Wasn't sure if one existed yet. If it does, forgive me.

Wheeling Park (WV)

(There is no anxiety like "watching YT videos of WV cheer with no mat" anxiety!)

That full down is honestly one of the most pointlessly dangerous things I’ve ever seen choreographed into a cheer routine. They put a catcher on her right side and her back?! She was spinning away from her catchers! Teams trying that in practice is a catastrophic injury waiting to happen.

I’m not going to lie, I think WV’s stubbornness about not putting some mats under those kids is irresponsible. Someone could get seriously hurt. For what?
I cant honestly say why they dont. It may be stubbornness but it also may be lack of funds for schools to have full dead mats. Some schools can afford it and some cant. So they may actually have it their heads that if all cant afford it, then none will have it to level the playing field. It is one possible theory. I know that our school doesnt have a full dead mat. But the girls practice on a couple of strips.
Some of our rules are a flipping joke here in WV and they dont allow some elements because the kids dont have mats. You wont see fulls or double downs and I believe baskets as well because no mats. But I guarantee all the moms, coaches, athletes, want mats. But ya got folks entrenched in the WVSSAC and yea some stubborn folks as you say, but money IS an issue here as well.

See also: WV appears to only allow tumbling up to a tuck, but it appears that the kids can full down from stunts? Makes no sense.

Honestly....

there’s not too many serious injuries that can happen on hardwood that would be prevented by landed on 2inches of foam and some carpet.

repetitive use injuries, yes...but if you fall in such a way as to break your neck, or another bone...or whatever, 2 inches of carpet-bonded foam likely isn’t going to make much difference.

fulls, and baskets are prohibited on hardwood everywhere, not just WV

double downs haven’t been legal in school cheerleading in several years, mat or otherwise.

Right

Right. I would hope so if no mats. Makes sense. Its other rules that are a joke that I was referring to but I truly wish our kiddos had mats for sure.
