All-Star Covid-19 / Varsity Response

I think Varsity is subject to wherever the event is being held.

So even if they tried to issue blanket guidelines, you'd get:

*"Our city doesn't require that, we're not doing it."
*"Our state requires xxxxxxx, this event is unsafe."

Or "we refuse to attend any Varsity events because ..."

I think a private company could set rules for their events? If you don’t want to follow the rules then don’t attend. I’m sure that happens in other situations. For example you have to wear a shirt to enter a store haha.

I think they can have set company rules but each state has different local regulations that have to be followed as well. I do know their rules were above and beyond and enforced at the comp we went to. I was pleased and am not usually pro Varsity on most things. Lol!

They could absolutely have uniform standards for competitions for covid this season. They just do not want to.

A team for the gym I coach at went to ATL this past weekend to compete.

2 teams (not scheduled to compete) in our gym had covid cases prior to the competition. The team competing had a covid case, competed, and then officially announced the case today...

It's the recklessness that makes me so upset. I really have no words right now.

Not directed at you, but maybe I missed the fact that TGLC was walking around the venue without masks. First I have heard of it and normally anons will take that and bash athletes all over social media.
For anyone outraged that they did not wear masks while warming up/competing - do you wear a mask when you are home with your family? These teams spend as much time if not more in close contact with each other as immediate family members do. For anyone complaining that teams are not wearing them while on the floor it seems hypocritical to me if you are doing the same thing around family and friends. Not to mention that athletes from every other sport are not wearing masks while practicing or competing.

The whole point of them wearing masks at practice is to prevent them being exposed at practice or exposing others. In theory if they are acting as they are supposed to at practice this should be all of their first exposure to one another when they're on the floor. Additionally, heavy breathing/panting associated with strenuous exercise aerosolizes secretions much more than normal breathing does and sends them farther.

It is completely different than being around the people you live with.

Pro sports are being tested every day and forced to live in a "bubble" separate from everyone except the people on their team and their coaches, and they still have had outbreaks. Again, completely different.

Exactly. And until they do no one should be competing in person.

This is exactly why there should be no in person competitions right now. People are literally going to prioritize cheerleading trophies over peoples lives.

Completely agree. The bid took priority over safety. Meanwhile the gym is still open, mats are being moved outside and staff continues to not wear masks. Time has proven if you give someone an inch they will take a mile.

No words for how angry this makes me when I hear that people, or parents don’t say anything, and choose to be around others when they test positive.

This kind of behavior comes from the coaches and the gym owners. They knew. They likely told parents to cover up symptoms or delay testing. It was absolutely intentional to do this so they could get a bid. The fall out from their decisions has real life consequences. It also makes getting back to normal and restarting the economy that much hard. Look, I have kids who were on cheer abilities teams years ago. Every time they went to big competitions like Cheersport and UCA, one of my kids wound up hospitalized. We had to stop cheer due to the risks and their medical issues. With all the gyms that had come to competitions when sick policies, giving tyelnol and soldiering through any illnesses, and other behavior like this, it made participating in a cheer abilities team too risky for them. This was all pre-covid. It does not surprise me to hear of this behavior even during a pandemic. People have mixed up priorities. It makes me sad because there are people who are truly hurt by this. I looked at the schedule for BUBT. There was 1 cheer abilities team. This division has been seriously hurt in all this. These athletes have suffered a lot in this pandemic. I know of gyms that have cut their cheer abilities teams this year because of covid. The athletes who need this connection and opportunities are being hurt. I love all star. It has truly blessed my kids and have truly bettered their lives. It really makes me sad to see what is happening this past year. I hope and pray this industry survives and that gyms do not close. I just hope that people's lives do not become collateral damage in the quest for a summit or world's bid............

Found this when I looked for news involving Dallas convention center. It says

“Also, according to City of Dallas sources, the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center will become the area’s headquarters for coronavirus vaccine storage and distribution, including 24-hour manned security, possibly until as late as June, 2021. The vaccine effort will prohibit any conventions from taking place, but sources said the city will be compensated for use of the hall to more than make up for the losses of scheduled conventions.”

City, county shutter Dallas Safari Club in-person 2021 convention

That sounds bleak for holding a competition. Is there anywhere else in the area where they could move NCA? They don’t need a full arena if spectators will be limited/not allowed. They could even try something like Levels 1-3 in one location and 4-6 in another to cut down on crowds. I hope they at least try. In-person competitions can be run safely if they try. We aren’t hearing any stories of cheerleaders, their moms, their grandparents, their aunts or cousins dropping like flies or having severe struggles with this virus because of cheerleading practices/competitions. I’m fully aware it’s a serious situation, but it’s a situation that our sport seems like it can work around like every other sport is doing and handle pretty safely if they just try. Virtual comps (aka a practice runthrough in your gym) will get old fast I think.
