I posted this somewhere else.. Lol but

My Best friend tore his ACL, MCL, and PCL (?) in a football game in September. So he went to his doctor and they told him he needed surgery and his football season was over. He had already tore it before and had surgery. However, He refused to have surgery at that time so his appt was scheduled for dec7 (which would of been a few days after the state championship) because he wanted to play. So he braced it for like the next 6 games and was able to come back and play all 4 playoff games. Well he went in on dec 7 and they told him it had all grown back and healed.. Which was a surprise to everyone.

I posted this somewhere else too but I partially tore my acl by landing with my knees locked out in a full and I went back to soon without letting it heal and just stepped out of a stunt which wouldn't have normally done anything and tore everything my acl, mcl, and lcl. I also know a girl though who tore her acl just doing a dance.

Who has injured their acl and pcl but not enough to require surgery, and what brace do you now wear to protect your knee? Anyone wear donjoy brand and if so which one and what do you think of it?

I wear donjoy brand now but I had surgery 6 months ago but I also wore it before my surgery for a couple months and don't really care for it!

I too tore my mcl , medial meniscus, and partially my acl last season around this time. I didnt get surgery and most of my tears grew back.

I partially tore my acl and strained my pcl last season and didnt get surgery. I did a lot of PT and conditioned my knee a lot. I opted out of wearing a brace and like i said before just worked it out. I still am tumbling at level 5 and do not require a brace because of all of the strengthening I do. Braces while good in short term can be bad for you to a certain extent in the long run because your body gets use to it and the muscles get weak so you end up being dependent on the brace instead of just needing it for a little while.

I've had knee problems for years and I never got an MRI or had surgery! I had/have pain around my ACL and my Tendon! Surgery is great if it works.... I have a friend who tore everything in her knee doing a roundoff (crazy right?) she's had 3 surgeries since because her knee won't fully heal and it tears again (she doesn't tumble on it) just the surgeries haven't worked.... I consider myself a pro when it comes to handling knee pain because I do it on a daily basis! I see my physical therapist 2 times a week and I'm still able to tumble... maybe not to the best of my ability mainly because I get scared of my knee but I'm still tumbling level 5... Certain tumbling skills hurt my knee the most (standing handsprings to tucks/layouts) idk why but when i land my knee will sting with pain for a good 30 seconds and sometimes swell up that night... and theres a certain spot around my ACL where if you put pressure on it it hurts! I tape my tendon when I'm practicing because if I don't I get this weird loose knee feeling (can't really explain) and my knee wont feel stable! Everyone has a different story but i believe that if you hurt something ankle/knee if you CAN walk on it you don't need surgery you just need rest and some physical therapy. Whenever I rehurt it I'm in bed for a good 4 days on ibuprofen and icing it constantly and it has always cleared up enough for me to start tumbling again! I already know I'm going to have major knee problems when I'm older (my PT tells me all the time) but I love cheer too much.... :)

what model do you have?
I have a custom made Female Force OTS. The only reason I didn't care for it is because I got it made way before I knew I was going to have surgery or what was going to happen with my knee so it doesn't have the full support I would like all around as other braces like the front is completely open where I need something different now going back so early. After I tore my knee the doctor knew I wanted to get back to cheering my senior year asap so I was just in physical therapy multiple times every week hoping surgery wouldn't be necessary and it would just eventually be okay to get back on. But after we waited a couple months and visiting different doctors even though i wasn't doing anything cheer related it got so bad and my meniscus was so thin that I was told I needed to get surgery right away or I would never be able to return back to any physical activity:(

I have two donjoy's. They both work great. Pay attention when they teach you how to use the straps! One time I tangled mine up so bad it took 3 therapists to figure out how to fix it. It takes a little getting used to tumbling with it, just because your leg feels a little heavier, but I promise its mental. When its time to take it off your leg will feel naked!

Has anyone recovered from ACL reconstruction and not needed a brace when tumbling? My daughter had surgery in September she was only in a brace for 3 weeks after surgery. Another girl at her gym tore her ACL and she went from the brace that you initially wear after surgery to a donjoy brace. My daughter's doctor told her at 6 months (April) when she is released to start doing level 5 skills again she will not need a brace. I talk to her PT and he said that most athletes initially wear braces but more from a mental aspect. Braces do not protect from the force of a landing, fall or blow, etc that will cause injury to an ACL.

My daughter does not want to wear a brace because she feels it make her leg weaker. She broke her right ankle 4 years ago and had to undergo surgery where screws were inserted and she has always worn a ankle brace. Since her ACL injury she does not wear the brace during PT and has discovered that her right ankle with the screws is much weaker than left.

I tore both of mine by hyper extention. No twisting whatsoever. So I don't beleive it is a level 5 thing. I can still hear the 10 year old in the surgery room next to me talking about tearing it playing basketball because he landed a jump with his knees hyper extended.

That's exactly how I tore mine, hyperextending my knee landing a jump shot.

I don't know about tumbling, but I had my ACL reconstrution back in 2000 (using a patellar tendon graft) and do not wear a brace. I was 21 at the time of the surgery and am 33 now. I am still very active (play softball 2/3 of the year, run regularly, chase after a 7-year-old). I wore my Donjoy brace at first, but then about 2 years later, lost 80 pounds and never had my brace resized. I have never had any major issues, but I recognize that I am taking a risk by not wearing a brace. I have had a few close calls where I was like, "Oh great, just blew out my knee again," but have not actually injured it seriously again. And that's after almost 12 years.

One thing I will mention though, I have severe arthritis in the knee that I had the ACL reconstruction on. I don't know if it is related in any way to not having worn a brace over the years, but it is worth mentioning. A radiologist looked at an x-ray of my knee over the summer and did not believe that it wasn't the knee of someone over the age of 60. I'm already a knee replacement candidate, but it's not like it slows me down or I take it easy or anything...

my doc told me i didnt need a brace and that it was all mental. i wore it for a month, decided to trust him and take it off, then retore my acl 4 practices later... now im thinking about trying to just skip surgery and wear a brace, but ive never heard of a lvl 5 cheering without an acl, anybody know of this?

This just made me cringe, I know that this will probably be what I have to look forward later on in life =/
