Covid doesn’t transmit via surfaces. Or, it’s very unlikely. From what I understand these are the rankings in likelihood of getting the virus at a comp.

1. Hanging around team mates talking & taking selfies without mask or with your mask pulled down.

2. Warmup & compete in no mask, get it from a team mate.

3. Compete in mask and still get it from a team mate.

4. Compete in no mask, get it from a previous team. Unlikely but could be possible with the new more contagious strain.
but kids are already practicing together for weeks, possibly without masks, who knows what goes on at the practices.... masks are preventative, but its only so preventative in situations like a cheer comp.

Even while just tumbling and not interacting with another person?

Yes. They are used to it. My daughter says fullouts can be a little hard but she’s not complaining much.

By the way when you say covid isn’t going anywhere... you know a vaccine is here right? It will hopefully protect those who take it! I’m watching closely for any weird side effects, but so far it seems safe except for a few allergic reactions. Fingers crossed!

Yeah, we also have to remember that a vaccine is not a cure though. I personally know for multiple reasons me and my family choosing not to resize it any time soon. mainly it is because even if we currently don't see any short term side effects, we have NO IDEA what it might do to your body in the long run. Long term side effects could happen. Plus we got to remember, a vaccine normally takes at least 10 years of work and testing, and we got this one in like 9 months. Makes you wonder what steps they skipped out on. The Vaccine will need to be around for at least 25-50 years before I would trust it enough to receive it. I really hope that it is a great vaccine that will work but I'm not receiving it anytime soon.
PLUS- I am not anti-vaccine. just wanted to put that out there...I mean I hate shots but I respect the fact that they work

I would recommend doing quite a bit more research on the vaccine, including how it was produced so fast. We don't know the long term effects of it, but we don't know the long term effects of the virus either. But based on what we've seen from each so far, the decision was easy for me. I happily received my first dose last Friday.

I'm not gonna argue about it, because we have different opinions surrounding the vaccine. I refuse to be a guinea pig in a government project, with a vaccine that we really know nothing about

I mean this in the nicest way possible. Many of your posts show a very large lack of understanding of the virus and the factors surrounding it, and some of that may come from your family/people around you. With how young you have said you are, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. Just suggesting you do a good amount of research more to gain a better understanding. None of which has to do with opinions.

You can be:

1. Happy there is SOME cheer happening.

WHILE ALSO BEING

2. Concerned for the safety of athletes/regulations/etc.

Those are not mutually exclusive.

You also can:

1. Wish you had a season.

AND

2. Be concerned about health/safety/etc.

You are not a bad person for doing either or both.

I agree with this. You can want a cheer season, while also hoping for some basic safety precautions at competitions. I think hand sanitizer should always be readily available. How much virus spreading could be prevented if people simply cleaned their hands more. All this touching and yanking of dirty masks and then touching your eyes/mouth seems like it might make it even easier for a virus a spread. Who knows at this point. In general though, kids aren't spreading Covid nearly as much as adults. If they want to leave their masks next to the stage while they're performing a 2 min routine, that doesn't seem too risky. As long as they're not strolling around the venue for hours without one on.

People are saying they're sick of the mask debate, but it's something currently affecting sports, so it's appropriate to discuss right now. I don't have strong feelings either way, and oftentimes the people who do have strong feelings have hidden agendas (ie. they like to hate on teams), or they have no idea what doing a high level routine feels like, etc. If you can get through an entire routine with a mask, great, but I don't want to see kids passing out or distracted by a mask because they feel forced to leave it on no matter what.

Some kids do more than others in routines. Obviously nuggeting in the back won't require the same exertion as doing a gazillion things in a routine. Some kids naturally have better stamina/lung function than others. WCSS did their entire routine with masks, but they seemed a bit gassed halfway though. Would they be as gassed without masks? Who knows. Some kids rely on their sight more than others while tumbling. Does the mask affect their vision at all? Are they worried about the mask riding up into their eyes while they're upside down? There are many things to consider. I don't think Varsity (and probably not any high level sport) will ever force teams to compete in masks.

This will be my only actual post with COVID advice.

We debate mask v. no mask all day long.

A huge line of defense against many things = basics. Don't forget:

*washing your hands.
*avoiding the constant face/eye rubbing.
*not sharing your water/drink/pretzel/chips/etc. with your teammates.

Not saying covid is foodborne but it's not a good idea to share a ChickFila Coke with your teammate (beyond covid, so many things spread that way.)

You can mask all day but it's for nothing if you are rubbing your unwashed hands into your eyes after you touch a comp bathroom doorhandle.

OK, ill leave and no longer share my opinions on here.

None of us have a 100 % knowledge of this virus......whether 20 or 60 years old. None of us know how well the vaccine will be down the road. We all hope everything will be better down the road.
