I just had to. Was at a really large local competition yesterday. We do UCA style cheer and was one of the only programs at this competition that did. Everyone else was NCA/AS type cheer. But I ask the question because every other team, even down to the Pee wees were doing basket tosses....I am sitting in the audience like what in the world is going on? Still trying to figure out what regs these teams are following? Because I am thinking even AS at these lower levels tosses are illegal.
On the other note, there were some amaizing Senior Rec and Prep (MS) teams that were amazing. I was nice watching 7-9 stunts groups all doing kick fulls that were beautiful....then you got to HS varsity where baskets are legal and I was holding on to my seat because their tosses were soooooo bad, I just knew someone was going to get hurt.

We are new to allstar rec and chose to attend mostly Jam Brands competitions- so we are followinf thier rules and guidelines. I guess it depends on what the coach/director chooses as there is no set rules.

Thanks for the response. Are you saying that these comeptition have follow no specified guidelines when it comes to stunting and what is and is not legal for a specific level?

NOOO- they have their own guidelines- like were going senior 4 - we follow level 4 guidelines- its basically the same as allstar rules- we cant do fulls only up to layouts- we double from 2 legs- no full up to single leg stunts. We compete all music at 2:30 -I believe varsity brands are only 2 mins. We had to stay away from Varsitybrands due to time changes. Hope this explains it better.

thanks. that is one thing I did notice that was missing yesterday. there were no fullups....while our MS team does no hands 1 1/2 ups. There was only one other HS team there that did a full up to half (elevator)...makes some sense.
Thanks

In rec it all varies by league and competition. There is no one set of rules that apply to everyone as there is in allstar or school cheer

Thanks, I guess I just never paid it any attention, but this is the first time I went to a competition; and this is one we do annually, where we were the only UCA style team there. it was fun, and I don't want to give anyone the wrong impression, while our girls performed poorly, for my standards (they dropped), the still won their division competing against 5 teams. So I am not upset or fell like we were cheated or anything like that. It just made me wonder about the safety aspect of these competitions.

It all depends on the EP in Illinois. The comp I was at this past weekend had two levels, 11 and under were red (no single legged extended stunts or baskets) and 12+ were given the choice of red or blue which pretty much allows everything that NFHS rules do.

The other comps we participate in are run by a separate Rec EP and follow NFHS rules and their own proprietary rule set. Unlike the first EP they mandate that everyone at the age level compete at the same level, which worries me because I know my girls can do basket tosses and my fellow coaches and I have been doing them for years but several of the other teams have mom coaches (not knockin you guys, my mom was one of you) that have never coached proper basket toss technique. I just worry about safety lately.

Spirit celebration in Texas puts rec. on allstar grid.
Beg:levels1-2
Int.: levels 3-4
Advanced: level 5

I know for Pop Warner they have levels 1-4, but they're different than AS 1-4...1 trick baskets are legal for level 3 and for level 4 anything up to a kick double is allowed.

Most of our competitions use USASF rules for rec teams too. For the most part our 6&U compete level 1, 8&U and up compete level 2 - which means basket tosses are allowed, sometimes one of 10/12/14U will compete level 3 depending on the girls they have. Our comps that aren't USASF rules are normally unleveled NFHS rules, and you'll see 10&U and up starting to pull out things like toe touch basket tosses for those.

Question.. So our rec team is doing a competition team (kind of like a 1/2 year team) and all but one of their competitions are based off USASF grid & they would enter as level 4 but they feel like it wouldn't really be populated and often wouldn't compete against anyone. Does anyone who have seen rec competitions in their area that follow the same guidelines see a good number of teams in a level 3-5 division? Do they actually have the skills to be qualified at that level or is it more like they have that one person who has a tuck and all kartwheels, ect.

I know of maybe two or three teams in the entire region that are true level 4 teams, but even then, the entire team doesn't tumble. They have more level 2 tumbling, then maybe 5 or 6 out of 24-30 have tucks or more.

Where are you guys located- im in northeast and i have a level 4 team. Please tell me we will have competition! I truly HATE going and not competing against anyone - its such a waste of money.

I don't think I've seen whole team tumbling anything other than forward rolls at a competition. Some teams get close with cartwheels/handsprings. From what I've seen, between 1 girl to half the team generally have max tumbling for the level. Around here, you can get decent competition at level 3, and a very few programs will put together a level 4. You'd have to pick your competitions right though to get competition.
