I coach a Senior Rec team in NJ, we compete UCA and are going to UCA Nationals next month. We compete locally and follow UCA rules, and attend Regionals to qualify for Nationals. The team name is Jr. Streaks. We are a true rec program. Our girls all cheer for their football programs and we compete from October through February. The girls are ages 10-14 and are very talented. We are in our 3rd season and have placed 2nd previous years at UCA Nationals. Good luck to all the teams this season.
Good Luck this year- I coach Commack Elite and we are not doing UCA this year. Im very sad to not be going in feb but the not having a cheer in my routine has been wonderful. again good luck ...

Hi, didn't a few of your teams do really good, including getting a title last year? Surprised you will not be there this year.

Yes we won in peewee and jr - the long story short is we were kicked out of our town competitions for being to good- so we decided to give it a try at 2:30 of all music- must say i miss the UCA type that there is no levels but not actually cheering has been nice. HOWEVER i miss disney every day and wish we were going back. Trying for us finals jackets this year. Good luck.

You will be misse. Come to think about it, I have not see you guys at all this year. This is a first. Were you at NewRo?

This is our girls first year competing since we are a fairly new high school, we have a fairly new youth program. We started out with the girls at a camp with the high school girls where they were divided into sideline teams. First choice of teams went to the girls who have a brother on the team so therefore they can go to the same games as their brother and the parents aren't struggling to get them on the other side of town at the same time. Then the rest are pretty much put where they want to go. The team numbers this year had anywhere from 10-18 girls. This year the team that my mom and I coach eneded up with 18 girls, which was a big step up from the last 3 years when we had 4 girls the first year, 6 the next, and 10 the next. Our program is still growing! Anyways, throughout the season the girls do sidelines at games and a short halftime routine with stunts and a little bit of tumbling and begin to be "evaluated" in a way. They were told at the beginning of the season to always do their best because we would have an "Excel" team formed at the end of the football season to compete at 2 competitions. I'm not sure which competitions they will be attending since I have only been to help with the competition girls twice due to schedule conflict:( The excel team is made of 22 girls aged 7-12 and they all have standing back handsprings. I can't give much detail about the competition team because I don't know. But that is how we are doing it for now because a lot of the youth football girls just want to cheer football and not compete

no- we had to create our schedule at the start of our season to account for travel and such so we not able to add additional competitions during the season. Were doing mainly Jam brand competitions and even with them are having difficulties finding teams to compete against.

In my area which is in Northern California marin, we have pop Warner teams. Chargers!
The divisions go by age most of the time!
Mascot
Mitey mite
Jr. Peewee
Peewee
Jr. Midget
Midget

I was on jr. Peewee and jumped all the way to midget in one year when I was younger, I thought I was so cool haha.
But the teams do cheer at the pop Warner football games but they also train all year and compete at 3-4 competitions. The seasons usually end in feb. It was so much fun when I did it! I learned a lot, but now I feel since allstar is big now pop Warner cheer is declining. When I was on the team we would practice at an all star gym. It was airborne allstars. They closed like 2 years ago tho :( but many of the girls were on both pop and allstar! The good ol days, back when life was easy :)

Cp is starting her 3rd year with a 43 year old football and cheer program in Central Western NJ. The year that we joined was our organization's inaugural year in a newly formed AYC league (almost everyone moved over from Pop Warner) which has proven to be extremely competitive. I think the league that we compete in earned 15 of 23? National AYC Titles this year...and to get there we have to compete against each other two times to qualify for Nationals so it can get pretty intense.

This will be my second year assistant coaching CP's team and this year we move to the Mighty Mite (Division 8) level. This "may" be our first year competing on the Nationals track at the Mighty Mite level- but that is still to be decided. AYF just opened Division8 to competition last year, but we chose to exhibit instead. Now this year, the talent and drive of the team is enticing some of us to "go for it" (not to mention seeing both the older teams earning bids to Nationals last year)--but ...adding another competition team into the mix, especially at this age, might not be the best thing. I am curious to see how it all plays out in the next few weeks as decisions are being made. (especially since the possibility of our season extending to mid Dec if we make it to Nationals, will effect my daughter cheering for her AS team. We would probably have to go with prep instead of moving to teh full year team).

By the looks of early registrations, it looks like we will have a Mini, Flag, Mighty Mite, Jpw, PeeWee, Junior Midget squads, plus our awesome Contender (Special Needs) program.-- so we will provide cheer for ages 3-15. We age the teams out after 8th grade graduation, so that we don't compete with the high schools.

We don't hold tryouts and accept everyone. Placement is usually done by birthdate.

Last year was a great year for the program. Our oldest team came in 3rd in the Nation (5th overall in the entire comp) and our other competitive team were named Champs. Our Contender team was also invited to perform at Nationals.

We practice at the field 4 or 5 nights a week during August and then the teams all scatter to different indoor practice sites for the fall where they practice 3 times a week. (This is the only thing that I don't like about the program- a lack of our own gym, makes it very hard on parents who have 2 or more girls on different teams practicing in two different places).

We are required to cheer every Sunday at a game and usually have to travel over an hour to get to most of our opponents, since we are the most northern team in the league.

We compete at 2-3 local comps for "fun".

And then we have two big AYC comps that we need to place high to earn bids to Nationals.

Imo, the commitment is more intense than All Stars - it can get pretty cray cray at times :)

edited to add- AYC just joined up with EPIC this year, so they are hosting some camps for teh league and the team this year--I am definitely enjoying the affiliation!

oops.. I forgot to add cost.

$250 fee
uniform shells provided
$100 extra accessories (Bow, bloomers, midriff, shoes, one practice uniform)
$150 choreo (team fundraising available)
$200 work bond or 3 hours time from parents
__

We offer optional tumbling classes and stunt clinics and the league is introducing an optiona the 3 day sleepaway camp run by EPIC and single day stunt camps too.

Mine is Young Champions. You only pay $7 a week, you buy the uniform, and competition. At competitions you go up against other Young Champion teams from different cities. They're held at college gyms.
There's usually 3-4 teams in each city, mini (we call it babies), middle (my team), and an older team. The olde team goes to nationals sometimes if they get accepted to go. There's also elite team who is most advanced. The divisions are stars (thigh stands), all-stars (preps), pro all-stars (cradles), elite (extensions).

My experience with rec cheer was amazing! We were not in highschool but we cheered for our town's football team, i think thats rec right? if not please correct me. We trained for competitions harder than my allstar team and we went to 3 competitions, baystate, regionals, and nationals, and we won nationals! They gave us jackets and medals for winning. The program my town cheered with was AYC and it was great! Everyone was nice and it made our friendships stronger!

My rec league is considering adding flag football in spring 2014. As cheer director, I will likely have to add cheerleading for it. Any ideas, comments or suggestions on how it differs from cheering for tackle (if at all) and coordinating a flag cheer program?

The assistant dir & aren't crazy about the idea of year-round cheer, simply due to wanting a life outside of cheer:). Fall season is busy enough!!

@cheermom4lyfe -- we are in the same position. Spring cheer will probably be starting for us in 2014. We tried not to go there b/c the full year coaching commitment is so intense- but knowing that all of the other teams were getting 4-5 extra months of "practice" before Nationals is driving us to it ;)
