I've met so many cheerleaders that I have coached and taught, cheered with and coached with who have thought the world revolves around them. I've met athletes who think if they left the team, it would simply fall apart. I have cheered with athletes who have thought or still think the same thing, and I've also coached with coaches that believe if they left their place of employment or gym, that everyone would follow them or quit. I think most people who think like this are extremely arrogant.

In recognizing these things, I have come to believe over the years that everyone is replaceable. The new person may not be as talented, or even as good, but as long as their attitude was positive and cared more about their team and or company/gym they would be more of an asset.

I'm a firm believer that anyone can be replaced if need be. Specifically if this person believes the team will fail without them, or that they are irreplaceable. What are your thoughts?

well it depends on what replacement you settle on. If you loose a girl on a senior 5 team and the only girl you can get is from a senior 2 team that might end up hurting the team if they dont have strong skills. I also hate when a person thinks that they are the glue that holds the team together. If that one really good stunter or tumbler or jumper etc, is holding the team together then there was a problem in the first place because one person usually doesnt decide on how talented a team is.

Never experienced that in my cp's (limited) cheer career, but as a soccer coach? Yep, seen it more than once.

And I can tell you that more often than not that if that "star" leaves, not only does the team not fall apart, they often end up being better in the long run.

What are you talking about? I am the glue that holds the whole industry together
i'm sorry but, that position is already fulfilled by me! ;)

on a more serious note,
yes i do believe everyone on a team is replaceable. for example, my flyer decided to not show up for two weeks straight with no notice, and a flyer from juniors was pulled up and competed at that weekends comp with us. yeah, some may think they're all that and irreplaceable, but in reality if you choose the right person to replace them (if that makes sense aha) they are

I couldn't agree more! Those who actually care about the team make it even that much more enjoyable to be with, rather than those who think they entire place would crumble without them.

I dont think an athletes skills can be irreplaceable, but Ive been on teams where one person (Once it was someone who couldnt tumble or stunt all that well) held everything together. It wasnt through fault of the coaches or anything. But when we were down and out, she would say something and BAM, everyone is fighting for stunts like you wouldnt believe.

Shed go to tumbling and talk to someone with a mental block for a while and BOOM, guess who's fulling again?!

The worst (best?) part, she didnt even realize. She just did it. When I told her she was the only thing keeping us pushing forward sometimes, she looked at me like I was crazy. Like I was lieing to her to make her feel better because Im her friend.

The girls who *think* they are the most crucial part of a gym never are, the girls who threaten and plot arent either. But there are athletes who are integral. And they often get *far* to little credit:)

Ily babe:)

Flavin???

When you have a smaller, very talented team not everyone is replaceable. You can't find someone from another team that could fill specialized places without hurting the team in the long run. I've seen on teams where they never compete with the same team at any competition because everything is changed and alternates are put in. They were still just as good. But if you took away one person from team made up of very talented tumblers and stunters there really aren't many options for replacing those athletes. It's not like you have an arsenal of very talented people who aren't already on a team. I know that they could double-team or even swith teams but to get the fullest potential of every athlete they need to be on one team and I am against changing a persons team mid-season. Thats just my opinion though. :)

I agree that anyone is replaceable. Things may not be exactly the same if you do replace someone but you can always replace someone if you need to. Every year, no matter what team i was on, i always heard that no one was irreplaceable, especially coming from a gym where they had a lot of kids. I think it made people work hard all season and not get too comfortable with their skills. They were always working. And as i continue with cheer throughout my life whither it be coaching or actually competing, im going to continue thinking like this.

coming from a personal experience, i have been replaced on TWO teams. the coach i had seriously , legit told me, 'youve been replaced'.

My original program had closed and so a different gym welcomed the girls from my old gym to join theirs ,when i went to the tryouts, i got an email back saying that they wanted me to double team! i was unbelieveably excited. so i began the 4hour, three times a week practices, alll.summer. and about three months ago, i felt that at practice something was fishy, something didnt seem right, i was put in positions that ive never been in before, and there was another girl taking my spot for my stunts, i just didnt understand it . then at the end of the practice i was told i was replaced. being a dedicated athlete, and being forced to practices when i was so sick i couldnt get out of bed, i was replaced. and honestly , i never acted like i held the team together, i mean yes i had confidence, but im not conceeded. [spelling] the reason why i was replaced is unbelieveable, money. now yes i do understand that there arre certain days things have to be paid by , dont get me wrong. but as you all know the economy isnt so strong right now and some of you may have had the same , or close to the same problem- but i strongly believe that if you have a busniess, you shouldnt base an athletes position in a sport by wether or not theyre paying you on time, you should want to work with the customer, but if you find replacing someone who was on TWO of your teams the right thing to do, so be it, not my loss[;

I agree 100%. Everyone is replacable. From experience cheering high school/all star/coaching I've dealt with a lot of people thinking they were the cheer gods gift to my team. And for whatever reason, when they left the team we ended up better off without them (sounds kind of harsh, but didn't know how else to say it). True, the person that comes in as a replacement may have a smaller/less advanced skill set, but that person can help the team in different ways.

Cheer Gyms are businesses first and foremost. If you are not paying your bills on time - they have every right to replace you. They have bills to pay too. The coaches have to be paid, gas and electric , water, rent, etc.

yeah well so does my family

You're both right. Cheer gyms are a business, and if nobody paid their bills on time the gym wouldn't be *in* business. And there is a responsibility on the party of a family that puts their child on an all-star cheer team to live up to their financial obligations.

But I am a huge proponent of youth sports. And I strongly believe that everyone who wants to participate in a youth sport should be permitted to do so, regardless of their ability to pay. I am always sad when I hear someone has to give up an activity or sport due to financial considerations.

In a perfect world, the gym should be working with families in financial difficulty to keep athletes in the program. But I also recognize that the cost of subsidizing even one athlete is prohibitive and may not be within a gym's means. So that's why I love things like the United Way Connecting Kids program, which offer grants to families who otherwise couldn't afford to get their kids into activities. I did a google search and it looked like USASF at one point had a "young athlete" scholarship program but had to discontinue it, which is a shame. Depending on where one lives there might be other community-based resources as well.
