On Tumblr I've noticed this serious increase of Color Guard vs Cheerleading... it's gotten pretty intense.
Where the heck did all of this vicious hatred come from? haha
I don't understand all the hate.
Would anyone be so kind as to explain this to me? Has this been a long-term thing that I just haven't noticed?

I'm going to post some examples I've found to further my point xD

When I was in high school, the tryout dates for cheer were earliest in the semester, followed by drill team (dance) and then finally colorguard. Therefore we would have some girls tryout for cheer, not make it and then tryout for drill team, not make it and then end up on colorguard (they didn't really cut people). As a result, one or two girls would have bitter feelings towards cheer or dance, etc. but the majority of all 3 teams didn't think like that. On a whole, everyone was friends and respected each other.

I'm really not familiar with schools that have a prominent guard. Ours is a part of the marching band who are awesome and win like, everything, so I think that helps the situation. Because they're not really under the heading of athletics, there really isn't controversy or hard feeling because it's like apples and fishsticks.

I think a lot of it has to do with schools that still foster that cheerleader stereotype, especially small town schools where football is God. I can understand why the color guard might feel a little overshadowed by the cheerleading squad. I also think a lot of it comes from kids who don't know how to handle disappointment, they didn't make the cheering squad, they're on color guard feeling like a second class citizen, so they lash out using the stereotypes that always work (cheerleading is for stupid, slutty, preps) to make themselves feel better, instead of actually working to fix the problem.

Our color guard basically doesn't exist. Girls from the band voluneteer to do it for marching and parades but its usually only like three girls. This year no one volunteered and we (the band) no longer marches at football games, we focus on concerts. And that's how the color guard died at MFHS.

Our color guard was part of the band. I was friends with some of them because I was a music person. There really wasn't any trouble.

However in college, my sister was a majorette who is also part of the band. Their color guard HATED the majorettes and the captain was set out on taking every privilege away from them that they could. Now the majorettes are like one of the best in the SEC and the try out process is absolutely crazy, where the color guard, well I am pretty sure they didnt even cut anyone the year in question. The captain was just jealous because people gave the majorettes so much stuff and they were featured in pregame and their names were called out. But they worked really hard for their spots and had to beat out tons of girls for that spot so they should be recognized. Well her senior year they had all that taken away because the guard captain was claiming it was unfair. It was ridiculous. But whats done is done. The majorettes were till praised by the university and still got benefits from people outside of the band department.

I just don't get why *color guard* is the rivalry- and not the dance/gymnastics teams/ any other non-contact sport haha

Well that rivalry is there too. In terms of high school, I think it depends. There's a slight rivalry between us and dance team but its more of a friendly nature. But dance and cheer are pretty important and recognized often where as color guard and gymnastics are low key at my school. I imagine at other schools it can be reversed where as gymnastics is the big sport and cheer is second class. It just depends on how the school perceives each sport.

Now in terms of the online and tumblr 'world' its probably just jealousy... I do find it random though. I feel like color guard and cheer are two completely different things...
