What are some of the best Cheer camps? Ideas or thoughts on Woodward, CheerSurge or any others. Were they more just for fun or did you considerably improve your skills there. Any weekend camps that are good?

woodward is a great camp! its not very strict though, so your skills can either REALLY improve, or they may just stay the same to as when you come. woodward is all about how hard YOU work and how much effort you put into it. no one will make you better at woodward unless you ask for help and work for it yourself. my experience at woodward was a very rewarding one, mostly because im a very driven person, and i have a real passion for cheerleading. i personally saw a big improvment in my skills at this camp

couldn't have said it better. :)

it's an amazing camp i always get a lot out of it so i would definitely recommend it but it's for people who are serious about it. if you're not one to push yourself & go to the open gyms or ask for help don't go home & ask why you didn't improve.

Thanks guys! Anyone have experience with Cheersurge?

I work at Woodward and it is an incredibly rewarding experience. I have had a great time and every time I go I am surprised by how many new skills I see. The environment is infectious and the kids are in the gym all the time by their own choice. I highly recommend it.

Camp Woodward has their 2012 dates and rates on their website now. I am sending my daughter back for 2 weeks as she only went for 1 week last summer and has asked to stay 2 weeks this summer. She was 8 last year and her first time ever going to camp so we only sent her for 1 week not knowing if she would be home sick or not. She loved it!

A know a couple girls who went to Cheer Surge and said they had fun. My personal opinion, I think it looks more like a camp of more play than gaining skills. The girls parents also stayed at the hotel. We have stayed at the Nick Hotel many time and although Nick Hotel is just 45 mintues from our house, my personal opinion is I wouldn't want my daughter there without me supervising her as the place is a mad house with kids running and screaming everywhere. They did do non-cheer related things like going to Universal Studios, etc. Living so close, I am not ineterested in sending my daughter to a theme park that we have been to multiple times already. I think all the non-cheer activities just increased the overall price. If they offered Cheer Surge at another location, I may consider it. I think a beach resort would be cool. I guess I am biased since the "appeal" of Orlando is not appealing to me as a local, but for a non-Florida resident may like doing all the non-cheer stuff in Orlando.

Last year was Cheersurge's first year, but they took a lot of feedback, so I don't know how different it is going to be this year, but I can tell you what it was like last year.

Last year, the camp was almost all allstar cheerleaders, but it seemed slightly geared more towards school/rec cheerleaders. The girls practiced at a convention center on mats, not spring floor (you would have to contact them to see if this has changed this year). All of the girls were taught a couple sideline cheers, regardless if they were allstars or not (again, this may have changed). They had the girls all do the same approach for jumps, even if their own teams was different. They also had every girl participate in a mandatory mock try-out, which consisted of a cheer, jumps, and tumbling. As for the tumbling instruction, it was difficult for many girls to tumble because of the spring floor. For stunting, the girls were split up into stunt groups that seemed to be by ability. It didn't seem like anyone was really being held back when it came to stunting. The boy coaches offered to co-ed stunt with all of the girls and they all loved it. I know this year they have a form you have to fill out before you come to camp with the stunting/tumbling skills you have/almost have. This is new. There was also optional private lessons one morning. Each girl was asked what they wanted to work on, and if they had a specific coach they wanted to work with, and had 1 or more half-hour privates.

As for the fun part, the camp was super fun. I feel like it was more focused on fun then improving skills. A lot of time was spent at the pools at the Nick Hotel. One night, everyone went to Planet Hollywood for dinner, then Downtown Disney after. Another day, almost the whole day was spent at Universal's Islands of Adventure. The girls were split up there by who likes rides and who doesn't so everyone was happy. Everyone got slimed in the mass sliming, as well as the individual group sliming. Everyone also went to see a show at the hotel one night, and had breakfast at the Nicktoons cafe one morning. There were also the little things, like snacks brought to our rooms, or nachos in the director's room, and breakfast in bed.

As for safety, all of the rooms in the hotel conjoin with another room. Everyone was on the same floor, and all the rooms were next to each other, with the directors on one end and coaches on the other. They younger girls' room conjoined with the girl coaches' room. Nobody, even the high schoolers, were given room keys, and you were allowed to leave your room unless you were told to. The male coaches were allowed to even set foot in any of the rooms besides the directors and their own. The coaches and directors walked past the rooms at night.

Overall, the camp was more sun than skills, but it really was a ton of fun. They got a lot of feedback from the campers, so I think it will be improved this year. As for things such as the spring floor issue, I would email them.

PS @angelndscz who do you know that went there?

I totally agree about woodward, if you want to go and work on a few skills but mostly have fun, then you can, because the recreation activites are amazing, but if you really want to focus on the training, then you can do that too, and still have a really great time tbh.
I went for the first time this year and it was a total dream come true, it was literally one of the best weeks of my life. the coaches have so much knowledge and know how to explain things in a way that really makes sense. Also, because you decide what to do with your day, if you feel like your body needs a rest from all the tumbling, then you can chill out for a bit, or if you really feel like your making progress with skills can cant wait to work on them again, you can spend 7 hours in the gym each day :) Its a tough week, which is both mentally and physically exhausting, and the camp may be slightly better suited to older athletes (11+) but at the same time it is so much fun.

I really cant explain how much I loved this summer, and how much I gained from woodward, and I will be forever thankful to my parents for letting me go, and the coaches who worked with me for what they taught me :)
