Its a new season of high school cheer and the one thing i love about high school cheer is the cheer camp it is the best thing around it is suppose to bring the team together....Now here is the problem....

A Girl on my team can not afford to go and I am trying to figure out ways to get her to camp...we just cant leave one teammate behind that is TOTALLY NOT FAIR....but as im working hard it is brought to my attention that 2 girls are not going because they did not enjoy it last year

NOW my question is...how would you as a coach/athlete feel about this because personally i feel like got slapped in the face because we have one young lady DYING to be there and 2 girls who seem like they are just in it for the uniform i dont know if it helps the case but they're all in one stunt group and if those two girls really dont go that means their flyer and front spot have no reason of going either

and at my school we cant afford to loose one stunt group

***side note*** we prepare all summer (camp is at the end of July) for camp to be ready to grow as a sport and not just work on the basics so how can we grow if not everyone is there you know.... your comments and opinions are greatly appreciated ahead of time THANKS

I understand completely why you feel the way you do. As for the girl who can't afford it, there are plenty of fundraising ideas you could all use to help with the cost. And those girls that aren't going because they didn't like it - why do they even have a choice?

It's difficult, because as a school team you can't require a $250 camp of the girls. It's tough, because camp is such an important experience for the team. Not only in the instruction they receive, but in the bonding that takes place.
For the girl who can't afford it, talk to your school's Athletic Director or Principal. They may be aware of school funds that help offset extra costs for kids who can't afford it. If the school doesn't have something like that, or the funds are only for academic trips, they may be aware of an organization in the community that offers camperships to kids.

Camp is mandatory! there are no options. I do understand someone not being able to afford it and hopefully there is some fundraising that can be dedicated to camp that can cover such expenses. As for the girls that do not want to go, they should not be part of the TEAM.......this is a team, not an individual sport....so go to camp or be off the TEAM....Together Everyone Acheive More

For us it is mandatory as well. If you don't go to camp, you're not on the team. Simple as that. Yes it's expensive, but it's laid out before you even tryout for the team. There can be plenty of time, planning, and payment options, especially if it's at the end of the summer.

As for the girl that can't, ask a business to donate some money. Even if you just get 5 smaller business to donate $50 each, that should be a good amount to either almost cover the costs or pay for it entirely. Then I would let the other girls know that they are replaceable and give them a choice to be apart of the team or not.

I have a situation this year where an incoming freshmen tried out and she just moved her from across the county. Prior to her trying out for high school cheerleading, her mom called me to discuss that they have already planned on going back to where they moved from in August so she will not be at camp. While I want her to be at camp, there is not much I can do. Her mom already said if she makes the team in the future, it wouldn't be a problem to change their "vacation" if they even go.

I had to say OK. They told me ahead of time and she made the team fair and square. While I feel this may put her a little behind, I needed to respect it.

Last year at our camp, around 4-5 of our girls didn't go.
Some didn't turn the money in on time, others had jobs, vacations etc.

It's simple at my school, if you don't pay the money on time you don't go. But in your case I understand that it is difficult for some people to afford it.

Although camp is mandatory, there are exceptions.

At my school camp is mandatory unless you have a previously planned vacation. Normally our coach lets us know around January when we're going to camp so no one schedules their vacation for those days

I agree with your decision. There is an exception to every rule and there are circumstances such as the one you indicated for which such an exception may be necessary.

On the flip side, they have been told August 13, August 13, August 13 is the start to requied practices.. I get an email from a JV flyer's mom... we are away until the 17th but she will be going to camp. Um, be prepared to be behind!

cheer camp is MANDATORY. its a good way to build the team and initialize team bonding. and if its not till july you have time to fundraise money for y'all ot get to cheer camp. I couldn't imagine not having any kids on a team at cheer camp

..I don't like cheer camp. Never did. I didn't feel the need to work on stunts we could already do...while standing in SC heat...facing a pool...with the beach behind us. That was just cruel and inhumane.... But I do feel that it should either be entirely optional or entirely mandatory. No in between. If its mandatory, the girls that simply don't like it should have to deal and go.

As for the girl that can't afford it....do yall not fundraise? Is your district "pay to play"? Contact the AD, I'm sure getting her there isn't entirely impossible.

.....my sister's high school team isn't going to a camp this year, but rather having choreo at the beach.

I agree with some of the above posters. All the teams I have ever coached in All Star or School teams from elementary to HS, camp was mandatory so those two girls who didn't like it would not have been on any of my teams. As far as the girls that can't afford it? There has to be some options for them like asking the whole team to help out or fund raising? I really hope it works out for them. they seem to love EVERY part of cheer not just selective ones!! Good Luck with everything. :)
