistakes.... These numbers really emphasize how she really is in a league of her own and it's just a fight for second place at this point.

(Also, would love, love, love if cheer had a scoring system like this.)

because I'm still not sure I entirely understand this event qualifying method...Is Jade completely out of the running for being selected for the 4 person team? I thought that was how I understood it, but I heard a commentator say something about qualifying via the event cup but that "she would rather be one of the four" and I now have no idea.

This article is a year old, but does a good job explaining the qualifications into the apparatus spot... and why USAG should NOT have let her do it (the apparatus cups are athlete specific; there are two other routes that could get the US two additional spots to the four person team that are not athlete specific that would have made more sense.)

I also hate that she'll know by February essentially that she has a locked in Olympic spot while the rest of them duke it out. and again what if she gets hurt?!? the US can't sub in the next athlete, the next cup qualifying athlete would get her spot.

The Jade Carey Problem | The Balance Beam Situation

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it kind of sounded like Jade may be trying for one of the 4 AA spots even though she's pretty much all but wrapped up a individual spot. Is that true or is she just keeping her options open?

Jade Carey just posted her triple double onto a mat to Instagram with the caption “almost ready”. And it looks dang good.

I was wondering why she would ever let Riley withdraw due to illness/exhaustion. That explains it. Because it wasn't because she cares about Riley's well-being.

Also related, Anna Li (2012 Olympic alternate) and her mother are under investigation for abuse... but not until they named Anna as an Athlete Representative and then quickly realized they effed up when there was backlash. USAgym just continuously failing.

I have no dog in this fight, but I believe there's usually some truth to both sides when allegations like these come out. IMO, investigations need to run their course before we start assuming that every single statement is completely true. Additionally, different kids have different experiences. We always say in all star cheerleading that not every gym is for every kid, and it's probably the same in gymnastics.

Absolutely! I've obviously never been coached by any of them, but Maggie's disdain for her athletes' injuries and well-being has been pretty evident for years. I've heard rumors about Anna's mom, and didn't think Anna had been coaching long, but it wouldn't be surprising if she adopted a similar harsh coaching style. If the investigation was already in process though, naming her to be the athlete representative was in poor taste.

Also:

If Jade takes the World Cups' spot for the Olympics, can she compete AA? or is it solely for individual events?

Li denies wrongdoing, alleges abuse by Nassar

My sympathy for her as a victim of Nassar but it does not erase or deflect the abuse allegations.

I also find it confusing that the article implies that Li "steered injured athletes to Nassar" but then she claims she was a victim? I understand who the whole Larry Nassar thing worked and how people didn't know what he was doing because of his "doctor" title but this whole thing is weird. Seems like a Kevin Spacey kinda move, tbh.

This really rubs me the wrong way. I believe victims, and odds are as an Olympic athlete in that era it's more likely she was abused by Nassar than was not... but I feel like she's just deflecting the negative press of alleged abuse by saying "I can't be an abuser because I'm a victim of abuse!"

She may or may not have committed verbal/emotional abuse of her athletes, I don't know. As a victim of sexual abuse, my heart hurts for her and hope she finds healing. But these two should events should not be linked.

Yeah, it’s ill-timed by just a squig. I believe she was abused for all the same reasons you do, but the timing feels just a touch exploitative.

McKayla Skinner posted a video of herself training a triple double. Someone on Reddit made a side by side comparison of all three videos.

The Triple Doubles side by side : Gymnastics

Interesting to see how they all perform them differently. Simone is really pushing athletes to up their game, especially the US team. I'm interested to see what the rest of the world will do if the US has multiple triple doubles.

I remember first watching Mikayla competing with the juniors years ago. She’s about my age and I’ve always looked up to her so much. To see her come back, and put this on the floor, is just so amazing.
