Is the Summit free-for-all really still going to happen a little more than a month from now? I haven't heard of states allowing groups of people to congregate within 6 feet of each other yet, which means no stunting... never mind full run-throughs of routines. And several states are still under stay-at-home orders indefinitely. Kids haven't had proper training in over a month and would need to be eased back in before even thinking about running a full routine safely.

How in the world is anyone actually going to attend this competition in a few weeks? Var$ity can't hold an event if nobody can go. And something feels off about holding this competition when Worlds is canceled and most of the country can't attend even if they wanted to. I'm curious which gyms are still pushing to attend this, and how it's even possible given how close-contact a sport like cheerleading is.

This is advertised as a combined dance/cheer event and many dance studios have been doing "living room" sessions and will be able to social distance once they're allowed to resume in studio. Some people are fixated on Summit's of years past, and some are looking at this as an opportunity for Disney and Varsity to re-open their businesses, get employees working, and provide some closure for those studios/gyms that want it. They specifically advertised this as a "One of a Kind 2020 Summit Championship" and said many people wanted an end of year event, they can only have it if they're able and realize not everyone will be able to attend. They, also, said they would be revising the score sheet obviously knowing these teams won't and can't be where they were. They aren't delusional, they are businesses that have to continue to plan and be fluid within the guidelines they're given. They want their employees and customers back, and are more than likely sitting on hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of Summit merchandise waiting to see if they have to eat that, too.

We're starting to open here, which is cool with me, we've had single digit cases daily for a few weeks, our number of deaths is at 7 and we have no one presently in ICU. So they've opened patios at restaurants at 50% capacity or 1 person for every 10 sq meters, whichever is less. You can get your hair cut, but no nails done (don't ask me how they made that distinction). They've resumed paramedical practices with restrictions on PPE and spacing etc.

The dental clinic I work in is seeing emergencies and urgent patients. Except, those only make up about 30% of the practice. So most of us aren't back at work. Probably won't be until we can resume preventative and maintenance treatment like cleanings and aerosol generating procedures like fillings.

We just never got it "that bad" in our province. I look at whats happening in Ontario and Quebec and think its bonkers that they're opening.

6 weeks and people are going to compete?? I can’t c it happening .

Gyms around here have opened, but its far from a team or group thing. Limited people in the gym. Very spread out, basically just privates really. There's no signs of having a team practice anytime soon. I highly doubt any version of a competition will take place.

Similar here. Privates or classes with physical distance, masks, no spotting. Normal cheer activities are obviously way more risky and I’m not sure there is an exact plan yet how to proceed. Wait & see is fine with me.

CP is happy to be able to tumble again at least! Little rusty but doing ok.

I'm not sure Disney will be open and able to accommodate a cheer competition by the end of June, but I also don't understand the meltdowns anyone is having about whether gyms go or not. If you aren't going it has zero affect on you if anyone else chooses to go. Using the argument that it's not longer the "best of the best" is kind of a joke because the Summit - and even Worlds for that matter - never has been the best of the best. Vilifying Varsity for choosing to move forward with their business makes zero sense to me and there are plenty of things I fault them for. For gyms and families that are choosing to go, all the power to you.

Summer camps are being closed. A lot of summer activities people have looked forward to are not here this summer. If this is the one thing gyms, athletes, and families are looking forward to that they can do it safely.......more power to them. Who cares if it is not a true Summit victory. It is a crazy year. Mental health is very important too. It is not a stretch to say that giving an athlete who is struggling something to look forward to and enjoy during all of this chaos also can be potentially life saving. We have to consider the mental health of the teens and athletes during all of this as well.

Unfortunately we won’t be open anytime soon. Our lockdown was extended for another 30 days. Which pushes tryouts / and leveled practices into at least July - August at this rate. The 20/21 season should be interesting. Hoping this turn around soon here.

We just never got it "that bad" in our province. I look at whats happening in Ontario and Quebec and think its bonkers that they're opening.

Well, Quebec is only opening up regions because they have close to nothing happening so they don't need to be closed for the rest of us in the greater Montreal area who have all the hospitals and long term care hospital centers (CHSLD in french) where almost 90% of the mortality is.

Greater Montréal is a 4,2M population, so half of the province of +/-8,5M...I cant speak for Ontario because they count their cases and deaths differently than us here in Quebec but with a 15M population, they sure will have more cases and will also open up gradually, probably region by region too.

By comparison, Winnipeg has a 750k population if I'm not mistaking, which is approximatley what some regions of Quebec or Ontario are.

Also good to know, in Quebec, almost every death is by default Covid related, so that blows up the numbers, plus, it seems we are testing more than most of other provinces or even countries, we are up to more than 10k tests per day so that also plays into the numbers, more testing = more cases.

Here, even if what you read seems pretty bad, rest assured that everything is going ok, media tends to make it seem worst and people are freaking out because some of them have been staying home for 54 days now... But for those of us who still have to work, that have had to face our fears from day 1, things are a bit different.

I live in Montreal, the epicenter of the crisis in Canada and me, my girls and my girlfriend have worked every day from the start, we take walks, we do our groceries, etc. and it's almost buisness as usual except from social distancing and all other safety measures. That said, gyms wont open soon, neither are hair dressers or anything like that, our hospitals are filled up, we do have beds available (1000 per our PM and DPH) but we are missing a lot of health care workers (In quarantine, at risk, or just out of fear) so the situation is critical for the health system but as soon as we get it under control, we will slowly start to open..For now, we are scheduled to open up Montreal by may 25, but it could be pushed back, it already was 2 times. (We were scheduled to start reopening by may 11th, then 19th, now 25th).

Anyhow, glad to see you're doing well there in Winnipeg ! Keep it up and stay safe !

Talking about things opening up, Disney's starting to come up with a plan, don't know if it was shared somewhere else on the boards but here it is : Disney States Walt Disney World Will Have Limited Capacity Upon Reopening | Inside the Magic

Temporary Closures at Walt Disney World Resort Temporary Closures at Walt Disney World Resort

Was sent a post this weekend that Disney hopes to open to instate residents only this summer, and hoping to welcome national visitors from other states in the fall. It did not address international visitors. All limited numbers of course. I'm sure that's just a working plan that could very well change 10 more times.

The "Summit" event is cancelled....did Varsity cancel it, or did Disney? Regardless, it's cancelled and it should have been cancelled weeks ago.
My heart breaks for all those athletes that got their hopes up 2 weeks ago when they were told there would be a year end event in mid-June. Also for any parents that started scrambling to make arrangements to attend....travel, time off from work, finances, flights, hotels....etc. All to have it pulled out from under them in just over 2 weeks. While so many kept saying it was important to give the kids something to look forward to, something to hope for...this almost feels cruel to me.....:(

not surprised. More surprised that they tried to push for something so soon after worlds dates. I dont know how close of a relation varsity has with disney, but im kinda surprised disney even entertained a comp in June when there has been numerous projections that the parks wouldnt be fully opened by then.

Well they tried! Many of us never thought this could have been pulled off given the real life tragedies unfolding around us, and the reality that the vast majority of gyms have not yet reopened for full team practices yet. Hopefully those heartbroken athletes had adults in their lives who were preparing them for the inevitable and while disappointed they can focus on the best 2021 season possible.
