I wasn't really directing that at you, just more in general. And now they really can't put it on Simone's shoulders.

I had been thinking about that during qualifiers. To be fair, I don't really pay attention to Juniors, so I don't know what we have coming, but I wonder what the depth level of Team USA will be after these games (and now I guess during it), because a lot of these girls are going NCAA and while the elite age average is increasing, the feasibility of doing both NCAA and elite doesn't seem realistic (Trinity Thomas tried, but I don't think much came of it?).

I feel like the “Simone vs. Herself, the USA can send the C-Team and still win, etc.” narratives pushed by the media (and sometimes the athletes tbh) added so much unnecessary pressure. I hope Simone is doing okay mentally and I hope the US girls are proud of themselves for winning a silver medal. I hope Tom is fired after Tokyo.

With that being said, I am so proud of ROC for pulling it off! First Olympic team gold!!!!!

For a second I was like....wut? Then I forgot about the men!

My heart breaks for Simone. She wanted to do 2020 and be done. Also Tom should be fired- so many poor choices.

I'm not for or against Tom...but no matter what he did, he was fighting a losing battle. He was tasked with changing an entire culture. We're so used to seeing these girls perform while being mentally, physically, and sexually abused. Does anyone imagine Simone would've been allowed to pull herself from competition for anything less than a broken leg in previous quads?

Simone made a statement after the meet today hoping that the US still loves them. The mental abuse these women have endured for years is still very much evident.

I agree with all of this. I don't love Tom, but I don't think he's the monster people are making him out to be. I do think his team selection was poor, but I'm not sure ANY team could have won in that situation. The reality is, this is a rebuilding year for the USA, not because they don't have plenty of talent but because they're completely changing the way they do everything.

I just feel so sad for Simone.

I feel for Simone and I'm so, so happy and proud of team USA for placing silver. I'm really happy for ROC and GB!!! on gold and bronze.

I hope this means commentators will quit with the "USA could send 3 teams and go 1,2,3" stuff.

I LOVE this. I love girls seeing that it's totally ok to say you are not ok, not matter how "important" it is.

I can't stand Tom. Every time he speaks I hate him more. He has a difficult task with changing the culture, but I really think he's in way over his head. His dealing with the media is just everything I would expect... A white man whining about how unfair everyone is being to him and stomping off in a huff. Barf.

By the way, in case anyone was wondering...if MyK had made the team instead of Grace, USA still finishes 2nd. I took her scores from quals (arguably her best performance), and she only beats Grace on Vault. If she competed today and received the exact same scores (I used her Cheng score for vault since it was the higher of the 2), US is only 0.232 higher than what they actually scored.

Thanks for doing that. I was wondering. Simone's vault really made it impossible to win. It makes me wonder whether the weight of vault scores needs to be reevaluated...

It was over with the vault. The only rotation the US won was beam, and ROC had 2 falls. On vault, ROC outscored US by slightly over 1 pt. Bars, ROC outscored US by almost 1.5. Beam was the first time the US could make up some of the deficit, but even with 2 falls, they only out scored ROC by a little over 1.5. On floor, even if they took the 3 highest scores from quals (which included Simone), they don't beat ROC's floor scores from finals.

My entire day has been spent doing what we in the animal rescue world call “fence fighting” with Twitter trolls over Biles.

Fortunately I’m in good company with all the teenage cheer stans who, while toxic at times, are as effective at slaughtering trolls as all of Twitter’s Kpop/Beyoncé/Taylor stans combined.

IDK a lot about gymnastics. But could the story here be that Simone knew the best the US could do was silver and removed herself from the team because they had a better chance of topping out at silver without her than with her? Like she knew if she kept competing and risking deductions, she’d tank them and pull them even further away from receiving any medal?

There will always be bitter ugly trolls on the internet but I am pleased that the majority of the comments I have seen have been positive and supportive of Biles.

Apparently he declined to speak to media after Team Finals (saw this on social media so take it with a grain of salt). But how ridiculous is it that he opted out of media while Simone went and talked to them.
