I will start it.

When you are trying to 'sell' something to someone you have to choose the best way to sell it. If I wanted to sell my mom a car I would advertise it completely differently than I would to my younger sister. My mom wants something safe, comfortable, and gets good gas mileage. My sister wants something younger, faster, better stereo, and all the hip young gadgets out there (woohoo I said something was hip).

But in the end they BOTH want a car and I am selling them a car.

Who was this show made to sell to? I believe the lay person. Where when I watch Cheerleading Worlds I feel that show is being sold to us (the cheer nerds) the special on CNN was to inform and raise the level of awareness of cheerleading to non-cheer people. CNN chose their audience and sold it to them appropriately. A central character is the easiest for the audience to follow. A point flyer will, to the lay person, make sense to be the team's quarterback. Talking to non-cheer person they came away with a very favorable image about cheer and Maddie. I did get asked if one person makes that much a difference in a team. On the point that cheer is VERY much a team sport I think CNN failed a bit, and thats where people are frustrated. In fact this segment as a whole was so positive and so well done it almost made it worse they didn't show off our world even better (you can tell everyone is hungry for it). but that would have made it a harder to follow story. When they showed CEA was in third after hitting perfect would it have been important to the story to express the loophole in the scoresheets that gave all this emphasis to tumbling and that if everyone hit SE really had no chance? No.. it didn't help the story or the point to be conveyed (cheer is a sport). BUT in 20 minutes they overall did a very good job. I didn't end it feeling sick to my stomach, and actually wished there were 20 minute segments on individuals and teams across the country OR a reality show about it that doesn't make everyone look insane. Thoughts?

I have three observations from this piece.
#1 I dont think spotters should assist stunts. For that matter they shouldn't even be there
#2 Why did her bases drop her/she jump out of the extension at the end of the routine. Not good for a bum knee.

#3 MOST IMPORTANT No matter the type of show, people within the cheerleading community come out in droves to bash the show. I really don't get it. This show did a fine job of portraying the "thrill of victory and the agony of defeat" angle through one individual on a team. The average person most likely came away with a more athletic appreciation of competition cheerleading. Isn't that what every girl that wears a "if cheerleading were any easier it would be called football" t-shirt wants?
They could have focused on how many injuries there are and how little 6 year olds put on too much make up or how teenage girls wear skimpy uniforms etc.

I totally agree with number #3! You would think that more people in the cheer world would be excited to have the sport we all love portrayed in a positive light on a national forum, instead the haters have come out to play again....great!!:banghead:

i totally agree on this point. i think that our society has to have a 'star' on every team...michael jordon, tom brady, shaq, kobe, david beckman...the list goes on and on. these people aren't the whole team, but the most 'visible'. however, if tom brady gets hurt, they just put in #2 and keep going. if the point flyer gets hurt, that's 3 other people on the team that are affected. if susie decides she wants to go to a pool party instead of practice, that affects the entire stunt group and possibly the whole team.

I think cheerleading is one of the most, if not the most TEAM sports there is. everyone counts, everyone matters, especially at the elite level (no disrepect to L1-4 at all here) it's not like football where you have 30 team members and only 12 play (or whatever, you get my point) all 36 play a role....if you don't have the bases, the flyer doesn't fly.

I wonder who approved the final product?

I posted in the other thread, but the thing that bothers me the most about this is that Maddie is a kid.... Still in high school and just a kid. She may have wonderful poise and a fantastic attitude but people (many other kids, but adults as well) are trashing this young woman, who is having to read all these things

She may have wonderful poise and a fantastic attitude and seem much older then she is, but people (many other kids, but adults as well) are trashing this young woman, who is having to read all these things and it is likely breaking her heart. All for something beyond her control. I wish these people would think about how it would feel if they were being spoken about like Maddie is. So saddening.

As for the CNN piece, I thought it was great. I really was left wanting more but was very satisfied, and I think ALL of CEA and the Gardner family should be very proud!

If i was someone who had never cheered before i'd probably end up looking at allstar cheerleading in a different way seeing how athletic it is and not really have payed attention to the girl as much as the other things going on and as what she's saying.

I completely agree that a lot of people are upset that they focused on the individual, but Kingston does have a point that focusing on one individual makes an easier story to follow; however, I think a lot of people also expected it to be about SSX and Mikayla....a team and a young lady who deserve to be taken out of SE and Maddie's shadow...when it was the same ol' same ol' they were a little upset.
At the same time CNN knows very little about the cheerleading world and when they researched it they probably came across Maddie A LOT. They found the easiest story and told the world. Can we fault them for that when we're the ones who made her a cheerlebrity???
I'm rather indifferent towards Maddie, but if you don't like her then don't say anything about her, don't "shimmy" or "like" anything (positive or negative) about her, don't watch videos about her, don't buy magazines with her on the cover, don't do anything involving her. Everytime you say something either good or bad about her that is just another link that pops up on Google when you type her name in....making her that much more accessible for the next news group to find her. If we want someone else to be seen by the noncheerleading world then we have to work to make someone else as big a cheerlebrity as Maddie.

#1 when the interviewer asks what it means to YOU, the interviewee answers with I.
#2 Everyone on this very message board calls her the team star. Everyone refers to "Maddie's stunt" etc. Also, I have heard more times than I care to remember: "Maddie, why must you be so fierce?" It's the CEA fans that put her on a pedestal.

The producers of CNN Presents after the peice was given to them in multiple formats by the documentary team producer with no input from anyone else. Their network, their program, their presentation.

The cheer world is mostly upset it focused on Maddie because we're used to everything being about Maddie, however the outside world, to the few people who watched it that were interested, it made it interesting. Personally, I don't really care for Maddie that much, and when I first watched it, I got annoyed that it was following her, because I am used to everything always being about Maddie, but other people aren't. There is no other girl on that team as famous as Maddie to follow, and even if there was, there was no other girl that did what she did at Worlds. Her story, for Worlds at least, was the most interesting. Had they had the choice (which I am not sure they did) of ANY cheer gym in the country, with any cheerleader, I would be annoyed had they chosen Maddie, there are better athletes to follow, however seeing as they probably only had the option of following CEA, Maddie was the right choice. I wouldn't want to watch Erica hit everything and have no drama to the show.
