Is it acceptable for team reps to have cocktails while at comp?

My CP just joined a team at her first comp (Day 1) she noticed that team mom would disappear several times and appeared tipsy as the day went on. On Day 2 team rep was getting something out of backpack and CP said she had at least 2 ziplock bags filled with 5-6 mini bottles in each.

At second comp she asked my daughter to hold her cup, when she looked inside the cup there were 2 mini bottles. This really upset my CP because she’s 14 and was afraid that she would get caught with it.

Personally I think this is unacceptable. She’s supposed to be looking after the team. I am allergic to alcohol, so I don’t understand the appeal of it. Am I overreacting?

Also, at both comps the meet times were in the afternoonish from 10-1. We were done by 4 pm at both comps. And at the last comp we met at gym to warm up and she drove several athletes to the venue.

I don’t think you’re overreacting, but I have a pretty strong stance against alcohol mixed with any youth activity. It’s baffling to me that our society has come to believe that showing up to the cheer competition, the softball tournament, the basketball tournament, etc requires one to have access to a cooler and get “to’ up from the flo’ up.” It’s no surprise parents act the way they do watching their kids at these events while they’re inebriated. Finding sports officials was never a problem until parents started being drunk at youth sports events.

If this bothers you, take a stand and tell the gym owner you will not tolerate this behavior putting your child at risk. It may be that you need to find another gym. This woman is a bad influence on kids for whom she should be setting an example. The only thing worse are the countless coaches I see on comp weekends behaving the same way.

U should be concerned. I would definitely say something especially if she’s driving multiple athletes around!!!! As a parent I would want to know if my daughter was in a car with her.

Thank you for your opinions. I feel like it’s a no brained but people’s opinions on what is appropriate regarding alcohol is very diverse.

Your poor daughter has it rough. You have issues with both her high school coach and her all star program. Hopefully they’ll get their acts together and she can have more productive high school years.

Actually the Allstar program is great. Lots of good coaches in the gym but she’s ended up with same coaches last 2 years. She needed a break & has been in extensive rehab since last season and couldn’t try out. They had an athlete quit and called her to join the team. This is her 3rd season with them. They always have her health in mind and have been really good at playing to her strengths and working around her injuries. They yell when they have to but will have heart to heart when she needs it. I definitely see a difference in her confidence over the last few years. I’m very grateful for that.

just the issue with the tipsy team mom. Lol

No, not acceptable. Her behaviour actually seems like she has some problematic alcohol use going on. This isn't the usual #mommyneedswine stuff that some cheer moms seem to go for. Maybe express your concern to the gym owner...not only about your own discomfort with her being tipsy "on the job" but that maybe she needs a little help.
