some one with more knowledge of gyms, teams, and size guesses feel free to play with these parameters

175 total combined kids from all locations
only 1 worlds teams

I think that will put the vast majority of the gyms that consistently place top 5 in D1
then you have to decide if you would allow D2 teams the option of going D1

not that it really matters with this discussion, but it would potentially help grow Jr 5 and Sr 5 restricted instead of having the 2nd worlds team that would push them to D1

with using total number of kids among all locations, the number of actual addresses you have shouldn't really matter (if I opened up a gym across the street to be able to have a second full sized floor does that automatically make me d1?)

I think this is good. Mist of the multiple small location gyms I know of would still qualify under this, including ours.

I just assumed they were just going to do these four divisions with D1 & D2 and large senior & large coed would stay the same because they aren't as big of divisions.

On the official usasf proposal, it says there will only be these four divisions offered at worlds 2014 if the proposal is passed. This is what it says:

"Four divisions will be offered in the first year; small and medium senior, and small and medium senior coed."

I read it as four divisions will be offered in the first year, like only four divisions will be offered in this format the fist year, and then the others (large senior/coed & international) would stay the same. Just my interpretation.

@buegesmalls - not sure. i took this list: Green Bay Elite - All Stars! and multiplied the number of teams by 20 for a quick estimate (though i don't think they have a J5 this year, so it's most likely outdated.)

@RockstarScott - thanks for the number! I said 270 so i was pretty close. if you were given the choice of D1 or D2 do you know which you would choose? (you don't have to answer or be put on the spot:p) i'm just trying to find some sort of "magical number" where the line should be drawn. of course, there will never be an actual magical number that everyone agreed on.

Yep, pretty sure that's last year list because I remember being sad about Orange not being J5 this year! Lol

in the first year of this those would be the only divisions that it applied to.
So large would remain the same. Because if you're capable of fielding a large team... you're probably big enough for D1, and should be able to compete with the mega gyms. Plus there are less teams in those divisions because it's so hard to get that many athletes.
It doesnt make sense to say "small and medium will be the only divisions at Worlds." Because you can't have medium without large, or else it would just become large... If there were only two sizes it would have to be small and large. There wouldn't be a medium.

Yes, this is what I was looking for. If a small gym is 175 kids or less, small gyms with 175 kids over 2 or 3 locations should also be able to compete in the D2 division.

this is a horrible idea....
I cannot believe that we continue to do this....splitting and creating new divisions so that everyone can feel good about themselves!
Every year All-Star Cheerleading crowns 1000's of "national champions" in every level, age, gym size, etc .....
There needs to be a place where there is just ONE champion ....

I agree with you for one of the first times ever :)

The D1 winner would probably be considered the top level, best of the best winner. I don't think Bellarmine University thought their basketball national championship was better than Louisville's national championship. I dot think their D2 championship took away from the NCAA winner that is considered the top tier, best of the best team. But let's be real-they are working within different limits. If you are a gym that is constantly losing your kids to a powerhouse mega gym, how are you ever going to build a foundation to get there? Maybe being a competitive D2 would allow you to grow into a competitive D1 team (and I focus on the world competitive-not just there to be there). Plus, if you are small and have the choice, go for it. Nobody would be telling GBE they are stuck in D2 because they are small...

its just a phase...it will pass;)

The tricky part is stuff like this is in the hands of the B.O.D. so unfortunately it matters very little what we think or argue. Just like the "image" rules, uniform requirements, tumbling restrictions, and really anything...they want it so it will happen:rolleyes:
And just like those other examples, "suggesting" the concept gets us all used to the idea so its not so traumatic when they implement it.

Can I ask why you (or anyone who agrees) feel this way? I know I only have my own experiences to draw from, so I'd like to understand why you feel this way. Truly just asking to understand, as I want the best for the sport and if there is something I'm not understanding I'd like to know.

As I see it, D2 doesn't hurt D1 at all (though I guess if it helps smaller gyms retain their athletes, it could very minimally hurt the larger programs where these athletes may wind up.). Otherwise it seems having a D2 would just make the talent pool in D1 that much more concentrated and elite.
