I watched the Oregon vs Baylor event and I agree it does move slow. To be honest I was really confused why a halftime was necessary. But for those that stick thru to the end, the combined performance more closely resembles all star.

Admittedly I don't know much about it and watched it out of curiosity, so I don't know enough to really make suggestions on how it could be improved. But I'm sure they face the same hurdles as competitive college teams with regards to spring floor. I think the use of a spring floor would make the tumbling visually more exciting. It also looks really weird to see them starting running passes *off* the mat.

I have a question actually. Because Cheerleading is not considered a NCAA sport does that mean girls could both cheer on the spirit squad and participate in an A&T team?

I THINK if you're on an NCAA sport you can't participate in other club or outside sports. So I don't think they could do both. I have a friend on on my school's NCAA rowing team and she's not really allowed to participate in other sports or clubs, but I think that might be just because it would conflict too much with practices. I'm not really sure to be honst, but I don't think so.

I agree with yojaehs..A&T is the best chance at a legitimate NCAA sport. Give it a chance to evolve.

HPU posted this last week, which might provide mariahnicole1216 some information about how they are planning on separating the teams. It's not clearly stated, but implied they are two teams and won't do both (selected to either team). Due to the amount of travel required for the A&T teams to compete, I don't see how you could do sideline too. But that is just an opinion, not a fact. I'm sure the schools have policies.

Thank you for your support in Hawaii Pacific University!

We would like to let you know the new route that HPU will be heading in for next Fall 2013. HPU has decided to go the Acro and Tumbling (A&T) route, which means there will be an Acro and tumbling team as well as a game day/side line team. The A&T will be the competitive team and will consist of about 30 females. The sidel
ine team will be non competitive but will cheer all games. Both teams will be offered scholarships. The university is excited to head this route for the season 2013-2014.

Tryouts for A&T will be held April 20-21 3-6pm @Moanalua High School. We do accept videos as well. We offer partial tuition waivers to new incoming students who are selected to either team.

I, the head coach, will be looking at all running tumbling (hard floor), standing tumbling (hard floor), stunts with dbl downs, and all jumps to back or jumps to specialty. Technique will be extremely important for all of these skillsets.

If you need any further assistance, please do not hesitate to ask!

The announcers are horrible. Flat and ZERO knowledge of terminology. They called the flyers "the girls being lifted"....come on, give them a study sheet. Better yet, I'm sure you could find someone with cheer background in the communications major at the school who would do a fabulous job. Those two have to go.

Thank you for your insight...I always enjoy reading your posts and hold you in high regard! I agree that a fact sheet is in order. The university is beyond invested in getting all aspects of the meet/game day experience right and I will pass on your very helpful comments. Both of these young men are students and actually really love the skill sets and the sport itself and I know that they want to get this right!

It's slow, slightly boring, and just SO different from the cheerleading we know. Personally it took away some of the things that drew me to the sport in the first place. I love the idea on paper! I'm just torn on how I feel about it in practice.
I agree. With how slow it is and just having no music up until the 6th round, I feel like it's lacking energy. Part of what I love about cheerleading is performing, that's why I have always liked TGLC and WCSS, they make it entertaining to watch them. A&T does not have that. I know A&T isn't supposed to be cheerleading, but I dunno, it just feels so boring.

If its just entertaining then its not a sport. It's just a great performance. . The prelims of gymnastics are boring too. Short program of figure skating is less enjoyable than the free skate. In figure skating they used to so compulsories which were horrible. It's how the sport needs to evolve so it can actually be a sport. Hang in there with it! It will be worth it!

I think some background music to be filler in the deader parts would help.

Cheerleading exists to not only lead the crowd but provide entertainment during the dead parts of games of games. Not that there need to be cheerleaders for the cheerleaders (mind blowing, hah) but just some production aspects to have everything feel fuller. Remember in a 4 hour football game there is only about 11 minutes of action.

There actually is background music during the dead time (possibly can't be heard on the livecast because of the announcers). Also mascot throwing t-shirts and game day crew interacting with fans.

I could see how the music and atmosphere would be hard to hear. I think for A&T the core idea has a lot of legs, it just needs more polish and better marketing.

They should live stream all the matches for free and then tell the cheer world to get an idea of what they are like.

I HIGHLY recommend people to talk to athletes that are participating. Like I have said before I have 2 former athletes participating at 2 different schools and they LOVE IT! They were both very hardcore all-star kids and very smart kids. I've heard of some "named" athletes looking to go the A&T route next season. I think it has legs and is crawling but getting up to a jog. I think when some of these high profile "names" start getting released. Mary Lou Rettons daughter is just one ;)

My daughter is on the team at Azusa Pacific. My oldest daughter was on the team the year it transitioned from competitive cheer to acro and tumbling, it was actually called stunts and tumbling its first year. My oldest daughter didn't like it, it was just too different for her. My second daughter absolutely loves it. My girls all cheered/cheer at FCA in Pittsburgh with glitter sparkles, and gems. A & T could not be more opposite with volleyball style uniforms, no hairbows , weightlifting gloves, and mouth guards. THIS IS A SPORT guys! These girls start working out during the summer, then practice 3 days a week for 3 hours and on non practice days they do cardio and weighlifting with their trainers. They train for 7 months for a 2 month competitive season.

I agree that the video is a bit boring. I've been to one live meet at Azusa and its much more fun in person. The Azusa announcer is very knowledgeable and explains what is going on. You can watch any of the meets on the different schools' websites. Just go to the athletics portion. Azusa charges to watch the live feed but Baylor and Oregon's were free.

A & T is under the USA gymnastics umbrella. The girls tumble on a dead mat and I highly doubt that will change. The athletes recruited are all star and high school cheerleaders and competitive gymnasts. The all stars and gymnasts had to learn to tumble on a dead mat but they all seem to have succeeded in that. They have to start running off the mat because if you see where they land at the end of their pass they would be off the mat if they didn't. Not sure why this would bother anyone. This is definitely an evolving sport and I'm sure between now and when my daughter graduates it will change some more. Every sport does, look at all star cheer and how much it's changed in the last 10 years.

There are 3 new schools coming on board next year...one in WV, Kings College in Bristol, TN, and HPU. Kiara Nowlin and Mary Lou Retton's daughter both signed with Baylor, and Kelsey Rules just signed with Quinnipiac. I think you will see more girls signing in the future as all stars become more comfortable with the style and format. I'm telling you now, if you want to be a well respected athlete, this is where you want to be. Azusa can't keep A & T shirts in stock, and when I went to the athletics portion of freshman orientation the Athletic director was wearing an A & T shirt.

I guess my main point of this is to ask the all star community to support this sport and give it a chance! Now if I can just get A & T and USASF to talk and not have their national championships and Worlds on the same weekend...sigh.

What's the difference between this and Stunt? Because I love the idea, but I agree that it should be faster moving which I think would make it more exciting.

There are many differences and I'm not sure of them all but I can list a few.

NCATA athletes ONLY compete and are listed under athletics.
NCATA scoring is much more detailed with start values, code of points etc.

The format of both is similar but the route of the NCATA is way better for NCAA emerging sport recognition/status.

There are many more differences that someone with more information than I should give details on.
