At worlds in 2011, for the first time ever, I came off the floor and my mom had a paper with notes about the other teams in the division and how we stacked up to them. I loved it, because my mom usually hates everything to do with cheerleading. I started tearing up with she showed me because she was SO excited about what she did for me (and it was my last competition...so I was already an emotional train wreck). but it was the most my mom has done for me as far as supporting my cheerleading career and it was definitely something special to me.

My mom would always try to write notes on the line up sheet about how each team did for the teams that we we're able to see. I loved it haha

Loved when my mom would do this for me. Especially since she would put honest feed back on how not only they did and how we did, even if we had done bad. She usually tried to rank the teams then in order of how she thought we all compared. I love it.

At NCA College Nationals (and All-Star Nationals) they post your scores shortly after you perform. I used to see tons of moms with their little lists of scores figuring out if their kid was moving on to finals. I always wished my parents would have just made the trip to Florida, never mind sitting in the stands keeping track of scores.

Back in the day my mom wrote notes, bobbles, not together, or very sharp and together stunts looked hard, etc... But honestly, I think it was b/c she was bored and I would yell at her if I didn't get an accurate picture of how we did.. she hated cheer and still hates cheer. Now I coach and I think she hates it more.

I was shocked that she did that. I totally get wishing your parents were at competitions...My dad came to maybe 5 or 6 in the 6 years that I cheered. And my mom came to maybe 12. I would BEG her to come to them, but part of the "agreement" when I went back to cheering was that she wouldn't have to go and sit through them. They only came when it was at a beach or somewhere fun. haha

My mom alway wrote things like blank team dropped 3 stunts, or sloppy, bad jumps, tight motions or whatever and then she would rank where she thought we had placed. She also video tapped all the teams in my divison so I could watch and see how I thought we lined up :)

Thats so sad to hear that parent dont go to support their children- I dont watch football on tv- but watch every single game my son plays in. In the 12+ years my daughters competed I missed 1 competition for my older daughter because my younger daughter had a very important competition on the same day- And I coached that team. When my older daughters team competed I was put on speaker phone and cried the entire time because I wasnt there. Im sorry for the kids whos parents CHOOSE not to go time goes so fast and this is time you missed with your child.

I always encourage parents to read and understand the scoresheets. The percentages make a big difference and can usually explain why a team is not in first place even though they "hit" their routine (many times not clean, but all the stunts went up). That's one of the more common emotional complaints.

Sorry for any of you who's parents would not go to competitions. I couldn't imagine ever missing one unless I was deployed. Now I try to make sure and make all of my sons soccer games and it makes me sad that I can't watch Megan cheer each week in college.

Okay, über nerd alert. I printed the scoring grid for each competition, made my own judging grids that would fit two to a page with the appropriate deduction numbers etc. so I could hash mark as I watched, had my own shorthand for what stunts, jumps, judged the varsity 0.1-1.0 technique category. It gave me something to do..I'm far too analytical for my own good.

The thing of it is....I actually ended up being pretty good at it! By the end of the season I was not only getting ours in the right positions, but usuually got the whole division in the right order. I was best on a varsity scoresheet. The jury is out on whether my kids liked it. There were times where I'd missed some quirky thing..especially on universal spirits whacked out score sheet, where I thought they did better than they did and that could get upsetting. I totally missed their "all passes end in layout" in order to score as a "level 4" pass they had to end in layout. So our junior four that threw 8 bhs, whip, bhs bhs tuck didn't count as a level four pass and we got no points for that section of the sheet.

You know....cause whips aren't level four or anything.

But to answer your question, I haven't seen the new grids yet and I've been looking. Just the other day I was looking for CHEERSPORT's new grid and I haven't seen it yet. Not sure if I'll go to all that trouble this year (last season I scored every team in every division our gym had a team in) I know I won't be doing all that because it was like "working" at a competition and im not doing that anymore, but I'll probably not be able to NOT score my kids divisions. I just like some explanation for placements (good or bad) and I can usually get it from my own watching and notes and be able to explain things to my kids.

I agree! I was lucky to never miss even one of my girls' competitions. Even with 2 of them on 3 teams I managed to never miss a performance (thank you EPs for timing that so nicely for 4 years!). It makes me sad when I read this. My dad never came to any of my things growing up (gymnastics, ballet, field hockey, volleyball - so he had plenty to choose from!). Never. Not one. So I had to just get rides with other kids. It stayed with me forever.

I wish parents would understand. I don't go because I love cheer (or dance or field hockey or whatever it is that week). I go because I love MY KIDS! I never understand people who don't go to comps and say "well I hate cheerleading" - um... no one asked you that. If you can't go (work etc) that's one thing. But to just never go because you don't want to? :(

I was totally that mom taking notes and tracking all the teams and making predictions. I'm volunteering at cp's dance school's competitions now so I can figure out their scoring so when she starts competing I can keep score again! :D
