For all of you holding varsity over a fire, they are far from the only sport trying to hold on to their seasons. Both my son’s soccer program and my daughters softball program are sending messages about getting back in it. The softball league wants to get this season in in May and June, what are they smoking?

I believe that part of it is psychological...trying to give kids something to look forward to.

THIS is what I am seriously saying.. it is not just cheer. Soccer seasons and travel volleyball are trying to be saved too. It's many youth sports/activities.

I do agree it may be time to pull the plug, but it's not just cheer.

Yes. My cousin owns a softball training gym. They have yet to stop or slow business as usual. The parents and kids are all happy to be going. It's not just cheer.

Which state is that? Some of us (my house anyway) are under pretty strict rules to not leave the house except for food, pharmacy, or to exercise outdoors alone.
No, it is not just cheer but so far our lacrosse league has not suggested started the season in October which is akin to pushing these end of season events back too far. The question remains how practical it is to have this season run into next? Who is willing to delay tryouts, replace athletes that have moved, delay choreography etc?

What do y’all think of sleep away camps? My girls are signed up for 2 weeks in June. The camp is planning to go ahead as of now. I’m thinking maybe if they can test everyone before they come? Or maybe the crisis is over by then... Wishful thinking.

I agree. Our school district partners with Disney's Youth Performing Arts program and if your child stays in choir, band, or orchestra for the 3 years of MS, they can go on the Disney trip at the end of 8th grade. Our music teachers said their kids fall into three groups, 1) the kid that wants to be in a music program with or without the trip, 2) the kid that joins because of the hype of the trip, but ends up enjoying music and stays in the program, and 3) the kid that goes to Disney and never picks up their instrument again. Ending the season and team bonds abruptly would definitely have an effect on kid #2. Disappointment, time lapse and distance are pretty much textbook marketing and business don'ts, especially when it comes to kids. No matter what happens, kudo's to all the gyms that are setting up virtual team "practices" keeping those team bonds going, these kids need that more than ever.

@123jump4! Honestly, I'm truly impressed with how countries and companies are stepping up and stepping in to help. I'm not delusional, but I'm hopeful, and I tell my kids to roll with their plans knowing they may or may not happen.

Everyone’s trying to salvage something. Realistically, I know that I probably won’t be having a piano recital this year. But I am still setting up lessons with my kids via Zoom and continuing to work on their recital pieces, even though we won’t be back in our building before the end of the semester. There are two reasons. The first is to keep paying customers happy, so that hopefully, next fall, I still have students, but the more important one is that I don’t want to disappoint my kids, who have already lost their usual school routine and contact with their friends. I a, fully expecting to teach an extra month I won’t get paid for because I want to keep them going until the studio is able to reopen, and that won’t be until schools reopen-which will be this summer at earliest. I can also tell you it is costing me more time to figure out online lessons than it would to just show up and teach.

Multiply times about 10 for even the small D2 gym my DD cheers at. They’re trying to keep online training going, trying to keep the customers interested and happy. And like my recital, I suspect they at least want to hang on long enough to have the end of the year banquet-and if they have a chance to do a virtual competition where they can submit videos, they’ll do so, to give the kids something. But, just like my piano studio, it will be summer before they have a chance to go business as usual.

This. So much this.

A friend does pageant hair, make up, and coaching. She is moving to virtual coaching but it's hard for her as a lot of the events her coaching students were scheduled to compete at were either cancelled or postponed with no new date yet. If the event is somehow not cancelled, people are pulling their kids voluntarily. Parents are having a hard time deciding if they want to keep coaching appointments for an event that has no new date yet, because money.

Yup! Yes and yes- here in CA... everyone is STILL trying to talk about saving all sorts of seasons and events and we are in heavily restricted LOCK DOWN and probably will be slightly longer than most...

TN. We are supposed to be self isolated an only essential employees out. I work downtown, the city is basically a ghost town. The suburb I live in had the first cases here, so we are basically a ghost town as well. The suburb my cousin lives in is basically business as usual. I went there earlier this week to leave something on my uncles porch and the traffic was normal. People out and about everywhere, seemingly unaware of whats going on in the world. She said they're stopping after this week for one week bc of the gov request, but as of now she fully believes it will just be one week off. I was dumbfounded to see that after the bubble I've been living in for weeks.

In IL our stay at home order started Saturday evening. There's "strict rules" but also somehow GameStop and Michael's craft store are allowed to stay open claiming they fall under "essential businesses." There are too many loopholes.

Crazy. We are in the same bubble as you and based on the stories my nurse and doctor friends are telling I am content staying right in my house!

Oh no! The longer it takes for everyone to social distance the longer this whole thing goes.

My daughter's special Olympics state games swim competition was just cancelled as well as her entire swim team season. She's been seriously struggling with this.

I suspect Varsity's main office is either working from home or not at all. We're under a safe at home order, and I don't think they count as essential. (Their HQ is only about a mile from my house).
