I've watched a couple of routines so far and have to say I've seen a few falls, touchdowns etc so the idea that teams will keep going until perfect is not true as of now...

That's good to hear. There will be so many unnecessary injuries and extreme fatigue if teams are forced to do endless fullouts for these virtual comps, especially if the entire season ends up being virtual. And Suzy is going to feel terrible if her team is forced to stay late after practice to run yet another fullout because she fell (I don't think the parents would like practices running overtime either). Plus, it might be easier to keep a team motivated if they gradually build their performances throughout the season instead of being perfect for some virtual event in December.

Our coaches decided no matter what they are submitting the first take, even with 10+ falls (which did happen on a younger team). I agree with their reasoning that it’s no longer the same cheerleading we were used to, but I’m competitive enough that if two or three takes is what it takes to win and that’s what everyone else is doing, it’s hard to explain why we don’t follow suit.

Yeah it’s actually been really eye-opening. I just assumed everyone could squeak out a good take and then judging would just be a case of running the numbers. But teams have been all over the place in their ability to hit. I think it really offers a look into how hard this season has been so far.

This is especially true for the HS virtual comps which I’m assuming are run the same way as AS. I’m seeing deductions all over the place in what are presumably “best” takes. Like double digit numbers of deductions.

Question:

Exactly how long is the filming window open?

I mean, if it's open say 11/30 to 12/3 and your gym has other teams to record and a finite amount of gym space/time - it CAN end up being as high pressure as an in person comp.

See also: It's during COVID and floor time is complicated depending on your state, its restrictions, etc.

Let's say Sprinkles Athletics has 5 days to get Mini 1, Youth 2, Senior 4, Junior 5, and 2 Worlds teams recorded, with 4 days and one full sized floor. Avoiding all other class and practice times because COVID.

Then add in the fact that where they live, the gym can (for example) only be at 25% capacity.

All those things considered, it probably DOES become a "We have 2 hours on this floor" situation and at the end of the night, what you get is what you get and you have to choose one to submit.

It's probably worse for schools if they are open, I bet.

Gym space is at a premium in regular years, add a pandemic and I am sure there are some in a "we have one day and maybe one hour" situation because the gym is in use every other day.

I would think most World teams could hit zero given a whole practice/couple of hours. When my middle CP was on Blacklight, they could not leave practice until they hit zero at least once.

It's reasonable for a Worlds team.

But it's probably incredibly challenging if you have say, a Junior Prep 1.1 full of kids who have never really cheered, or a Mini 1 who may not understand "we literally have one practice to film."

In those cases I wondering if it sometimes becomes a "one and done - we get what we get" situation. Because I don't see multiple fullouts going over well with certain ages/levels.

I think you nailed it with this assessment. We haven't filmed anything yet but another team in our gym that has was given 2 hours , which is one practice. That is it. We don't have the floor space to keep going or else it encroaches on another teams time. In hindsight it makes total sense, though initially I was envisioning lower level teams getting bumped or sr. teams going through the night.

Are masks not required for your video submitted routine?

Also how did SE get 0 deductions? They literally had a AB front and center of their standing tumbling, right at the beginning of their routine nonetheless

Probably not. At the live comps we’ve been & going to, masks are not required in warmups and when competing. Everywhere else they are. You can take it off to eat something though.

Am I correct in seeing that SE received no deductions this weekend? Or am I misreading something?
You aren't missing anything, though the judges clearly did. Cheer updates too only listed a BB.

I think we are following local law, so for our state we would need to wear them for submissions bc they are required indoors but if we went to a state where it is not mandatory we wouldn't wear them. Varsity has said they are not required during the routine, but of course they can't break the laws either...

we are competing in person this weekend, in our gym has decided to no masks just because we feel it can take away from the performance aspect, and we have multiple athletes at our gym, including me, with anxiety with the masks. Mask are not required by law in the state we are competing in (sometimes required by business though), however as soon as we compete they have to be worn around the venue. And we practice in the mask for stunting still.
