My favorite is when someone calls out sick but posts on facebook they're at the mall. YOU'RE FRIENDS WITH YOUR COACH ON FACEBOOK IDIOT.
This one girl on my team always calls out sick for practice to hang out with her boyfriend it drives us crazy

im not gonna lie... im a complete B*+ch when people miss practice for lame excuses. ANDDDDDD i especially hate when people miss practice, and dont tell anyone or dont tell someone until practice is starting, and its even worse when they knew they were going to miss way in advance.

and im very big on not missing practice, and when someone misses practice and tells the coach its for a completely different reason, I will call them out on it in front of the whole team.

its fine if youre priority isnt cheerleading, i know mine is my career... but i made a commitment and love what i do. if you want to miss practice, then just go to open gym to play around or be on a team that doesnt care if you skip

The ONLY valid excuses:
Illness if you're throwing up, can barely move, or extremely contagious - otherwise, come watch practice
Family situations (death, extreme illness, ect.)
School cheer or school events

And if you're missing practice you better talk to someone about what you missed or come early before the next practice to learn stuff

I'm a complete jerk about missing practice and I let everyone know. Like if we're working on formations at practice and my coach says something looks off I tend to make a comment like "Oh well if everyone was here we'd know..."

Just last week we kicked a kid off our team... she did not come to practice for 2 weeks in a row without a message. When she came in, we told her and her dad that she would not be competing in january (only competition this season) but she is still welcome at practices. Her Dad was really really mad and could not understand that we would take his daughter off for missing 2 weeks of practice not too far away from competition. Well - if you wanna see your daughter compete - at least leave some kind of message when your child is sick!
What I really hated when I still cheered was, when people would tell our coach they had to work or were sick and you just saw them at the beach 5 min before practice! Happened quite some time during summer...Oh and then there are the high school kids who ALWAYS have to study during practice time because there is this MAJOR test the next day. Well, get a planner and learn to use your time wisely. I'm going to college, and still manage to show up at every practice even during finals weeks!

Missing kids at practice just drive me CRAZY!

depending what level team you are on, or what area you are from, i dont see School Cheer being a valid excuse. pick one or the other. and when you tryout and make both teams, you need to decide AHEAD of time which is going to be your priority if there are conflicts.

I cant see any level 5 coach letting a kid miss for high school cheer.

Our gym still makes you come to practice if you're sick. But all you do is watch the practice incase any changes were made. This year a girl from our team ditched practice and her excuse was she was watching her friend give birth... (she eventually quit the team because she didn't like us) I still don't know if that excuse was true or not but it made most of us mad because if all of us came to practice like 4 times in a row we could hear our music (very beginning of the year) there are still quite a few problems with everyone showing up. Soo if you lie to your coaches, don't put it on Facebook

How do you handle a situation where a Suzie has to miss practice or even a competition for a legitimate reason, i.e. a death? Is that excused, acceptable, etc.?

For instance, I had to miss a competition for my grandfather's funeral. Of course it was unplanned and it forced my whole team to change the routine around. But, once I resumed practice after the weekend, I never got my spot back. Just wondering if this is normal. I was point dancer and ended up getting moved near the back after the incident. I always felt like I was being punished for an incident that was out of my control. But maybe not I guess, an absence is an absence?

I doubt it was meant as a "punishment". I always explain to my kids that even though your excuse may be legitimate you still run the risk of losing your spot at any point in the routine, especially if its during chereography time or really close to a comp. I never blatantly move anyone but if something needs to change I have to go with whos there at the time.

My gym is pretty well affiliated with a local HS team. Usually their practice ends when ours starts so we have a few late kids to my practice. There are a few games here and there but there but the kids who do both are responsible about getting material for the most part. I'll get texts less than a half hour after practice sometimes asking what they missed or need to know

last season i never missed practice reallly, the only time i missed it was when i had the flu :(
but sadly this season i had to miss few for highschool cheer which im not doing next year cause all star is much more important to me

i LOVE THAT!!!!! if you dont know what youre supposed to be doing and it was already taught, then you make your own arrangements to learn it. the coach shouldnt have to stop practice to reteach someone who isnt responsible.

and if youre going to argue with me... you have to find your own time in school to make up things you missed, teachers dont reteach the whole class. so its the same thing!

at my gym you still have to come and sit and watch if your sick, just not vomiting. We had a problem with absences in the beginning of the season, there was this girl who was new to allstar cheerleading and she missed 3 or 4 practices in one month for stupid reasons: concert, homecoming, birthday etc. When one person in your stunt group is absent its almost pointless for the rest of the group to be there unless there are major changes in other parts of the routine.

I laugh at all these for it shows how committed one truly is.. yesterday we had open for ALL lvl 5 kids ( we havefour lvl 5 teams) maybe 20 kids showed up .. i being one .. i came in with a sore throat and a missing contact.. my right eye is 20/170 (getting worse due to astigmatism).. and i still tumbled... i asked one girl on my team why she wasnt there and she said she had a headache .... really ... like really.. but then the status is .." wow _____ was awesome in imax..".. (idr the movie).. but still really lmao

We have the legit reasons that make a reason excused, but after a certain amount of even excused absenses people either get warned about being kicked off the team or do get kicked off.
i love it, because i would never miss practice unless i HAD to, when im sick, when i had stitches over the summer, when im hurt i always go and watch and if needed mark my spot and stuff

Its not fair for the one person who always misses, even if its excused, to still have all of the privileges of the team that they are constantly hurting

I HATE when school cheer conflicts with an allstar team, especially when the school cheer coach refuses to compromise with an allstar coach. This happened all the time when I cheered. As a school coach, I have vowed to myself never to be as big of a pain in the butt as many high school coaches are to allstar coaches. lol.
If I caught one of my cheerleaders posting on facebook about going to the mall or something when they were "sick" for practice, I would call her mom, notify her that she is staying an hour after the next practice to condition and let me know why she lied to me. Seriously I would have no mercy. lol. Ugh that hasn't even happened to me and it makes me mad!
