I knew a lot before watching the doc but I did not know Maroney was forced into signing an NDA. Explains why she has never come forward, or has she ever made a statement?
She has made statements. Media had mentioned the NDA around the time of the trial. USAG revoked the NDA fine during the trial when everyone found out about it, clearing her to speak if she so wanted. Of course, the NDA was illegal under Cali law, so there's that.

ohh ok. yeah watching the doc was the first time i heard about the NDA so wasnt sure.....

What a well done documentary. As a lifelong Maggie Nichols fan, this was a punch to the gut. I never made the connection that her coming forward was why she was left off the team. But that just makes so much sense. Thankfully, shes proven in her NCAA run that she is and always has been the GOAT behind Simone. My prayers go out to all 500 of Larry's victims, I hope they are finding peace knowing he's rotting where the sun cant shine.
yes. that and the part about her parents saying the media and cameras that typically marked where they sat during the seasons competitions were gone come trials. As a parent that had to be a glaring red flag on the most important day of the girls gymnastics career at the time.

It’s scary to think that because of the similar environments(little girls and boys spending long hours alone with intense adult coaches), of gymnastics and cheerleading, this could happen in the cheer world as well. And it could be covered up just as easily. Just scary. Plus cheer is pretty poorly regulated by USA Cheer/USASF sadly.

Yeah, she's made a couple of statements in the last few years. Poor McKayla had a hell of a time. Her coaches were also extremely abusive and have been sued several times.

Yes this is why closed practices should be done away with and gyms need to figure out how to deal with susie moms that come with open practices. Open practices protect both the athlete and the coach.

I allowed closed practices because my child was in middle school/high school and I figured that she was old enough to tell me of any issues. Looking back, I never should have allowed a closed practice ever. She did NOT tell me of any type of inappropriate sexual behavior. She was not aware of any type of those issues at her gym. But now that she is out of the sport, she has told me about bullying by by both coaches and owners. Always in close practices where parents can't see.

wouldnt really surprise me if a lot of gymnasts from other countries come forward with tales of abuse or sexual abuse, especially china and romania, maybe even russia.....

Nothing excuses Martha Karolyi's horrible actions and behaviors. I'd guess the emotional and physical abuse were the norm for her growing up. It is sad how cycles of abuse can repeat themselves.

Ever heard of Sokova’s case? It caused so much outrage among the gymternet community, our hearts all hurt for her.
I was like an old lady: Teenage Russian gymnast retires after hip replacement surgery - The Washington Post
Imagine needing HIP-REPLACEMENT SURGERY at age 16 for a, otherwise, very healthy girl.

China has the infamous Coach Wang Qun Ce, he has broken so many amazing Chinese gymnasts, I’ve lost count. Coach Qiao Liang (Known as Chow in the U.S. - Gabby Douglas and Shawn Johnson’s coach) has been able to break that cycle, but he hasn’t been back in China since the start of the pandemic. Who knows what coach Wang has been doing to the poor girls.
