This is all great. Thanks for the info so far! The more, the better.

Because all things suck in Illinois you can't legally do both allstar and high school cheer during the IHSA competitive season (which is the winter season primarily). So many of us tryout for half season allstar teams literally the weekend after state. Speaking for my school, the relationship between us and allstar in general is really good. Many girls started at allstar gyms or do the half season as I mentioned. Also my team does tumbling classes every week at a gym. Even though high school season is over, we've had tryouts this week and I had to be a little late to tryouts one day, and leave practice early another. Both my allstar and high school coaches are really good about me splitting up my time evenly between them. There are no hard feelings. My high school coach actually really encouraged doing off season because its helpful for gaining/maintaining skills, even though it interferes a little. I think in IL in general the relationship is good although i'm sure there are exceptions.

There were no problems between high school/all star cheer at my school. We had some girls that did both, but it had been more in the past. We had the option to take a tumbling class just for our school at a nearby all star gym, which I always did. My senior year, and this past year we had our routine choreographed by a coach from that gym too. One time we had an overlap with competitions where we were supposed to travel for a comp the same day as the all star team some girls were on held a local competition. So it worked out that we got to attend the all star gym's comp free of charge (or maybe it was money off registration, not 100% sure) so that their athletes could be their and perform both with their all star and high school teams.

There are definitely exceptions - granted I've been out of high school for a little while now, but the high school cheer coaches at my school were kind of awful to the girls who came from allstar or chose to only participate in football season so that they could continue allstar. The head coach essentially called a bunch of people out at a tryout clinic, saying that allstar is fine through eighth grade, but it's your duty to represent your high school once you get into high school and it's time to move on.

That was back in 2007 or 2008, though. The relationship may have changed now that many IL gyms offer half or quarter season teams for HS athletes.

In my county, very few girls do AS, and none of them do it at an elite level, or for a big gym. Coaches let girls do AS because we only have fall comp. and bball season, which is optional. A lot of the girls do basketball, and make it when they can.

I want to get back in AS this year, and my coach has already come up with ways to make it work for our practices in the fall. My team has no AS cheerleaders, but the other two schools in our county have at least a few that have started in the last year or two. They all cheer for the same gym, that's fairly new and where most girls go to tumble. Their coaches have a connection to the gym, an it's the only gym in reasonable distance too. Interested to see if rules/regulations change as more girls in our area get involved in AS.

I was an all star cheerleader for 2 and a half out of my 4 years of high school. Girls on my high school team would often refer to all star cheer as "trashy" because they couldn't see pass the over dramatic uniforms, hair, and make up. I found this to be really sad and closed minded of them but I guess all star cheer is pretty out of the norm.

In our district there are no restrictions on doing both. At my middle school out of a squad of 20 only 5 are not involved in all star cheer. Tryouts are over and on our new freshman team everybody except for 3 do all star cheer ( out of a squad of 24). Many of the JV and Varsity girls do both! Because of this our teams are a tad more advanced than most HS and Middle School teams. Our MS team had 4 people with fulls and we stunt at a level 4 almost 5 level. The HS is probably the same with about 9 Fulls on freshman,JV and varsity combined. I will say that I live close to a famous all star gym so that probably has something to do with it. We even have some already and soon to be "Cheerleberties" on our HS and Ms teams...I won't say anymore, don't want to give away where I live (even though I kinda already did)

Here in Phillipsburg, NJ and most of the geographical region known as the Lehigh Valley (PA) the the high school teams do not allow cheerleaders to do both. A lot of the HS cheerleaders do attend the various gyms in the region to work on their tumbling skills though.

Both my daughter and me would love if she was able to do both. I have a year to hope for a change of course.

Question: I know for my high school they always told us if you are on an all star team, remember that HS cheer comes first. Does an all star team say to girls also on a HS team remember, all star cheer comes before your HS team? And if both teams see themselves as coming before the other, how does that work out and how do you avoid conflict? Something I've always wondered.

It's against our state's High School Athletic Association rules to do competitive school cheer and allstar if the seasons overlap. Some girls will do sideline and AS, but most just choose AS or school. I believe the state is pretty strict with the rule and you can't even train with a competitive club team if you are on a school team. I know that's the case with soccer. The competitive teams can't practice or play until after the team banquet.

In Arizona you are not allowed to do both, even if your high school team does not compete. There are a few schools that have really good teams that go to nationals. This is a relatively new rule. There are girls that go back and forth.

Ok I coach in Arizona, and I heard that there is a chance this could be discussed for next year and revised. So we will have to see.

That would be great if they changed the rule. I think it was a bit mean spirited when made the rule. I think it would be great for both school and Allstar if they changed it.

Our AS gym last year said school cheer was an excused absence in the handbook, but they made it known they weren't happy when you had a game. The school doesn't prohibit you from doing AS, but you get demerits for every game you miss, and it only takes 2-3 games missed to be dismissed from the squad.

In our area the relationship between school and allstars is really good. Every once in a while there may be an allstar kid who thinks their above school cheer, but for the most part they both respect each other and get along. We also live in an area where there is a lot of really good school teams who have advanced skills, so that may play a part in it. My team specifically is allowed to do both, but in the past 6 years only 2 girls ever did. I think its a mix between the fact that the closest gym is a 40 minute drive (not including city rush hour traffic) and due to the fact that we run our school team a lot like an allstar team, so there isn't that feeling that they're missing something. It is our rule that school cheer comes first if there is a conflict and we have a strict absence policy. Almost every school team I know of around has this same rule and the allstar gyms know it and are flexible with schools.
