I hate glue and glitter..it's terrible. We have this cream eyeshadow this year that works really well. With liquid eyeliner, it really pops. For lips we use a lipstain by CoverGirl I think it is.
I hated using eye glue and glitter, but I really like the NYX eye glitter because it doesn't go everywhere like the one I used for cheer. And you dont need the eye glue for it

Well, my dear, you will never have to worry about that with MAC - you have to scrub that stuff off! All of the suggestions so far are great - Urban Decay, MAC, NYX are all great brands. Urban Decay and MAC are pricey and NYX is very a lot cheaper, but still decent quality. I'm a MAC girl, but I mix and match! A good primer and a good brush will make a cheaper brand 'pop' and last a lot longer.

As far as where to buy - with MAC have to go to a standalone MAC store (not sure how many they have in other areas, but they have 2 in Manhattan, but none that I know of in Jersey) or a MAC setup in Macys, Nordstrom's etc. - those are all over the country. Also, if you have Sephora in your area, it's a great place to try some of the best brands. Also, make sure you have makeup wipes - with the more pigmented eye shadows you can't just smudge it away with your finger - you try that and it will smear all over the place.

One last tip, if you aren't sure how to apply the makeup, go to youtube and find 'how to' videos. There are lots out there, some great, some awful, you have to look. Good luck!!!

Thank so much!! You're a wealth of information. I know where a Sephora is. I figured that or a MAC store could be my one-stop-shop just so I don't get overwhelmed. I can just find someone to help me. I will definitely have to get a primer. Do you have one you recommend or does it really matter?

If anyone is having trouble with makeup not just staying on, but looking good throughout the competition then use Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer for sure. But when you're all done with your makeup spray Urban Decay "All Nighter". It's a very light spray that sets your makeup for days. :) I use it not only for cheer but for work where I have to dress up nice and it's great!
I love the all nighter spray. At the Ulta i work at, and im pretty sure all Ultas, we are selling the old packaging xl ones for 18 dollars. Its crazy since the new packaging regular ones are 29.

Yes! Urban Decay is the primer I love most. They have several brands. One has a slight shimmer and the other is just plain. You only need a little, it's a great product.

Also, it is a great idea to get someone to help you. That's why I like going to Sephora or MAC. You can try it out with a professional. I'd rather pay a few dollars more to get the right look. I brought my CP into MAC with her uniform top and had them do a dramatic eye shadow to match the colors and so that I could watch how they applied the colors. She got compliments the entire season. I always look for the artist who has the best look and then ask them for help. This might also depend on the age of your CP. The artist was a bit reluctant at first because she was 12 and she was a little uncomfortable about doing making up on a kid. I told her that it was for competition, like a recital. So she understood and then did a great job. (She also told my CP she should be so grateful to have a mother who is so supportive (as if!!) because she did a sport - can't remember which - and her mother never came to any of her events. She said she wanted to do dance and cheer and her mom wouldn't let her. Here those stores all the time from kids and it makes me soooo sad! :( )

I never considered taking her in with her Uniform on. My daughter has a comp tomorrow so that would be the perfect time to take her. My daughter is 8 so if the artist was reluctant at first, I'm sure they'll look at me like I'm crazy lol.
I'm actually one of those stories. I used to watch that comp on ESPN that they do a Disney and I always wanted to do it but my parents didn't have the time or money. I'm just glad my daughter enjoys it. Jersey Cheer Mom, you gave me some really good info. I'm gonna have to keep you around. Thanks again!!

Ive never thought about going somewhere to get your competition makeup done. Thats really good idea considering some parents aren't comfortable doing their children makeup because maybe they just aren't that good at doing makeup and can learn so much from the makeup artists at mac, sephora or ulta. I know, since I started working at ulta i learned so much from the girls there and wish I had that knowledge back when I was cheering :p

Yes, it's really great getting tips from them. Especially with things like blending, using primer, concealer (not for kids but for me). One thing I just remembered is there is water spray I buy from MAC - it's in the Studio Fix line. You spray it on the brush and it helps the color to pop out. I would never thought about that. I saw it at the store, but didn't really know what it was for - I think I thought it was a cleaner - but it really makes the look more vibrant.

Whenever I want to try and new color or a group of colors, I have the artist do it. I used to just try and put the color on my wrist. NOT! It will look completely different on your eyes or lips! I also learned that you can put eyeshadow on your lips, but that's another tip for another day and probably not for cheer. Also, I usually give them a tip because they are professionals and they are always so nice.
