I was just accepted to UT Austin and am interested in cheering there. However, I do not know much about the cheer program. Does anyone have any info on the cheer program or the school in general? Are there any good all star programs with level 5 teams around there?I have never done spirit cheer and am not ready to give up competing. I am also a Cali girl who would be new to the whole southern thing....not sure how that would work out. Hahaha thanks any info will help!!

Hi Pat Congrats on your UT Austin acceptance. My daughter is a 3rd year on Stephen F Austin lg Coed..and a Cali Girl! She loves it in Texas! We love the southern hospitality...and I LOVE the manners!

You only need an invitation to tryout for coed (Orange squad) by sending in a video (Due APRIL 1st) and then you are asked to come to a clinic for potential invitations. All girl (white squad) is an open tryout. I suggest you look here asap for tryout procedures! http://www.utexas.edu/athletics/cheer/tryouts/index.php?category=cheer
UT Austin has a coed and an all girl team for cheering at games, but do not compete (at least not recently). Both teams are very good though and it'll be competitive at tryouts for sure. They take a good number of people though which is good! My co-captain in high school made it to the all girl team with a solid standing back and a ro bhs layout 2-3 years ago, but also had pretty jumps and the collegiate look. I think that's about the average though, with a good chunk throwing fulls, especially for coed. As far as allstar gyms, your best bet would probably be Austin Cheer Factory or Cheer Station. Both are on the north side of the city about 12 miles away and vary from year to year in level 5 teams and divisions.
As for the southern thing, trust me you will love it <3 I moved to Texas from southern cali in 6th grade and I am very glad I did! People are very friendly down here and Austin is a neat area in general. Lots of restaurants and music stuff. Also if you want to get out of Austin, you're only an hour drive from the Alamo and the riverwalk, 30-45 min from schlitterbaughn(largest waterpark in the country) , you can float the river down there(super fun!), and are right by Lake Travis.

Hi, I was also admitted and I'm trying out for all girl in a couple weeks. All my forms and recommendations have been sent, but I was wondering if anyone knew the tumbling standard I need to be at. I have my full and a specialty through to full on the spring floor, but the most I've done on the hard mat is through to a layout. Do I need to get my full on the hard mat before tryouts?
